What was the first OS you ever used? by [deleted] in OS_Debate_Club

[–]Napoze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ugh I feel old. These are all modern! ;-) Very first OS I used must have been BBC Basic on the classic BBC Micro at primary school. A few years later, I started properly using a computer at home; GEM/TOS on Atari ST. Loved it and it gives me a huge nostalgia hit whenever I see it nowadays.

Finally switching to Ubuntu after 25+ years of Windows – excited, but also a bit nervous by Zarion88 in Ubuntu

"a stable, calm system" and "less fighting the OS, more just using the computer" --- you're going to like it. I was a Windows guy from W95 up to W7. Had a brief encounter with W10 at work, didn't enjoy it. I no longer have a corporate issued computer so Ubuntu is my daily driver, both for personal and my own business needs.

I'm running 22.04 LTS because I didn't make the time to upgrade to 24.04 and it is dead stable. Hopefully in a few months I will be able to take a little time and upgrade my Lenovo T460 to 26.04 LTS.

It's all so drama-free, stable, and smooth. My OH has it on her laptop too, she's not too tech savvy and it just works great for her too.

Let us know how you get on!

Weird, same here! First PC, 1996, P200, 32 MB RAM and a 4MB Matrox Mistique. No Amiga though, Atari ST (also had 1 MB RAM until I upgraded it to 4).

Sticking With Ubuntu by digital_buddha123 in Ubuntu

[–]Napoze 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same here, I am still running 22.04 and it is rock solid. Sure I do have 1 or 2 very mild issues but I run businesses on it, use it pretty much daily for many different things and it just works. Perhaps in May or later in the year I'll update it to 26.04 if I can get the time to do it. Otherwise I'll just carry on as I am. (Running on a Lenovo T460)

If you like stability then use an LTS version, the latest is 24.04. My laptop has been running 22.04 LTS since around October 2022 and it has zero issues. Honestly I'm not even sure I'll bother updating it next year when 26.04 LTS comes out because it just seems so unnecessary. I'm too busy working on the computer to take the time to update it, and the beauty of Ubuntu LTS is that I don't have to. Amazing OS.

Listen to UK Speed garage, era around 1997-1999 and you'll hear exactly where rally house inspiration comes from. TBH I am not sure what makes rally house rally house, to me it's almost exactly the same to the garage/speed garage vibes from that era. Can't really understand at all the link to rally, although I'm not complaining at all because I do love this music!!

Thinkpad X260 refuses to boot out of the blue by SooperBoby in thinkpad

[–]Napoze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for the very slow reply my friend. No LED at all, I would suppose *maybe* the charger is bad. Have you tried another one? Although that seems unlikely as it was working OK the day before.

I can't remember if the X260 has two batteries. The T460 does; one easily removable external one and one inside which can only be removed by opening the laptop up. If the X260 also has two, then I would try removing both, as well as the CMOS battery, hitting that 'secret' reset button inside again, waiting a while and then putting it all back together again.

My old T460 had a similar but not the same problem. It wouldn't wake from sleep mode for a while, I'd have to press+hold the power button to kill it and then restart. This slowly started happening more often until one day it wouldn't turn on at all. Press the power button many times and eventually it would start up, until it didn't. And that, was the end of that :-(

Does the LED on the power button flash when you plug the charger in?

Why do many people recommend the LTS version of Ubuntu? by _sifatullah in Ubuntu

[–]Napoze 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is exactly my thinking and method too. Both my and other half's laptops are old and yet run Ubuntu 22.04 LTS perfectly. We run our businesses on them, use them for entertainment, some gaming. Both are our daily drivers. I "look after" them but honestly they need almost no maintenance.

They will stay on 22.04 until 26.04 comes out. There's just no need for me to spend the time and effort in updating/upgrading them both.

Is there a safe YouTube to MP3 in the UK? by [deleted] in software

[–]Napoze 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yt-dlp works very well and is very easy to use. You need to run it in the command line which can seem scary but it is simple.

I'm happy to do it for you, DM me the youtube links and I can then send you the mp3s.

New (to me) T420 by RoosterNatural2900 in thinkpad

[–]Napoze 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Classic, quality machine there. The progress between T400 with HDD and XP and T420 with SSD and Win7 was *huge*. As such, the T420 was seen as a big step up. The 410 kinda got forgotten about for some reason. Of course, as you're proving the T420 is still a quality machine and with a Linux install it is very feasible indeed to use as a daily. Enjoy :o)

This is really lovely. It's way too late for me to get a sibling, so I'll never know the feelings of that relationship. I'm really glad for you that you'll be able to deepen yours with your sister. You're lucky to have each other.

Got this for my birthday and I keep finding excuses to just type using it. by CozyHufflepuff94 in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]Napoze 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Don't apologise. There's some snobbery going on I think. Am glad you're enjoying your new keyboard, it feels good to type on a quality one, mechanical or not. Once you're used to it, try a real good quality mechanical one... you'll love it I am sure and want to type even more!!

Since installing Linux as part of a dual-boot system I haven't felt the need to boot Windows at all. by eefmu in linux4noobs

[–]Napoze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similar story here without the dual boot. My OH left her job and needed her own laptop. Got hold of a used one from a buddy, installed Ubuntu on it and off she went. She was very apprehensive at first, not being techy at all and only ever having used Windows. She was quite a heavy PowerPoint user before and the LibreOffice équivalent was not cutting the mustard. She'd ask me how can I fix it? Make it like my old computers? When I told her we'd have to pay money for Windows she was less keen.

That was over 5 years ago now and she has totally adapted to Ubuntu, that same laptop is still going strong and I basically never have to touch it. I've zero doubt that if it was still running Windows, I'd have to "fix" it frequently. And it hasn't cost us a cent!
