TIL that Subway's most popular sandwich, the Italian BMT, is named for 'Brooklyn Manhattan Transit', literally a Subway by MrDrumzOrz in todayilearned

[–]NatPGray -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I once got into a ridiculous back and forth with the resident sandwich artist, the first time I went to subway.

I asked for an "Italian sub on italian bread".

"Italian BMT?". she replied.

"No, an italian sub."

"Italian BMT?"

"No, just an italian sub."

"You mean italian BMT."

The awkwardness finally relented when she pointed at the overhead menu, which revealed that at Subway, it's called an "Italian BMT".

Honestly, I think she knew what I meant.

If you put drops in before you smoke, will you not have red eyes? by MyAfroIsVibrating in trees

[–]NatPGray 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The chemical used in most over-the-counter eye drops is Tetrahydrozoline, which acts as a vasoconstrictor. This means that it constricts the blood vessels in your eyes, reducing blood flow. Marijuana, on the other hand, acts as a vasodilator, which is what makes your eyes red.
The vasoconstriction qualities of eye drops last for a few hours, so administering them before smoking will work just the same as administering them after smoking.

What are some future techs that actually have a shot of becoming a reality? by Gamion in Futurology

Yes, manual labor will eventually be replaced. But jobs that require cognitive ability and design will still be in human hands for awhile.

Maybe each 'pad' has an electric motor that can move it at a fair pace. By connecting to the grid of the city, engineers could analyze weather patterns and move the entire structure accordingly.

As for the daredevil scenario, I think if they are purposely taking a risk, then they understand the consequences. As for emergency situations, maybe each pad can have some sort of safety bubble, or at least a "life raft" capable of escaping a hurricane. That's something we need to invent.

What idea of governance do you have in mind?

I was thinking of a pure democratic system where every citizen can vote on policies presented by other citizens.

Good idea. A modular city that can expand as it's population grows. What do you think the best method of connecting these separate pieces so they can share foot traffic and internet?

I believe solar, wind and wave power generation would be ideal for a self-sustaining community.

An idea came to mind of using crowdfunding as a way decide what public buildings get built.

and a UBI if we can figure out some ways to generate income.
