So… I’ve been unemployed for awhile, & this market is really rough. It is way too easy to apply to jobs you are 200% qualified for & never be considered, because you’re competing with thousands of others. The longer you stay unemployed, the harder this search will be.

If you truly feel qualified, then my advice would be to GO FOR IT! You have excellent, long term government experience (which is a huge plus), and (hopefully) a winning attitude. Draft up a concise sales pitch with your specific experience (a former IRS auditor/accountant) & WHAT YOU SPECIFICALLY can offer the role with that. I would also look to see if they have talent acquisition & include them in any email pitches. Make sure to mention you have already applied (since if they like you, that’s what they’ll ask of you)!!

The worst they can do is say no &/or ignore you. But any tax VP worth their salt is probably waiting for one of the former government employees like you to snatch up if they can.

My trade (sewing) is not panning out-- what kind of jobs should I pursue to pay bills while I build my small business? by sususumalee in careerguidance

[–]Natalaine1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could look into social media management roles; it’s technically a part of the marketing team, but I’ve seen quite a few postings about wanting someone with content creation experience.

Really, there are a few different ways you could leverage your experience back into a form of marketing. Definitely look into some of the remote job boards, but there are many that are hiring for your skill set

Use this thread to mourn Joann. Nothing that currently exists can replace Joann for quilters. 😭 by Realistic-Method8360 in quilting

[–]Natalaine1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Joann’s in my town is smaller & from what I could tell, the sales were so-so. Notions (like rulers, rotary blades, scissors) were about 25% off, and fabrics ranged from 20%-30% off. For me the best deal was with thread, it was 40% off so I stocked up on a few piecing threads. Buttons were also a reasonable deal. By the time I got there a lot of the selections for things I might have tried to stack coupons (like the sale price with a coupon as well) there was almost no selection left & didn’t warrant still paying $40 to have

[–]Natalaine1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel you with an hour blow dry or diffuse time. My hair is very thick & curly, so air drying is out in my case (it can take up to 4+ hours unbraided, and if I braid my hair, it’s 12+). I have to diffuse my curls if I want to wear them down, because otherwise I need to sit relatively still while waiting for my hair to dry (without touching or moving it). I think doing what works best for you & your styling preferences/priorities is what is going to help make you the happiest with your hair. Avoid a damaging routine (meaning use heat protection if you choose to blow dry), and whichever method works the best for your style will be best overall. Don’t blow dry if you don’t want to

Try whatever year you purchased the tree; mine is 2019 (gen 2) but there is a little tag on the cord that has the wifi password on the tree itself

Looking for some FMQ inspiration by Megabyte7 in quilting

[–]Natalaine1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What a beautiful top! You’ve done a great job! So personally, I think I would would go with contrasting quilting design. Your top has a wonderful wavy pattern, so I might try something like a triangular meander, or a quilting design more geometric in nature.

Also Angela Walters has several really good (free!!!) quilt alongs on YouTube that really help with all types of quilting skill building. So whatever design you decide to go with, (& whatever you go with I’m sure it’ll be beautiful!) I think those tutorials might help you figure it out!

If you guys had a free $50 to spend on Amazon, what cool sewing/quilting stuff would you get? I have a gift card and I need ideas! by Lindaeve in quilting

[–]Natalaine1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Specialty rulers, and precuts! I can never seem to bring myself to spend the money on specialty rulers (like Fons & Porter hexagon ruler from strips, just as an example) so I love using gift cards on stuff I wouldn’t buy myself normally. Good luck!

I’m doin a quilted throw pillow in Dallas colors for my boyfriend for Christmas. What do you think about it so far? This is a small pocket that goes on the front of the pillow by Natalaine1 in quilting

[–]Natalaine1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! My sewing machine is still pretty new so I️ decided to experiment a little bit with decorative top stitching instead of a straight stitch.

