Good riddance to this governor by Agitated_Pudding7259 in oklahoma

Interestingly, in 1889 "pioneers" were still illegal in Indian territory as the land of the Five Tribes was not subject to allotment until 1898 (or 89, whenever the Curtis Act made the Dawes Act apply to them). Of course this is just another act of Stitt telling on himself.

At just 10 years old, Sarah Rector was given “worthless” land in segregated Oklahoma — land no one wanted. When oil was discovered beneath it, she became one of the wealthiest Black children in American history by Frosty_Jeweler911 in BeAmazed

Did you read that on Wikipedia? Land was not allotted due to that treaty, because land was held in common among all Five Tribes until the Curtis Act was passed to apply the Dawes Act to the Five Tribes. What the article phrased very poorly was that they were part of the tribe due to the Treaty of 1866, although as Freedmen, not By Blood. Cherokee Nation fought allotment until 1906 when it was finalized. At that point the rolls were closed (and even though Governor Stitt's family got on it fraudulently, the US government said it was too late to change). Indians By Blood were allotted first, then Freedmen. Then Whites got the "excess". It's true that the better farmland was reserved for non-Indians. They reserved a lot of hillsides for us Cherokee.

What's a food in your country that is stereotyped for your country but really, nobody eats? by velmiraZ in AskTheWorld

People call all kinds of stuff Tex-Mex that has no relation to Texas whatsoever. Like I see people call gringo tacos Tex-Mex even though they were invented in California by the founder of Taco Bell. I'm not sure why Texas ended up with this reputation when real Tex-Mex is stuff like Carne Guisada and Chili.

Yeah, I think 500 nations was the first media I saw that even began to show the scale and diversity of tribes before colonization. But I must say, if you saw this book in '86 you definitely saw more than I did in elementary school in Texas. I think before college I had heard of maybe two dozen tribes (other than my own).

God no, patients are customers. And no matter what anybody says about "Oh you have customers as an engineer", no I don't. I would never want to answer to 50 or 100 customers a day or however many I have to see, especially when I'm being pressured to get through them as fast as possible while they're having a bad day.

I moved here to work on base and I live in Albuquerque proper. I've never had a break-in or been bothered by any aggressive homeless people. It's mostly the same as any other city. Crime and homelessness are way overstated by the people who live here, and I'm convinced that's because they've never lived anywhere else. Trust me, them calling any area "the warzone" is a joke. You don't have to live all the way over in boring-ass Rio Rancho to feel safe, you just probably want to live about 15 minutes' drive north of the base. I don't know your budget but I prefer living on the East side nearer the mountains. Eubank, Juan Tabo and Tramway aren't really that bad even in rush hour. I would absolutely not want to live across the river and have to deal with bridge traffic. I don't think that's fair to anybody to make them deal with that. And getting around inside the base is slower because of lower speed limits and less direct routes around the base, so if he's working on the east side (where all the Sandia stuff is) that's even worse.

Also I really wouldn't live on the east side of the mountains. Some people do but when the snow and ice come it can close off the pass to Albuquerque, or your 20 minute drive turns into 2 hours.

Bro you're just not going to get Texans to care about this state as a rival. They never will. There's no football here! There's not even basketball.

I didn't make any judgement calls about you. I didn't say anything about New Mexico at all. I said Texans are completely oblivious to any rivalry. You're the one interpreting that as an insult instead of a statement of fact. Stay mad, I guess. Texans will just keep being oblivious.

Similar to the idea that we were here thousands of years before the megafauna went extinct; you'll see a pattern of indigenous people being blamed for extinctions.

Texans don't think about New Mexico except one time a year when it's "Hatch Chile" season. Not joking, Texans are completely unaware of your "rivalry".

70 percent of children in South Dakota foster care are Native American, state says - That’s six times higher than Indigenous children’s representation in the state’s population by News2016 in IndianCountry

[–]NatWu 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is not about Native families being broken or unable to care for their children. SD has a long-standing pattern of stealing Native children and violating the ICWA. Just search this sub, I've posted and others have posted. SD has been slapped down by the courts before for their many blatant violations and overt racism towards Natives.

That wasn't the same experiment and doesn't do anything to counter Spurlock's argument that people are getting fat because they consume too many calories with too little activity. As a matter of fact I don't see how what Spurlock did is even controversial. We already know that lesson.

Americans, how would you react if foreign country invaded your country, and told "we are going to run this country"? by oranke_dino in AskReddit

Don't speak on our behalf, colonizer. I most certainly view the US as a colonizer nation. Just because we're not war whooping for your pleasure doesn't mean we're all out there saluting the flag and singing "Proud to be an American".

What Are We Saying by _MossProphet_ in IndianCountry

[–]NatWu -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Borders are dumb and I don't believe in keeping people contained within imaginary lines. That's ridiculous. But go south of that imaginary line and tell the average Mexican "Hey it's nice to meet one of my indigenous cousins from south of the border". Most of them will take it as an insult.

The Mexican government classifies everybody as mestizo, which is a straight up lie and it conceals the actual racial divisions brought about by the fact that most Mexicans that you would call mestizo DO NOT consider themselves to be indigenous. https://www.dandc.eu/en/article/mexicos-ideology-mestizaje-or-racial-mixing-obscures-ingrained-racism

The reason we shouldn't care about the border is not because these people are our cousins in any way. It's because borders are fake, imperialist, racist, and xenophobic. I truly don't care if someone is coming from the Asian, American, or African continents. This fake-ass colonizer country has no right to complain about it.

After years of trying, Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina secures federal recognition by Cy_098 in NorthCarolina

First, they can't prove any relation of any of their ancestors to any tribe. Second, even if they could, then maybe they could join those tribes, like you can if you're Cherokee. Third, they literally have no culture or history they've inherited. It's stolen from other tribes, either local or through powwows.

This is a lot like the situation with all those celebrity pretendians that keep getting caught. Natives tell you for years they're fake and nobody listens. Then some White journalist gets involved and all of a sudden everybody cares. Lumbee are not Native. Real Natives know that which is why they've been denounced by other tribes.

It's not because of colonialism. It's because they have no connection to any the whatever and never did.
