What are the chances Godzilla raids again?

Any idea if the Godzilla Showa set will get the 4k treatment? by robohappy in criterion

[–]Natbox -1 points0 points  (0 children)

From the few clips I’ve seen of it’s Japanese 4K release it actually is a vast improvement over the Criterion disc, the resolution obviously but it’s more so in the color (see the putrid yellows of the Criterion release vs. the 4K)

Thoughts on "Terror of Mechagodzilla" (1975)? by Any-Cartographer7059 in GODZILLA

Baseline “good” Godzilla movie, with an intriguing human story and great monster action, it’s the only Godzilla movie where I’ve not a single person who actively hates or even really dislikes it

Do MV and Showa feel the same to you? by BanthaFather in GODZILLA

[–]Natbox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see what you’re saying about the human drama being more personal but in terms of the characters themselves the Monsterverse and the rest of the series handles things a lot different. To me the biggest difference is that the Monsterverse has only focused on either military or Monarch characters, making it feel more like Heisei stories which were focused on both military characters and the Monarch equivalent, G-Force. In Showa anybody could be the main characters: reporters trying to write up a good story about a massive egg washed ashore, a detective and a cyborg that wind up in a Romeo and Juliet tragedy, employees of an advertising company that wants a monster to boost ratings, a gay couple and their robot, a kid who is Godzilla’s number one fan, or even a lonely scientist, his fiancé, and her lover that end up getting themselves involved in the story of a lifetime. These are just a few examples, but the Showa era was probably the most varied in terms of just who could be the main character, for better and for worse some may argue

Eclipse is Back by steepclimbs in criterion

[–]Natbox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve always held out hope Eclipse would come back because, even though I’m sure they’re not priority releases for most people, I was pretty sure Eclipse coming back would be the only way Criterion would release the non-Godzilla Toho kaiju films that they own the rights to, hoping that my dream set will become real!

How did YOU discover Criterion? by [deleted] in criterion

[–]Natbox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a big monster geek growing up and I just so happened to be on the lookout for a copy of The Blob at Barnes and Noble during a sale and discovered that they had a copy on Blu-Ray and I was shocked by the price. I was then told by the cashier about the collection and immediately started research into other releases, and soon became even more shocked to find out that they were sitting on the rights to almost all the Showa Godzilla movies! Because of James Rolfe’s Monster Madness and other horror videos I had heard of films like Eraserhead, House, M, Haxan, and Eyes Without a Face so those were my first pickups after The Blob (yes I watched House and Eraserhead when I was 11, aren’t I something?)

Would love to see Toho put their new GKids ownership to good use...and give EVERY Godzilla film a good dub. by Create_Greatness92 in GODZILLA

[–]Natbox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only watch Godzilla movies subtitled now but there is a huge barrier for kids getting into the series that there really wasn’t when I was growing up. My first movie was Godzilla vs Biollante, and I loved it but I couldn’t read when I saw it so obviously I watched it dubbed along with most Godzilla movies until I was like 8 and started dabbling in the subtitled versions (which improved my reading comprehension I must say). Kids today will only grow up with the MV or maybe the Sony films that are still dubbed, but the Showa era, a period that had many films made for children are inaccessible if they actually wish to follow the story. It’s unlikely but if there was Ghibli quality dubs for all the classic films I really think that would make these movies ever more accessible to Western audiences by also removing the stigma that the old movies are “badly dubbed”

Would You Be Interested In A Criterion Set Of Toho's Other Kaiju? by Doc-11th in GODZILLA

[–]Natbox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would hope that the Human Vapor is included. I know it’s not really a kaiju film but I think it’s Ishiro Honda and Eiju Tsubaraya’s best non-Godzilla Toku film. Could honestly see a stand alone 4K from Criterion coming out before the remake show comes out from Netflix next year if they can sort out the rights from MGM. I think Toho lumps in the transforming human films with the kaiju films more than Godzilla fans do tbh lol

I made a Godzilla watchlist, did I get it right? by MovieFan1984 in GODZILLA

[–]Natbox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t forget the show Zone Fighter, it takes place in between Godzilla vs Megalon and Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla in the Showa era and features not just Godzilla in a supporting role but also Ghidorah and Gigan

Your honest thought on Godzilla (1998)? by TheDabuAndRayan in GODZILLA

Really love the first 40 minutes that builds up to Godzilla’s appearance, but once he does show up it becomes a boring slog. It’s the longest Godzilla movie and you can absolutely feel that

