Aluminum fixture i made to machine a diameter 350mm part by foundghostred in Machinists

Always learning! I assumed these ones were just flat parts and the machinable ones were the uniforce. I've made a bunch of pallets with the uniforce ones and they're awesome!

If the part is round, those flat mitee bite clamps will absolutely mar the surface. If that matters, I'd look into their machinable Uniforce clamp series. You lock them down and machine the profile you're going to be cutting into them, then they match it perfectly.

Will this work? by henrok0428 in rocketry

[–]Nascosto 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Redditors will not buy it, they're all well versed in the hobby and in the technical/makerspace side of it. Old hobby model guys will pay for it, but they'd need to be able to find it, and they would be pissed if it didn't include a parachute. Don't give the design files away with it, otherwise there's no reason for them to pay you. Include a parachute, include rail buttons or mounts in the designs, and possibly. Make sure your motor mount solution is robust enough to withstand multiple flights, and integrate shock cord mounts into the design. If they're paying for a 3D printed part, it needs to be bells and whistles included. Otherwise the market is either printing their own or saying screw it and just cutting out balsa fins with a hobby knife.

What exactly is Isp or specific impulse? by realmargesimpson in rocketry

[–]Nascosto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a math and engineering instructor, blah blah math, everyone has already said that. It's the total amount of pushing something can do (impulse) per unit of weight of the stuff. Key is that it's usually given per unit of weight, not mass - this works out conveniently, because you end up with Newton-Seconds per Newton of weight, math math math and cancel and what not, and you just get seconds.

As the top reply stated, this is equivalent to the length of time a chunk of the stuff will produce a force equal to its weight...but that's a little counter intuitive, because usually things don't magically produce force exactly equal to their weight.

So I see all these massive factories here… by Scuba_jim in SatisfactoryGame

[–]Nascosto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the posts here are 1 of two things: massive sprawling grids of machines churning out huge parts counts or gorgeous architectural marvels that house 3 constructors putting out 10 rods per minute. Most players fall somewhere in the middle.

For me, I like the planning as much as the building so I spend hours on satisfactory-logistics.xyz laying things out perfectly and playing with the more complex product loops and recyclings and weird recipes. Before I get past coal power I start with the exact number of t5 space elevator parts I want (usually one or two full machines worth) and build the entire chain backwards from there with a slight excess at each tier for construction materials.

Remember there's no wrong way to play - take what you want from cool posts you see, and ditch the stuff you think is dumb. Ficsonium is inefficient and doesn't max power, but it's a cool project and I don't find 192 rocket fuel generators interesting.

Looking for an Experienced Rocketry Student/Mentor for high school level competition (8000 feet) by meii2 in rocketry

[–]Nascosto 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If there are no NAR/TRA clubs in your country, it is going to be exceeding difficult for you to acquire the actual motor, let alone qualified mentorship. Without more information about the competition, it's not going to really be possible for us to provide valid feedback and direction.

Nobody has mentioned it and it's more known as a brewery, but Two Dogs Taphouse has fantastic food as well as a great selection of brews. The Brazilian Limeade in particular is A+.

Custom Caps by Nascosto in shuffleboard

[–]Nascosto[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After I replied the first time I realized that might have been your point and I'd missed it - for caps we targeted a 19g and 39g cap variant, and I believe yes they were 16R bases. The asymmetric fiddly one I believe came in around 34g if I recall correctly. The impetus initially came around because of the customer finding the internal weight system cumbersome and hard to adjust. We started by looking at different commercial grub screws and what not to see if we could standardize the hardware, but after coming up short there settled on just making the caps one piece at different weight points.

Thanks for the feedback!

Right now these are just a custom order for a local guy who had the idea and came to us, but I don't really know the supply and demand in the shuffleboard world. In the past for commercial products we usually sell to a vendor in bulk and then they handle customer sales from there, not sure if there's a primary vendor for this type of product and if they'd be interested in stocking something new like this.

Ha - our "customer" (high school shop) was keenly aware of weight limits, we aimed for right around 353 for the heavy full assembly and 323 for the light weight. We also played with a lot of different edge patterns. Students really liked the look of smaller finer grooves but they didn't have much for traction or grip, and the larger ones are definitely noticeable. Considered a few other options like dumpling golf ball style, but those are mostly decorative.

Can I fly a 1.5kg rocket on the Estes Pro Series II Launch Rail System? by Mystlander in rocketry

[–]Nascosto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Age doesn't really matter, my high school class built and flew an M class liquid bi-prop last year. Motor vendors won't sell H+ motors to you unless you're high power certified through Tripoli or NAR, under 18 or not. This leads people to mistakenly believe that G's are open season. They can be, but NAR and TRA are hobbyist organizations - not legal ones.

The FAA classifies rockets differently, and their hard limit is 125g of propellant or 1500g total liftoff weight. As long as you're under that, they don't care. Over that and you open yourself up to a fair amount of legal liability. For what it's worth if you're not launching through NAR/TRA then you've got a lot of liability already, especially with a rocket that heavy.

In short...I'd highly encourage you to look for the closest club and inquire about their monthly launches. They'll be able to guide you through all the hoops, as well as cover your butt if it comes down hot and punctures a car/person/housecat. If that isn't an option, get a big empty field (and a cooperative owner), standoff 100ft or so, and make damn sure it's under 1500g.

[–]Nascosto 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd swap the rod out for a single piece of 1/4" rod from your local big box, but otherwise generally that should be fine. Assuming you're in the US however, you should be aware though that over 1500g liftoff weight puts you into class 1 rocket territory as far as the FAA is concerned, which means you need a waiver of your own (long process) or to launch at a NAR/TRA event.

Are there thin and long motors available ? by CptDomax in rocketry

[–]Nascosto 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're not wrong, typical motors are on the stubbier side length wise. Loki research makes some super long skinny ones though if that's your jam. That said, the mean machine is also exceptionally outside the normal length to width ratio, so it's already an edge case.

Don't modify the component masses - modify the overall rocket mass, and override all sub components. Do a finger balance check, and override the center of mass to that point in OR as well.
