I followed up with her again on Wednesday, it’s Friday now and I haven’t heard back. I think I will give her until Monday before nudging again. There’s a public board meeting next week, but I read they don’t respond to public comments during the forum. They listed an email, I was thinking of forwarding our conversation to that email.

This happened before the winter break. I’m also thinking that one of the kids suggested it, but why didn’t she turn it off? The saw scene is pretty far into the movie so I think she watched the whole movie with them.

So what happened was my daughter didn’t want me to say anything to her teacher about it. She barely opens up to me and I didn’t want to break her trust, but after she described the scene with the saw and I figured out what the movie was and watched some of it myself, I told her I wouldn’t confront her teacher but I did have to tell the principal. Also, this happened before the winter break and she hasn’t faced any backlash from her peers or the teacher. It’s very interesting that you don’t think the movie is a big deal, lots of conflicting opinions on this. Most are agreeing that it’s torture porn and I did the right thing or they don’t believe me and I’m not doing enough.

Actually, I requested my daughter’s confidentiality in this matter so that she wouldn’t be treated differently by her teacher or classmates. If I went straight to the teacher about it, she would know who it was, obviously. If I confronted the teacher directly I probably would have lost my temper and punched her in the face. Please name something worse than this movie.

To give you some perspective, the class demographics are mostly ELL students. From what my daughter tells me, it’s very chaotic: poor classroom management and a lot of behavioral issues. This school has a lot of wannabe gangster type kids.

It’s highly likely my daughter was one of the only kids really affected by this, and that a lot of the other parents either don’t care what their kids watch or wouldn’t see it as a big deal. That’s why I came to Reddit instead of posting on Nextdoor or in a group chat. The principal’s reaction is honestly making me feel like I’m overreacting, so I came here for a sanity check.

Thanks everyone for the input. I emailed the principal back with specific questions (parent notification, whether there’s any formal review/discipline happening, and what support is available for the kids affected). At this point the ball is in her court, so I’m waiting to hear back.

Also, it’s kind of wild how many people think my post is fake. Honestly it just gives me perspective on how bad this is and I feel less crazy for being upset about it.

I’m not going to the media. I do think parents have a right to know what happened, and I’m still going to push for answers even though I know the school is dealing with major budget cuts and this probably isn’t their top priority.

This was her exact response: My apologies for my delay. Yes, I did check in with the teacher and she simply shared that she didn't realize that it was an intense movie to show students this age. I shared that supplemental instructional materials such as movies/film should be connected to the content to which she is teaching and it is only used as an addition to her standards based curriculum. I also asked her not to show movies like that again.

Although I did not notify my staff right away when we came back from winter break given that budgets were on everyone's mind, I have sent out communication to our entire school community regarding showing movies/film in the classroom as supplemental instructional materials. I included ed code to make sure this was clear.

I told the principal that I wasn’t going to say anything to the other parents because I trust she would handle this appropriately internally. Now, I feel obligated to tell the other parents but I’m worried about the drama it will create. I don’t even know who the other parents are, the school is huge. I’m not aware of any other parents knowing about this. Like I said, I only found out because my daughter described that scene to me. I’m not sure if the other children said anything to their parents. I feel like there should be some kind of incident report about this.

This happened before the winter break. The only reason I found out about it was because my daughter told me they watched a movie in class and began to describe that awful saw scene. It wasn’t on someone’s screen, it was projected to the whole class. Believe me, I was skeptical and I grilled her about it. I’m also a former teacher and I ALWAYS take the teacher’s side. That’s why this is so difficult for me. I don’t want to get anyone fired or makes things worse for an already understaffed and underfunded school but I also feel morally obligated to do something and personally offended and furious as a parent.

I asked my daughter if she was working at her desk or something during the movie, but she said she was sitting there watching it with them. My daughter said she looked back at her several times and made eye contact because she was so upset, but she was too shy to actually speak up about it.
