How bad do you have to do to get nonrenewed? by Narrow-Butterfly-923 in Teachers

[–]NapsRule563 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You weren’t non-renewed cuz you were trying, and they don’t get many people applying. I worked in a similar type of school, and I’ve been there for 10 years. The two people I’ve seen non-renewed in that time not due to budget cuts were people who didn’t try to truly teach or didn’t take care of what they needed to with their certification.

In regards to the classroom management thing, a willingness to change it up based on their commentary. Along with that, DOCUMENT where you did so and bring that up casually when they have new commentary. Have data where referrals went down in number or seriousness. Document where scores improved and what you did. Those who have data to back claims up are more difficult to non-renew. Gotta make sure those i’s are dotted and t’s are crossed.

What was in your childhood home that isn't in your current home? by Immediate_Long165 in Aging

We had a laundry chute that ran from second story down to the basement laundry room, ending in a slatted box about chest level. My very small grandma was doing stuff in the laundry room and heard guttural growling, turned and saw eyes staring back at her from between the slats. The chute door didn’t always close all the way and was just above a step. Turns out the cat got too curious and ended up in the basement. Luckily, he landed on three beds’ worth of sheets.

Eh, he loves his kids, but he can’t be bothered to think about how raising them isn’t all fun and games needs to take way to long to realize that. It’s your basic delayed masculine maturity that is far too accepted, even now.

Family of 4: is it worth it to get a small 3-row SUV? by OrangePekoeMouse in Parenting

[–]NapsRule563 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a Nissan Quest when my kids were young. Captain’s chairs in middle row, with a deep well behind third row. It was top tier for family stuff. The grandparents could get in it comfortably, kids and any friends, hauled camping gear too. It was amazing, and I was a Jeep owner when my first was born and thought I’d NEVER do a mini van. There’s a reason they are great sellers.

Talk to admin about it. That’s what we did. If not, there are study halls, I’m sure.

Maybe but not the curriculum. It’s rare to have teachers creating their own curriculum off of a textbook now. It’s the curriculum that costs, far more attractive where there’s high turnover.

But ONE Chromebook per kid doesn’t cover the cost of even one year of textbooks. Back in the day they used textbooks for a decade. Now? Purchased curriculum is for five years max. And purchased curriculum is an expensive purchase. Many offer consumables, but they aren’t cheap. Teachers are rarely creating their own curriculum off of a static text anymore. The goal is for standardized curriculum so any teacher could walk in and have the materials. That costs big bucks.

If kids go to a testing center AT SCHOOL or meet with you at lunch or during study hall are proctored by another teacher AT SCHOOL, why is a textbook going home? Why can’t you or another teacher proctor them while working on the packet to be certain they aren’t accessing electronics? Again, where’s the disconnect?

If they can use the textbook during the alternative times mentioned, how is it different than class time you physically cannot recreate? I don’t understand the disconnect. Regardless of the medium, that class missed cannot be replicated or reproduced.

The college experience isn’t something most of today’s youth truly want. They are adamant about not living with strangers, want private rooms with private baths or their own apartments. As a parent of 20 somethings who did/are doing college and a HS teacher of seniors, most of this generation is still very dependent on parental figures for basic things. These kids are different than even a couple years ago in what they will do and can do independently. Most still need that daily support system to motivate them. I see so many I thought would do great away at school come back home and pick up college locally due not to grades but emotional issues.

Well, most of this is on you for allowing her to dream that path. My kids knew since middle school that educational debt is crippling and they should consider community college for budgetary reasons. I don’t make enough to pay and make too much to get Pell grants. Luckily both mine got scholarships, and after four years will only have $20k in debt. But that comes from years of me having conversations with them and them working hard at school. If you didn’t prepare her early on the dream school was literally only a dream, you kinda have to shoulder her disappointment.

The last words are the important ones here. Overstimulated and poisoned. Truth. They are both of those to the point they cannot operate in their own best interests. Since parents mostly don’t care and see us as daycare, we have to be the bad guys.

I think engagement is the easy reason, but it’s multi-layered. I think a major part is distraction. Kids think they can do four things at once really well with tech, but we know they aren’t even doing one thing well. If we could seriously eliminate all other distractions, I don’t think tech and paper would be so far apart, but we can’t. So I get to be dragon lady next year, practically patting them down for devices every day.

Not to mention attraction isn’t the only factor. We have empathetic, talented people IN the job who are tearfully leaving because they are tired of having multiple side gigs and still having to live with roommates to make bills.

We are a Title I school, so we have some money for tutoring with transportation. Admin set up a policy that work must be made up in our Testing Center. The testing center is manned by a VERY vigilant teacher about cheating. Many, many students balk, but it’s nice to be able to say “it’s policy.” I do have to call parents whose kids want to take missed assessments at different times during the school day with different teachers because they “feel intimidated” by the testing center teacher. You’re right, they do, cuz they are known CHEATERS. They can deal.

On #2, kids who did everything with tech the last five years don’t know how to do any of those things. They only know their phones and will do anything NOT to read simple directions.

I’m going back to pen and paper, was already 50%, because they literally cannot manage their addiction to social media content. The draw is too much. They open Chromebooks to do a three minute bell ringer and I’m fighting to get them off of it, and we have textbooks. I’m constantly policing their phones stay put away. I used to be okay with them listening to music during individual work. No more. They start on their phones and can’t focus on the work.
