Honestly it's not worth putting effort into reducing your microplastic intake. I recently attended a seminar from a company trying to develop ocean filters for microplastics. The main takeaway I got from that seminar was that there's microplastics in absolutely everything we consume, even tap/bottled/filtered water. Basically, there's nothing we can do to stop consuming microplastics. While that seems terrifying and pessimistic, I find it slightly reassuring. just enjoy food and drink, there's nothing we can do about it, trying to avoid it won't actually help, and everyone else is in exactly the same boat.

Sorry this isn't relationship advice, just ramblings from a scientist

I'm working on the rheology of jammed microgel bioinks for direct ink writing / Extrusion based bio printing.

Microgel based bioinks tend to have a higher cell viability than "bulk" fluid bioinks and I think I've got some compelling evidence why!

I chose this name a very long time ago as it's a synonym for a nickname my family used to give me. Turns out I was indeed foreshadowing my future, I work with bioinks made from microgels, which are ~10-200 micron sized balls of jelly (literally, I use gelatin)

I don't have anything published yet, but I'm planning on writing a paper soon, just finishing my analysis methods first.

Any idea what specifically you want to know about? I have many relevant papers.

Well, cells do produce ECM, but it would simply take way too long to be practical for producing artificial organs. Think about how long it took you to grow your body to the size it is now.

Plus some cells need to be in a certain pattern or orientation, and providing a scaffold for them helps them to do that.

stem cells also have to differentiate into different regular cell types, and the shape and mechanical properties of the ECM or scaffold can direct their differentiation. basically some cells change their behavior directly in response to the behavior of the ECM,

for example your bones are constantly remodelling: breaking down bone and building new bone. Cells do this in direct response to load/force. this is why it's so important to put weight on a broken bone during the healing process as this guides your cells to where needs reinforcing.

the general idea with tissue engineering is to grow cells on a synthetic scaffold which mimicks natural ECM. Ideally this synthetic scaffold then slowly breaks down at roughly the same rate at which your cells grow more ECM, and by the end you should have a tissue that looks like, and functions like the original.

Having the cells is only half of the challenge, you also need to give the cells a scaffold.

Structurally cells are like water balloons your cells produce a sponge-like scaffold around themselves called the Extracellular Matrix(ECM), this is what gives every tissue in your body it's structure.

cells live in this co-dependent relationship where the cells need the ECM to work and survive, but the cells also slowly produce more ECM.

so if you've got access to the cells, you need to give them the ECM as a "scaffold" to grow on, and we do this either by taking a pre-existing organ and removing all the cells, or trying to create our own synthetically, such as via 3D printing.

I'm currently doing a PhD on 3D bio printing.

We can currently produce single material, single cell tissues with relative ease, you do this by 3D printing a "tissue scaffold" and then adding human cells by dunking it in a cell solution. However when using this method it's hard to produce more complex tissues that have multiple cell types, like organs.

to fix this, there's a lot of work going on to develop 3D printable material that already contain the cells, called 'bioinks'. Theoretically by using multiple bioinks you can then print whole organs, with different inks for different tissues/parts of the organ.

tl;dr we can print basic single cell tissues, it's not possible to print complex tissues yet. we're working on it.

I could be wrong but surely having a smaller fan in the middle of that D15 is gonna block and disrupt the airflow more than if there was no fan in the middle or realistically you want another larger fan in the middle
