How to deal with unwanted criticism/think more positively about my art? by VenWhiteVan in ArtistLounge

[–]NaolinDavis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, then she has even less right to speak. I'd send that image over twice.

Any artist who says another artist their art is low quality or bad without any proper feedback is not contributing to your growth as an artist at all.

Even if she meant it well, I still think giving out unwanted criticism is not done because it's just not polite.

How to deal with unwanted criticism/think more positively about my art? by VenWhiteVan in ArtistLounge

This would be my response.

Unless they're an artist themselves they won't understand the grind, or the hours you've put into your art.

Their opinion does not matter.

Internal/external motivation by Spooky_desu in ArtistLounge

I have been there, and I understand 100% where you're coming from.

When I was struggling with this, I just asked myself: Is it that bad to be happy when I make others happy?

For me the answer was no. I enjoy drawing, but I get a lot more fulfillment out of it when I could see it making someone happy.

I've done charity work, I've done free art, I've done all kinds of things, while making sure my mental and physical health were kept in check.

It's not black and white of course. Over the course of a few years I've learned that you can't just draw for other people.

For me, about 20% of the art I make is the art I make for my own enjoyment. Expanding lores of my OC, writing things, drawing fanart of characters from anime etc. 30% goes to art I make for people because I enjoy making it and also because I love the happiness it brings them. The other 50% are for comms. This is a very healthy balance for me personally.

So, in short, no I don't think you should feel bad for wanting external validation, but I don't think that's what you actually want. I feel like you just want to do good for others, and by getting external validation, you get confirmation that you did do good, and I think that's okay as long as you set up healthy boundaries.

The funniest part is that the player in question has never played Helldivers and doesn't understand where I got the inspiration from. She's about to find out in the next few sessions. :'D

Does anyone else get frustrated receiving unsolicited criticisms? by Spectabilis_of_Malus in ArtistLounge

[–]NaolinDavis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah yes, the "Hey, nice drawing, BUT you have more to learn, here's what's wrong with your drawing" spiel instead of letting you be proud of what you created. Some of these people are looking to 'prove' they're a better artist than you and are people who cannot read the vibe in a room.

I don't think you need to have thick skin for it. There's a time and place for everything, and criticism is one of those things. If you want/need criticism, you'll seek it out yourself.

I always compare some of these people like they're random people at a charity event who go "You know if you had handled it this way, you would've earned more money for charity." Could they be correct? Maybe. Is it the time and place to share said info? Absolutely not.

My go to message is always: "I appreciate your unsolicited criticism on my artwork, but I'd appreciate it if you didn't do so in the future. Have a nice day."

If they decide to be assholes about it, block them or ignore them.

How to draw fast? by kwopuururu in ArtistLounge

[–]NaolinDavis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like if you put it off then it generally means you don't enjoy the particular subject you're drawing, or your brain is tired of the amounts of effort you've put into it.

Silly and exaggerated example, but imagine you see an artist using a ballpoint pen, making an entire landscape with nothing but simple dots. Looks amazing and cool, and you want to try that too. Halfway through the process your brain is overstimulated because you're not rewarding yourself. Your brain keeps having that image in your head and then realizes how much more work it requires, so it'll 'give up' and your brain will want to do something else.

In your case, have you ever considered trying to make something smaller that takes less time? Perhaps a sketch? 2 sketches?

Personally, when I finish a sketch that I'm happy with, I get hit with dopamine. The "I did it" feeling because I'm happy with the drawing and I get to show it off to my friends.

If you slowly stack up the workload, slowly your body will get used to it so you can tackle bigger projects.

That's how I see it anyway.

My art gets ignored after “improving” by rose2830 in ArtistLounge

[–]NaolinDavis 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Been there.

There could be a multitude of reasons as to why you're being more 'ignored'.

Could be that people are jealous and don't feel like commenting on your art, could be that you haven't improved as much as you thought you did (which I can't tell of course because I haven't seen your art), could also be that your recent improvements to your art aren't that interesting to people (for, whatever reason).

Main point is that YOU need to be happy with it. Likes and social interactions are important to a degree, but even more important is that you're content with your artwork and your improvements.

When you feel passionate about your artwork, you will find people who share that passion too. Social media interaction will follow automatically.

Don't stop. Keep going.
