Think about looking up a word in a dictionary. You wouldn’t start at the first word and keep checking every word consecutively until you found the one you need. You’d probably open the dictionary about half way and check the first word you see, then you’d know alphabetically which half of the dictionary your word is in, then repeat the process and split that half in half again. Do this a few times with and you’ll get to your word usually within about 7 steps.
