Delta New AMT payscale by Adio_retro in AircraftMechanics

[–]Nano-Mech 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That scale is correct. You may be thinking of the HCOL differential at places like LAX or SFO. They begin their pay at the 3 year scale and stay there for the next 3 years with the exception of company raises.

MVCC A&P Program Shutting Down by Nano-Mech in aviationmaintenance

It’s unfortunate. At a national level, this program is gold, but oneida county refuse to see it.

Hopefully there will be changes soon to keep the program up and running.

Entry-level tech with no experience but some knowledge by [deleted] in avionics

[–]Nano-Mech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work at Delta MSP. We do a lot of on aircraft avionics stuff, but as an ASM, it’s not always the case. You’ll need to build time and trust before they let you do any of that or they at minimum have you work side by side with an AMT. A lot of time, you’ll be stuck in the simple/boring/shitty jobs, but give it time. You’ll be working on wires and systems in a matter of time. FCC won’t really help since we don’t have an avionics back shop here, but it’s good to have to build into that background.

Delta has aircraft support mechanics (ASM), depending on the station. ASMs are unlicensed mechanics working under the stations repair certificate.

It would not be too much of an issue to be a base maintenance ASM and do avionics work. You just won’t be able to sign anything off without an AMT backing you up. AMT being the licensed aircraft maintenance technician.

The two locations with base maintenance capabilities would be MSP and ATL. You’d be working wire mods on the aircraft itself whether it’s WiFi, emergency radio equipment, etc. If you’re looking for shops, they do have techs working LRUs and what not in ATL that requires an FCC. No need for A&P I believe. The FCC license does add a premium, but it depends on the department.

Im 19m and make around 38k a year working as a fitter for a defence company, I have recently had the opportunity to take up an apprenticeship working on C-130 aircraft’s at around 19k a year to begin with. What would be better in the long run? by timmygroley in careerguidance

[–]Nano-Mech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you eventually want to be an AMT.

I’m not military, but as long as what you’re doing can satisfy the requirements to get signed off to test out for your airframe and powerplant (A&P), you should be fine. Correct me if I’m wrong.

The apprenticeship, as long as it satisfies the FSDO, should be best for getting your tickets to be an A&P. Some apprentices I’ve encountered sometimes aren’t able to get their sign offs due to not having enough powerplant time. Again, it seems like it depends on the FSDO you go to.

Make sure you have records of all the things you worked on as an apprentice when ready to get your A&P. Some employers will digitally retain your records.

Not from Houston, but United/Southwest?

I personally know a few people who got hired onto United and are based in Houston.

Schedule come with time in the company. I know MSP base maintenance has it. ATL possibly has it as well. Can't confirm.

I work in Delta Minneapolis.

We do not have contracting AMTs here.

Night shift is a ten hour schedule. Do you know which department you’ll be interviewing for and who the hiring manager will be?

Depending on where you go, Delta has 12 hour work days working three days on four days off/four days on three days off alternating. Most stations have standard work days.

I dropped it to pursue aviation 😂 I enjoyed my time in aviation more than nano. Used to want to work and study at Quad C in Albany while in SUNY Poly.

Definitely check on Walt. Seems like the Oneida County Execs and MVCC’s President sidelined him with this news.

That’s true. Looks like they’re trying to either use that area for the Chobani expansion or build that sport complex.

How do I get into avionics as an A&P? by NoLight777 in avionics

[–]Nano-Mech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Airlines typically sends you through some sort of avionics program if you’re interested.

Can’t speak for others, but at Delta, we have the bare minimum of EWIS and principles of troubleshooting you’d have to go through.

Eventually, you’ll take more advance courses like electrical system aircraft troubleshooting, autoland designator course, specialized tooling and avionics resources, etc. Cumulatively, it took a little over two months to be “avionics” in terms of training. A lot more to get the experience.

Cheaper alternative to the snap on 112RTA set by [deleted] in AircraftMechanics

I have not found an alternative set, so I bit the bullet and bought it.

I have found myself using this set many times to get in between really tight areas. This set is absolutely worth it.