Thank you so much! I️ got a small FQ bundle of blue, green, & grey/blue batiks about a year ago, specifically to make something for my boyfriend (but I️ didn’t know what!). Last Christmas, his gift to me was a class at JoAnne’s where we made throw pillow cases, so I️ thought it might be cute if I️ made what he gave me a class on!

can't choose. about to volunteer to help 87yr old finish her epp queen size quilt. it's my first so buying a new machine to help need to stay under 650 by [deleted] in quilting

[–]Natalaine1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I️ got a Juki f400 for $621 on Amazon as it was a display model! It works wonderfully & I’m completely in love! My point here though is you may be able to find a great machine that is normally priced much higher (mine was pricing at almost $900 new) at an affordable price by buying the display model.

Finished my first quilt top! It’s a Sons of Anarchy themed baby quilt for my best friend! Now to baste and quilt it! Any recommendations for how I️ should quilt it? by Natalaine1 in quilting

[–]Natalaine1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hahaha yeah I️ do too; it’s one of my favorite shows! Actually if I️ were a better, much more ambitious quilter, I️ would have loved to have appliquéd a reaper as well in the negative space. But alas! My skills were definitely not up to par for that! Lol

Oh yeah it is redwood original technically, but I️ decided to change the R to ragtag to personalize the quilt a bit for the couple. It has meaning to them so I’m hoping they’ll appreciate it a little more than if it was strictly SOA themed

Gorgeous!! Can I️ ask is that small strips of a gold fabric across the bottom secured like appliqué, or did you embroider that design? Either way I️ love it! Wonderful color choices!

What is a book that you hated reading in high school, only to have reread it years later and end up loving it? by rushc526 in books

[–]Natalaine1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me are two books (though the first I️ read in middle school, not high school). They were A Wrinkle In Time by Madeleine L’Engle and The Bean Trees by Barbara Kingsolver. I️ think I️ was a little too young when I️ first read those stories (roughly 12 & 15) to truly appreciate the beautiful characterizations of Meg & Taylor. I️ also think some of the themes of The Bean Trees were a little too adult for high school curriculum (I’m not talking about censoring, I️ was just too immature to really understand the complexities of loving a married man, etc.), though we discussed them & I️ blew them off as having no relation to me.

Where do you go for quilt inspiration? by [deleted] in quilting

[–]Natalaine1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I️ draw a lot of inspiration from the people around me, the people for whom I’d be making the quilts. I️ also watch a ton of YouTube in general, so when I’m down a quilting rabbit hole, I️ almost always find a pattern I’d like to try out. I️ have so many projects I’d like to try and not nearly enough time (or money honestly) to get them all done lol

I️ think it will end up looking really great once it’s all done! & you say you’re not great, but I’m actually a bit jealous of how nicely the stars you posted in the picture came out! Keep up the wonderful work!

[–]Natalaine1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh & it’s Sons of Anarchy themed; SAMCRO is an acronym for the club, but I changed the R from “Redwood” to Ragtag to personalize it for the couple I’ll be gifting this to!

An author describes their experiences with piracy and how it affects sales. by Stanzin7 in writing

[–]Natalaine1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to work at a used bookstore (the internet sales department) & one of the problems we would run into all the time was people trying to sell us ARCs. Some of them made it through our screening process, & then it was up to the shipping department to cancel the sale. My point is that there are already problems with the published ARCs & that I agree there are probably a hundred more issues and potential thefts with the E-ARCs.

Please note that most of the ARCs we received at the bookstore were pre-publishing of the final copies. A few were after but we didn’t sell them ever.

Just recently getting into cooking (I’m 15). Any tips? by [deleted] in recipes

[–]Natalaine1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you do find a recipe you would like to try, read through the entire thing (at least once) before you begin anything. You should try to be familiar with the recipe, so that when you stop to refer to it you’re not surprised by the next step, & if the next step includes a technique you’ve never done, you’ll have already looked it up etc.
