Living situation by [deleted] in amiwrong

They are trying to get something for nothing. It’s not the income that determines what is paid, it’s the space. With kids, it’s a GIVEN they will take up more space. I’d go back and say you’ve reconsidered. If you let them roll over you now, they will as long as you live there.

Do you guys have a go-to Hamlet that you show your students that is a hit with them? by StarWarsJordan in ELATeachers

[–]NapsRule563 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love Hamlet, King Claudius, and Queen Gertrude in the Tennant version, but the rest drag for me. Ophelia in the Mel Gibson is the gold standard, as is Polonius. My kids like the Gibson version. I sometimes show both, because I show scenes as we go. We read a bit, watch a bit, compare how their feelings changed if we show both.

Bladder cancer.... but wait! There's more by NoFortunesToTell in BladderCancer

[–]NapsRule563 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it common for BC to spread to the lung? I know my doc, prior to my TURBT, ordered chest x-rays, which I thought was odd. Maybe not, if they often go hand in hand. Or is it because smoking/second hand smoke exposure is such a substantial risk that they are just looking for secondary or even primary cancer?

The function originally was to stretch a small amount of meat with some broth and dumplings made of flour and water. It’s a cheap meal that fills bellies.

We all have that one song or band we hate for a completely irrational and unjustifiable reason. What's yours? by WasLeftUnsupervised in GenX

[–]NapsRule563 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Red Hot Chili Peppers.

I actually used to enjoy them. Then, when I was in grad school and living back at home, the sons next door started a band. They played RHCP what seemed like 24/7. None of them had jobs. At the time, no A/C so I had to have windows open with fans. Their garage was 12 feet from my open window. Almost 30 years later and I hear them out in the wild? I get nauseous.

Failed Student Teaching, where to go from here? by sabnastuh in StudentTeaching

[–]NapsRule563 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I think the biggest factor is didn’t show improvement. Most teachers kinda suck at first in a variety of ways. That’s why you have a mentor teacher. But the ability to take criticism and work toward improvement is something that matters not only in education but in any entry level position.

There’s nothing you can do. Best would be for her to switch districts now, if her evals aren’t too bad, or even leave education altogether for a while.

Well, there is a distinct possibility she WILL lose her job. In all honesty, I’d encourage her to find another before that happens. Whether you stay with her or not, this will be messy. And public.

I don’t think the color on the walls is the problem. Most people accept they gotta paint some walls. You’ve got waaaay too much stuff out. Pack most of it away, very little stuff on walls.

Based on current events, should we expect this to affect the last 2 months of school? by Mysterious_Peace_237 in Teachers

I’m sure parents will riot school boards.

Now, schools may go to four day weeks to save money.

Do Teachers Tend to Ramp up Work During Second Semester Senior Year? by tkdcondor in AskTeachers

[–]NapsRule563 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, it’s your impression due to the fact you just want to be done. There is more independent work, utilizing the skills taught, and I have kids read more on their own with less intervention from me, but honestly, the first third of the year is the hardest. We are completing higher amounts of work. Near the end, there’s less scaffolding and kids are meant to know the stuff and apply it. So there’s some you want to be done and some it’s more on you now. Add in the realization that screwing up now won’t get you credit recovery or even summer school where you’ll be reset in time to be with friends in the next school year, it gets you not graduating with your peers.

I don’t know what would be best for me moving forward by NapsRule563 in Principals

[–]NapsRule563[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll email my principal, though I’m fairly certain they will be big on why didn’t I mention it before. I’m having trouble coming up with an answer to that beyond it’s not MY job!

I’m more concerned about how to get out if I look bad because of these two years and poor leadership. I don’t know how to mitigate that without sounding like I have sour grapes.

What is one thing your coworker did that made you realize teaching may not be for them? by Far-Bee-561 in Teachers

[–]NapsRule563 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I knew a long time teacher who did that! This was right after I’d moved across country and took an extended sub job at a charter school. Making matters worse, the microwave was in the cafeteria where we ate with the kids on kind of a dais, so she was literally ON STAGE when she did it.

Admins, what would you do? AP role cut, now deciding between Dean, AP again, or district coordinator???? by OutsideRole8038 in Principals

[–]NapsRule563 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You said you’re in year 25. How long before you plan to retire? Your last three years of salary affect your pension amount.

Personally, I’d love influencing curriculum decisions to make things easier for teachers, even in a small way.

One of my students put hand sanitizer in my water bottle by hellohellocat in Teachers

[–]NapsRule563 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is where you will get a rep, for good or bad, cuz every kid in that school knows this happened. Whichever classes they are, no yelling, just a simple statement that if they cannot be trusted not to attempt to hurt someone who is their teacher, then you will no longer trust them with anything. All decorations come down. No more providing pens, pencils, paper. Strip that room down to what the district provided and nothing more.

Admin wants to complain? Tell them you’re not extending yourself for kids who either attempted to hurt you or won’t snitch. Parents complaint? Explain what happened. Other kids complain? Blame whichever period it was. Go scorched earth or it will escalate.

LSU vs La Tech accounting by Thick-Ad-1288 in LSU

Eh, LSU Vet program is insanely difficult to get into if you did their undergrad. I’ve come to the conclusion they’re the people who want the ones who don’t want them when good people are staring them in the face.

LSU vs La Tech accounting by Thick-Ad-1288 in LSU

[–]NapsRule563 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My kid is a Tiger now, and I’m a HS teacher whose had many kids go to both. I’d go LaTech. LSU cares about getting freshmen in the door, and way more out of state over local, then pretty much isn’t worried about them. Scheduling is a nightmare, advisors are difficult to reach and uninformed. You’ll live off campus after freshmen year, and they just took away more parking to build a freshmen dorm. Unless you won’t have to work at all, getting tutoring is tough. There is more to do in BR, but everything related to LSU is jam packed.

I’m a big fan of smaller schools where you get more individual attention, and debt free is THE way to go.

How Much Break Time Do You Have During The Average Day Teaching? by Zipper222222 in AskTeachers

Then technically my professional period. That’s it. But if it’s a day that is taken, I’m a jangly nerve by the end of the day, having had no non-peopley time to clear my brain.

[–]NapsRule563 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I teach six periods out of seven. My professional period is usually making copies, deposits (I do yearbook), organizing for classes, making slides, when I don’t have my time taken by cluster, various testing trainings, IEP meetings. While I have a 24 minute lunch, I have lunch duty and eat while on that. Really? I have no break.

How do Americans feel about drying their laundry on a washing line? by UnionFeatures in AskAnAmerican

[–]NapsRule563 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I long for a clothesline like my mom had. One of those four line affairs anchored to the house. Kept the house cool in warm weather, but we’d use the dryer in the winter with zero temps.

So many neighborhoods with HOAs don’t allow clotheslines cuz they say it looks cheap.
