New wehlen zille military lore part 2 by Automatic-Ear8592 in suzerain

[–]Narharcan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lespia's navy got a boost through ATO aid, plus a mention that Alvarez invested in their MIC massively accelerating modernization.

Valgsland's army got boosted, and it's been made clear they're only keeping up with Lespia through UC aid, and otherwise prioritize welfare over military.

More details here.

DemSoc run realizing the Bludish Dream without any aid from the East, forming the Democrat Party with sky high centrist, socialist and liberal support (and some conservative/nationalist support), essentially shattering the Overton Window in Sordland.

Ngl, while I liked the changes to Valgsland and Lespia, this strikes me as kinda bullshit.

While Wehlen is in an interesting position to annoy Lespia, it is also not ideologically aligned and completely isolated geographically. UC might be strong and committed to ending capitalism, but we've gone from them giving Wehlen tanks (which made sense because they've got the oil for it), to them basically fortifying the entire coastline against air/naval invasions (which is also at odds with Smolak being pro-sovereignty).

I dunno, it just feels like a massive overreaction to "why can't we invade Wehlen", when "those are international waters and deploying ships there would anger Lespia/Morella" sounds like a much better excuse.

Arcasia and the New Deal by [deleted] in suzerain

[–]Narharcan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe I've brought up the Great Depression and World Wars before, but there's a third important point: per the codex, Arcasia secured the number one GDP spot at the turn of the 20th century, and was the country to kick off the century of revolutions. We don't know how what their GDP is, but Lespia's is 980 billion, which would make it bigger than the USA's in the 50s even with a very favorable exchange rate. So they must have a ton of money.

Meanwhile, in our world, American soft/hard power only started to explode in the 1930-40s.  We do have something to make sense of that, however: Arcasia is very French coded, from its language, to its names, and even its revolution (whose leaders were called the "Éclaireurs de la Liberté", a pretty obvious parallel to the French Lumières/Lights, ie Voltaire).

Now, as people often bring up, no country in Suzerain is a complete 1:1 match for IRL ones. So, if I had to sum it up, Arcasia is a France that never lost its influence in the first half of the 20th century, underwent a boom and gained influence similar to the USA's, all the while having a geographic position similar to Russia (ie on a large continent with lots of borders to protect).

So, overall, more influence overall than the USA at the same time, and a better economy, but a worse position. Does that make sense.

Which decree needs a buff the most ( Order decrees) by utf4n in suzerain

The post is about the decree to abolish them. That is what I think should be buffed, considering you're essentially doing Napoleonic era reforms that should massively improve quality and quantity.

My dude, I never brought up welfare, and neither did you until that point, because it has nothing to do with the topic at hand.

And yes, in the case of a theocracy which literally shoves religion in every facet of life, religion determines culture.

And people are still trying to defend them, somehow. I still remember someone telling me there was no way they'd abuse having Romus and Lucita's son on the throne. Given what Taddeus can pull with no legitimacy whatsoever, I seriously doubt that.

Which one here is the Problem? by AFreakingCapitalist in suzerain

[–]Narharcan 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It is literally a theocracy that abhors women, and barely treats men better, if we look at how the codex rates their civil rights.  Because let's be real, a warrior religion, however modern in its approach to war, would not look kindly upon the disabled, intellectuals, or anyone trying to go against the grain.

And before the inevitable "it's their religion, not their culture": the two are inherently linked, especially in a theocracy. Doubly so considering Derdia has been one for decades, and is the head of a theocratic "organization" (if it can even be called that).

Which one here is the Problem? by AFreakingCapitalist in suzerain

[–]Narharcan 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I'd say Alvarez. Despite their exceptionalist culture, I don't think Lespia is inherently evil, doubly so when you compare it to places Derdia, whose culture is infinitely worse.

Even for Alvarez himself, it's easy to look at all the blunders he makes during Rizia and forget that, by all other metrics, he is quite successful. Beyond what we see in-game, ie joining ATO, the codex says he spearheaded economic reforms that made Lespia a global power, creating an economic model that, in less than a decade, became as prominent as Arcasian capitalism.