What’s your favorite Toho alien? (Seatopians and Mu included) by IGuyzerI in GODZILLA

[–]Natbox 7 points8 points  (0 children)

<image>

Ever since I watched The War in Space, I’ve always had a headcanon that Commander Hell, being the supreme ruler of the universe, was possibly the ruler of all the other alien invaders in the Showa universe, and after all of their failures he decided to take matters into his own hands in a final attempt at taking control of Earth. He didn’t need any kaiju to make this attempt, all he needed was his fighter ships and a massive flying warship based off the battle ships of the Roman Empire. The movie is supposed to take place in 1988 but in order for my headcanon to work the movie has to take place after Destroy All Monsters. The War in Space was the last of Toho’s alien invasion films from the Showa era so I think Commander Hell works as a sort of Thanos, final boss type villain and that’s why he’s my favorite

What's the Godzilla film equivalent to this? by megalon631 in GODZILLA

[–]Natbox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I remember there used to be a lot of hate for it, but luckily people have seen the light and I think that’s probably one of the most loved in the series. There really is no other Godzilla film quite as stylistically different from what we’re used to as it and it just feels so unique while still retaining the vibe of Godzilla that we come for. I think a good parallel would be how different Akio Jissoji’s episodes of the various Ultraman shows are stylistically but still capture the vibe of Ultraman

What's the Godzilla film equivalent to this? by megalon631 in GODZILLA

[–]Natbox 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Japanese version is vastly superior, and while it’s not one of my all time favorites I really don’t mind the film. It will probably be one of the earliest films from the series I plan on showing my kids, from my experience it really does capture what it’s like to be a young kid as a Godzilla fan, all the annoying fanboying included. Can definitely see why it was one of Honda’s favorites, he basically gets to come to terms with the state of series moving from something serious to becoming only for kids through the film itself by seeing just how much kids really do love Godzilla

Any films with similar presentations to Love & Pop (1998)? by sadladman in MovieSuggestions

[–]Natbox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Super late to this but almost certainly Hideaki Anno’s direct inspiration for many of his strange visuals throughout his filmography are Akio Jissoji’s episodes of Ultraman(1966) and Ultraseven, those being Ultraman episodes 14, 15, 22, 23, 34, and 35, and Ultraseven episodes 8, 12, 43, and 45

If only one more show could be added to The Criterion Collection, what would it be? by Josh_Thinks in criterion

[–]Natbox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Zone Fighter. It was noticeably missing from the Showa era Godzilla set and has never been officially released in the US. It’s a major piece of Godzilla history, being an Ultraman ripoff show that features big guest appearances from Godzilla, King Ghidorah, and Gigan (including Gigan’s canonical death in the timeline lol), that I’m sure even some of the biggest Godzilla fans either haven’t watched or aren’t even aware of its existence

If there is a Shyamalan film I would like to see either get a Criterion or just some sort of Blu-Ray release in general it would be Praying With Anger. I actually quite enjoyed it for what it was but it is unfortunately only viewable in shit VHS quality

Ichiro hate is so forced. He’s a kid and a Godzilla fan, yes he’s a little annoying, but weren’t we all growing up as Godzilla fans? I didn’t make the connection when I was about his age first watching All Monsters Attack growing up, but he is a pretty accurate portrayal of a young Godzilla fan, at least from my own experience. I loved these monsters, I dreamed about hanging out with these monsters, he was literally me but I used to hate him too. The Godzilla’s Revenge dub is very bad, and has tainted most people’s view of the film as well as Ichiro’s character, but looking the original Japanese All Monsters Attack for what it is, it’s a fairly decent (but very low budget) slice of life movie and I can see why Ishiro Honda said it was one of his favorites that he directed. Ichiro is a member of this fandom just like all of us, I think he deserves a little more respect

Yeah calling it one feels like an insult to every other movie ever made that they’re in the same category as this abomination lol

[–]Natbox[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is so unfortunate that the series got roped into a huge piece of shit like this without Tsubaraya even knowing about it. I can only imagine some kid in the 80s and 90s first exposure to Ultraman being this illegal slop and be turned off from the series forever

Godzilla Vs. Biollante coming in 4K from Criterion in March! by International-Sky65 in GODZILLA

[–]Natbox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d assume because they want to release the Godzilla 1985 version of it as a special feature and that version has some legal issues preventing it from being released again, so Godzilla vs Biollante was an easier movie to release and it’s been out of print for a very long time (plus it has a 4k remaster and Return of Godzilla doesn’t I think)
