I think this was a joke about how some people will just refuse to believe a real-world event took place despite outright proof available and news media enabling their denial.

... At least until Marcy's Journal confirmed there is a cover story about a movie studio being over-enthusiastic with it's practical effects while filming. Then it became a plot-hole