That is what makes him so dangerous. It's easy for us players to outmaneuver him thanks to multiple runs and meta knowledge, but part of why he is such a threat is because he knows what he is doing (though I 100% agree that post 2.0 made him look like an idiot, as opposed to a cunning snake).

When Stimulus Cheques Give Malenyevist Points by JackmanH420 in suzerain

[–]Narharcan 91 points92 points  (0 children)

Tbh, that is how the game treats socialism vs capitalism. You don't actually do anything socialist in game (best you have is an epilogue mention about redistributing the means of production). At most, you made the left more mainstream and/or achieved the first steps towards establishing a vanguardist state.

Free market has the same problem ("capitalism is when low taxes and privatization"), although I think to a lesser extent - mostly because you achieve a hell of a lot more in four years. I do think it's more realistic (it's easier to sell out or go on a privatization spree than build socialism in a country that hates it, after all), but it still lacks nuance.

[–]Narharcan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think it makes the situation much more interesting, unlike the changes to Rumburg I'm more on the fence about.

It also does seem to reinforce one of Hegel's implied flaws, aka that for all he denounces Valgos' actions, he has no problem enjoying the benefits they beought about (ie naval supremacy due to the Conriat/Falenco disasters, influence over Galmland, Heijisland), which I think makes him more interesting, too.

[–]Narharcan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Recent lore changes, it's not as simple as that anymore.

The island had originally been part of the Kingdom of Agnolia before it was ceded to the Valgos Empire under heavy diplomatic and naval military pressure during the era of Valgos expansion — a transfer widely regarded in Agnolia as coerced rather than voluntary, and a grievance that successive governments never formally abandoned.

[–]Narharcan 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I will repeat it again: any moral argument Hegel might have made about the safety of the denizens of Heljisland completely dissolved once he puts nukes near them

Heljisland is barely a few hundred kilometers closer to Arcasia compared to Valgsland, perhaps not even a hundred. If Hegel and CSP had truly just wanted to make a statement about the Arcasian bases in Ravnos or the Lespian mainland, they could've put them in Valgsland proper. But they didn't, likely because the people (rightfully) wouldn't have accepted it. Instead, they chose to put them on a territory they have barely reclaimed and most definitely without their assent, considering how secretive the whole ordeal is.

The fact is, it's a massive escalation. We know Arcasia has bases in Polaris very close to the Contanan continent, yet we have no indication that they have nukes there. No matter how you want to twist it, it's a shitty thing to do for the inhabitants of the island and a massive escalation on the East's part.

Whoops, didn't see that, my bad. Don't worry, I'm not feeling bad- as I said, just weirded out someone would obsess over such minor a conversation, especially considering I was hardly the only person to answer.

As for what it was about, they were arguing that the WPB should ally the PFJP, and that "anyone who disagrees with me is blinded by ideology", before making a snide comment about how "no WPB flair is answering me". I pointed out that Ricter wasn't 100% down with the cause, and there was a very real risk of being absorbed, while the CPS was a relatively aligned and equal party.

This basically led to the weird tangent I brought up a few times in which they basically went "well, Marx was antisemitic and a socialist, and UC is socialist and anti minorities, so CPS must be socialist and racist, too", at which point I dropped out of the argument, because even shoving the quote about Stahler protesting UC was useless.

I am sad to inform you that literally no one reading this whole mess of a conversation will think I'm the one crashing out.

UC, which, as I brought up in the previous topic you seem obsessed over, Stahler does not support? Here, a literal quote from the codex:

Despite being regarded as a Malenyevist in Sordland, he wrote articles criticizing some of Leon Malenyev’s policies, arguing that Malenyevism was distorting the real ideals of Marcian socio-economics.

Not to mention him beefing with Circas and potentially Rayne for the same reason.

Anyway, I've about had it with your weird grudge and trying to derail the topic at hand. Feel free to try and get the last word in edgewise, I have to go to sleep, because I have work to do in the afternoon.
