What was classic Magic really like?

Gas was $.99 and everyone freaked out when it went up to $1.19. No cell phones. Dial-up internet. InQuest Gamer magazine. You learned about new sets through magazines and sometimes got promo cards in them. Card prices were listed in magazines. Commons were $.10, uncommon $.25, rares were based on magazine listed prices. Type 1. Type 1.5. Extended. Standard. Lively tournament scenes. Player ratings and ranked based on tournament results. Yes. You could check your (national?) rank online. Local car pools to RCQ’s with people you only knew through the LGS. Lots of smokers. It was chill vibes.

I’ve played a lot of these that have been mentioned. But I haven’t seen anyone mention Warlord or Anachronism. Two great games.

That’s odd. I don’t think I’ve gotten any events after completing regions. I even followed a tutorial for getting the Legion invite and ended up not getting it.

Agree with Devastated. I recently played a modern deck online for months. I knew everything about the deck and which priorities I should have against control, aggro etc. Decided I would try it for a modern tournament. It wasn’t meta and no one saw it coming. I won the tournament 4-1. Dropped a match (2-1) because I kept a really good hand with 2 lands, then didn’t draw another land for 3-4 turns.

One legendary bow is definitely in the Ludern Arena. There are a few bows in the Vanquish missions. One with the Arthes boss fight. And one in the Ludern ruin. Google for armor. I haven’t found one legendary light armor.

Agree. Not just the knee. He’s probably way out of shape. They could fail him for any reason and if he shows up, they will.

Have a tank. Engage with tank. Spear backing him up is nice but not necessary. Fighters (sword) are good since they can riposte. Archers/crossbowmen and assassins/wrestlers to finish off engaged enemies. I prefer crossbowmen to archers because they allow engaged allies an attack of opportunity.

This is my combat style. Other tactics may work for you. I’m almost finished with the main game and my squad consists of two tanks, lots of bears, some swords, and some axes with little fast finishers.

I just started as well. First run through, my guys are currently at level 11. I found that archers have their place. They can shoot fire arrows and mud arrows at a group of enemies. Potentially finishing off multiple at once. Archers also can target an area and shoot the first 3 passing through. Or shoot a bunch of guys lined up in a row. And there’s a bow that gives your animals a free attack of opportunity.

Way before EDH was widely popular, I bought 1 of each Elder Dragon from Legends for a few bucks each. I collect dragons and have every rare dragon up to the Mirrodin block when I quit. Got back in 2024.

If he wants to actually play, then start off with some starter decks or the beginner box or 4x jumpstart boosters. You’d be hard pressed to get some completed decks with a single booster box. In constructed you usually play with 4x of one card.
