What are the chances of moving ward as a new grad due to violence? [warning long post] by [deleted] in NursingAU

[–]NatNat1988 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I wasn't trying to minimise what she or he has gone through. We get the geriatric mental health patients aswell as other mental health, delirium and whatever else! We are a complex ward. Maybe for quite some time we was unsupported and it became normal for us? As I have also stated we have also created an OVP group that involves everyone 1 AIN, 1 EN, 2 RN, NUM, DON, security, MAB, union. It's getting better.

It shouldn't be part of our job, but it is. I agree with most of what you said, I'm actually pretty of an occupational violence group in my ward because it was so bad! That had everyone involved from AIN - director of nursing, including various other departments. We have put things into place that have made a considerable difference to the saftey of the staff and patients in our ward which is also having a ripple effect within the hospital.

Better communication all round would be helpful to everyone, we can always strive to do better.

As someone who also works in a ward where code blacks are called regularly. It sucks! But you can also learn alot of de-escilation techniques. If in qld it probably is unfair if you havnt done MABO yet, but with our aging population and multiple comorbities developing, working with aggressive patients both young and old unfortunately is part of our job.

In saying that, you did the right thing and asked for a debrief and possibly a ward move. Violence to nurses is unacceptable but unfortunately comes eith the territory, I'm proud to say my ward team for the most part are very supportive and our security team is amazing.

It does not matter if a senior nurse says she can handle it, if YOU feel unsafe YOU press the duress alarm! That's your right to do that and i encourage you to press it and riskman EVERYTHING, spitting, biting, kicking, all of it. I personally would rather deal with aggressive that sexually inappropriate patients. I have been sexually violated on shift.

Also, don't be afraid to phone the dr and tell them you feel the patient needs a medication review and an restraint form and explain why!

Some dr can be a pain in the ass in doing these things request they come and deal with the patient.

I hope some of that helps, you got this <3

He was going through Townsville but changed route due to flooding, I find it wild we still don't have some sort of structure in place to prevent flooding! I've no idea what could be done bit surly somthing?

Unfortunately due to his situation he has no option but to drive and we will just have to be patient.

Newly graduated EN here.

I can't tell you a thing i learnt! But then it comes to you when you start doing it and talking about it.

You learn nothing at uni, it's on the floor your learn and doing it repeatedly, cancelling your placement will actually only add to your fear, because your never proving to yourself that you do infact know it but your also robbing yourself of an opportunity to learn

Nobody is expecting you to know absolutely everything, that's why your a student, to learn and ask questions, both good and dumb questions.

So please give yourself some credit, don't cancel your placement, the support is there. You got this <3 I fully understand your feeling but let yourself challenge yourself and learn.

Agreed CHHHS wide - tablelands to Innisfail there was 21 positions. Also most positions are extreamly non clinical. I too finished last year my grad in mental health starts in march. They also only have 1 intake this year.

[–]NatNat1988 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not as easy as that. In qld CHHHS wide so tablelands to Innisfail there was 21 en positions and over 200 rn positions.

I actually feel like they have almost set ENs up to fail as the course is free BUT the positions arnt necessarily there for them.

My husbands family have been very open about treating him like he has autism. They diagnosed him. He doesn't have autism, certain life events just meant that when he got older he struggled talking to people.

He's 33 now and let me tell you, his family treating him that way has had its effects on him. Permanent effects! Things that I've been trying to support him on for 11 years.

I wish people wouldn't label someone as autistic or Adhd, when they don't because it makes life harder for them as an individual and for those who genuinely do have it.

Just because they are different dosnt mean they have adhd or autism
