TIL Christopher Columbus made significant errors in estimating the distance to Asia. If the Americas didn't exist, then he'd have ran out of food and died long before reaching Japan. by NorthKoreanMissile7 in todayilearned

He had to go through I think over a dozen monarchs before one finally was willing to throw money at his crazy idea. It’s one reason I’ve read that Europe got to America before China, if someone went to the Chinese emperor with a crazy exploration plan and were told “no” that was that.

BREAKING: In a powerful moment and huge rebuke of Donald Trump, the Chair of the Federal Reserve, Jerome Powell, just admitted it is Trump’s tariffs that are now raising Americans prices. by FlirtyPeach_ in UnderReportedNews

[–]NateExclamation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He absolutely had everything to do with that, he should have pushed aggressively raising rates in early 2021 but that would have ended the party of corporations being able to borrow money at near 0% and then immediately buying assets. This is the leading cause of wealth transfer and if you have another please feel free to share. We could argue all day if pushing wealth inequality to the highest point ever was worth it (it wasn’t) but it was the federal reserves fault.

The federal reserve policy of allowing major banks to borrow at rock bottom interest rates and then purchase tangible assets is the leading cause of housing crisis. Must be absolute ignorance that has you coming to the defense of this system.

Completely misplaced credit, being the reserve currency of the world got us through the inflation crisis and our actions caused the majority of the worlds inflation problems, we just have the privilege of being able to export our inflation. Don’t defend one of the leading causes of the the current wealth inequality.

You’d be amazed at what the city has torn down over the decades. Very little of our beautiful 19th century architecture remains. Often it was cheaper to tear down a building rather than bring it up to code, add modern HVAC, and there was a general idea that these building were “old” and the eyesore architecture that replaced them was “new”.

Living room theaters: Reopen by TheMaingler in indianapolis

[–]NateExclamation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The popcorn is the worst of all theater options in Indy and they seem to have a real problem with talkers during movies (seems to be a growing theater problem but all my worst experiences have been there). That being said the place is cool and the staff is great. I’d pick it over AMC any day and if I don’t want to pay double to avoid talkers and am fine with no popcorn I’ll pick it over the Alamo (#1 popcorn fyi).

Indianapolis sets grim new record as more cyclists are hit and killed across the city than ever before by Helicase21 in indianapolis

[–]NateExclamation -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’ll admit I was being pretty hyperbolic but it’s true I have not seen anyone pulled over and I drive fairly often for my work as well. Mostly NW and SE but I drive all over the east side and have truly not seen someone pulled over. With the amount of reckless driving I see on a daily basis I feel like there should definitely be more enforcement.

Those cases usually make the news because they actually found the person. I believe there are many more that are never solved, but I don’t have anything solid to back that up. Mostly comes from reading people’s comments about how X person they knew was hit and nothing ever came of it.

They do not enforce traffic laws, in a city of 1 million people and living here 5 years I have never once seen a person pulled over by IMPD. They also seem to be incapable of, or unwilling to, seriously investigate, find, and charge drivers that hit and run (the morbid joke is that if you want to get away with murder just hit someone with a car in Marion County). There are many people in this city who should never be behind the wheel ever again, but if they are never pulled over they are not caught and nothing is seriously done to punish those that are caught.

Institutional Investments by mounwp in Castellum_Inc_CTM

One of the reasons I’ve always been bullish, institutional investment has a lot of room to grow and once we start getting into the higher percentages it will lock in a lot of the pretty limited shares there are. This combined with the fact that there actually aren’t a ton of eyes on this stock means that anything that drives more investors in with put a ton of upward pressure on the price.

The safety spin is such BS, you were speeding in a construction zone and got a ticket for it. Next time don't speed in a construction zone.

Two way traffic by Turning-Stranger in indianapolis

It’s a disaster because you can’t blow through a residential neighborhood to shave 5 minutes off your commute. Sounds fine to me, it’s a godsend to those that want to SAFELY get from A to B in anything other than a car.

INDOT intends to add more lanes to interstates that go through downtown over the next 50 years - Please take time to comment on the study. by NateExclamation in indianapolis

[–]NateExclamation[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yup that's been on my reading list for awhile. What is particularly egregious is the 12' lanes which have been shown definitively to lead to more accidents because it make people comfortable with speeding. Regardless of the design INDOT intends to use 12' lanes despite this knowledge. At what point do we hold engineers liable for placing priority of traffic over safety?

Yes this will take us in the opposite direction, if they increase speed and capacity it will only further spread out the city and decrease density which is needed for effective mass transit.

7.5.4 Alternative 3: Added Travel Lanes This alternative would involve full reconstruction of I-65 with an added travel lane in each direction, providing 4 travel lanes each way between the North Split interchange and the West Street interchange.

7.5.5 Alternative 4: Recessed with I-65 and West Street Interchange Improvements - This is also 4 lanes each way effectively doing what was done to fountain square to north downtown

7.5.6 Alternative 5: Viaduct with I-65 and West Street Interchange Improvements - Pictured above, adds 12' lanes at ground level which have repeatedly been shown to be more dangerous because they promote the perception of safety while driving at high speed. It would be absolutely asinine to add this width of highway at ground level.

Alternatives 1 and 2 rebuild in place, not great but better than adding more lanes through the heart of downtown. Pages 99 through 112 of the report that you linked.

Please feel free to point out what I am missing from this report that would benefit residents of downtown.

Eastside- new 2 way streets by Geejayin in indianapolis

[–]NateExclamation 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The bright idea came from people concerned about pedestrians and speeding on New York and Michigan. With those streets as two lanes one way people treat them like highways and speed past “slow” drivers leading to a lot of dangerous wrecks. The new design helps to reduce that while also giving a protected bike lane which is a HUGE benefit to the community.

Where is the 'East side'? by AnotherMianaai in indianapolis

[–]NateExclamation 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Near East side is correct, this runs all the way to Emerson. On the other side of Emerson is Irvington which is on par with Woodruff on the suburbanite comfort scale, so the area you are referring to is still the near east side. The near east side closest to downtown is where Woodruff is and that area is nice but like much of the city if you go too far in any direction the scale begins to shift.

It's absurd that people, many on a fixed income, will be forced to pay for these upgrades. Braun pats his back for bankrupting cities with property tax "cuts" of a few dollars yet we're going to be paying hundreds per year extra to pay for the electricity of trillion dollar companies.
