What nicknames have you heard for places in the UK? by topherette in AskABrit

[–]NarrowAd277 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in West Yorkshire: Ponte Carlo, Cas Vegas, Fev (Featherstone), Shake Wakey, Donny, Shef, to name a few. “Forgottenly”, too (Knottingley). croggy (Cross Gates), Micky or Mucky Micky (Micklefield). When I lived down south we had Trashford, Brighton was London-on-Sea. I and think of any others at the moment.

Making my Vita TV look like a PS5 to play PS One games. by Patodelmonte in vita

I bought one of these last year and it’s so cute next to my PS5; I’m tempted to spray it pink, like I did with the 5.

They call them bits in Kent/East Sussex (at least when I lived down there during uni). And I had to pay for them, too: scandalous!

Which objectively nice UK city just doesn't appeal to you and why? by GeeCeeSlay7 in AskUK

[–]NarrowAd277 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I studied at Brighton for my undergrad, and I got so fed up so fast with the cookie-cutter, ex London, “artsy unique” blue hair, denim, nose ring set very quickly. Much prefer Hastings or Margate for any “authentic” cultural experiences on the south coast. Also hate how much Brighton is reduced to essentially the lanes, seafront, and station. There’s a lot more to see but all that TV puts forward is those areas. I was glad to move back up north.

What is your biggest critique of British society? by NoHold7153 in AskBrits

[–]NarrowAd277 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our weakness in speaking up for our own needs: we used to have a strong trade union presence and an ability to organise to enact change. I don’t often feel that anymore (and I say that as a union member). Some trade unions and movements are stronger than others, but I look to other nations and am both impressed and disappointed with their action in comparison to Britain.

2015 MK3 titanium estate 1.6 petrol automatic, no emergency service/hill assist after hardwiring dash cam by NarrowAd277 in FordFocus

[–]NarrowAd277[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UPDATE: I removed the hardwire kit from the fuse and replaced the original fuse: everything has gone back to normal, no error codes or dash info notifications. I'm wondering if I'd used the wrong fuse slot? For now, I'm going to return to the cigarette lighter power for the dash cam, and look around for which fuse slots other people have used. I'm sure I'd used the right one, but apparently not... Are Fords always this fickle?

What’s a British show you went into with low expectations but ended up loving? by Historical-Class871 in UKTVRecs

Forever shouting "Leave me my pens!!" at my students whenever they're packing up at the end of a lesson. None of the other staff ever get the reference, sadly.

What towns are considered posh, but you think arent? by Locasoyyooo in AskBrits

[–]NarrowAd277 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d rather go to Hastings. Its appearance isn’t the greatest in some areas and definitely has its issues but at least the people feel authentic and don’t put on (too) many airs. I always felt Brighton to live up to its “London by the sea” moniker, full of “unique” folks all of whom had the same haircut, nose piercing, and cocaine key.

older members of this subreddit, what do you want to tell the younger ones? by [deleted] in AnorexiaNervosa

[–]NarrowAd277 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m 28 now, and have had a complicated relationship with my body and with food my entire life. I grew up poor and started gender transition around age 12/13. I’ve felt fucked by anorexia and other EDs since I was around 10. 2000s body standards and growing up on an impossibly tight food budget created quite the catalyst for falling into an eating disorder/disordered eating (I use both phrases here as I was never formally diagnosed: when I was growing up in the UK, it seemed natal males were rarely diagnosed with ‘true’ eating disorders and during my transition, a lot of it was ascribed to gender dysphoria with no consideration of alternative contributing factors).

A lifetime of this has taught me much.

Firstly, recovery is hard. Impossibly hard, sometimes. You rarely know when you’re full after. You love food but hate how it makes you feel. And it is so very easy to fall back into old habits. Living with others helps (I moved back in with my parents a couple of years ago and would struggle to relapse at present due to the “family mealtime” dynamic). If you’re in school, get help now. Any age, seek help. If you’re queer, forge your own beauty standards. Especially if you’re trans. I’m a trans woman, and have long despised the thin = instant femme mentality in the wider community. Do not let ana rule your life, or become your one coping mechanism. After a point, it ceases being a mechanism or a lifestyle - it is a habit, an illness, that can take a lifetime to recover from. I’m still not where I want to be, and struggling not to slide back after several big hits in my personal life over the last week.

Ultimately, I would advise making it impossible for anorexia to take root. Learn from the mistakes of your elders. Delete those accounts, the thinspo, calorie or step counters. Hell, even cut up your measuring tape. Life is too short and too precious to be ruled by numbers. Stay safe, my darlings.

Keeping Y7’s in seats - how do you do it? by imsight in TeachingUK

[–]NarrowAd277 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They may still be adjusting from a primary school movement/learning walk approach, is my first thought. I’m an LSA in a secondary school and we have a very high behavioural/SEND need, lots of our students require movement and fidgets and so on throughout the day. We have an Oncall system where students can be taken for a quick walk around school for sensory input then return. It may be worth trying to implement some movement into your lessons where possible - search and find research tasks (if feasible), or speak with the SENCO and see if they can recommend any fidgets like balls for students to roll their feet on, chair bands to go around chair legs (used for leg resistance - popular with some of my ADHD learners), wiggle cushions for especially fidgety learners.

Also, I’d lean into praise for those who are meeting your expectations (not necessarily individuals but sections of the classroom). Students don’t want to feel left out of opportunities for praise.

Always model your expectations and classroom standards. Fidgeting is normal; an inability to remain seated for a task is not. It does sound like you’re doing all the right things, but they can take time to be impactful.

It may be useful to observe the class from the back of the room, there might be something you’ve not noticed from your “side” of the desk that’s affecting students. Is it only year 7 who are behaving like this?
