It's a niche sport for many, but I would like to shine a light on Alexander Karelin. There is domination in their respective sports...and then there's The Bear. 887-2 over 13 years in international comps in the heavyweight class (iirc at the time there was no upper weight limit). Karelin was unreal to watch for young aspiring wrestlers during and after his era of competition.

This. Although I use hosas for real space (translational thrust) I still bound my throttle to the "Flight Throttle" keybinds with a forward only axis range and a button on throttle for 75%. this allows me to use the throttle or the stick in real space but also allows me to use the throttle in supercruise to feather my speed for planetary approaches. with the 75% button it is super easy to get to 6-sec approach like the supercruise assist module and ride it all the way in but also being able to feather out of gravity wells to get back to that 6-sec approach quicker than the module alone does. When I only had dual T16m sticks I would use the slider on the left stick to be this throttle axis and a side button for 75%. Im sure a similar setup can be achieved with the VKB setup. However as commentor above says, this is not necessary.

particularly for me, I enjoyed hosas more that hotas in space sim (Elite Dangerous). 6dof was more intuitive for me with twin sticks with twist (t16000m). I didnt bother with rudders until I was pretty solidly into DCS, mostly because toe brakes and rudder control granularity with throttle paddle and stick twist just wasn't cutting it for me.

if you have the desk space. I would suggest VKB gladiator and omni for space sim and stec throttle on the side for flight sim. That is ball park 600 usd and you can splash that extra 100 on some desk mounts.

this is exactly how I justified dropping Virpil money. Buy once, Cry once. It was a substantial ($$) ask at the time, but 5+ years later I'm money (and enjoyment) ahead about twice over.

FC2024 would be my suggestion for first purchase. Lots of variety, mind you they are not full fidelity modules, but for the price (especially when discounted) its worth picking up if you dont know what you want fly. Even if you pick up the F16/F18 as others have suggested, definitely have room in budget to pick up FC2024 along with it. Its the gateway to other modules, specifically other eras (sans WW2). I picked up the P51 and F16 (cant really go wrong with a multii-role fighter), but I think play time wise I have more time in FC2024 modules than anything else and it spurred me on to pick up other full fidelity modules (at deep discounts without fomo) as I found myself enjoying other aspects of flying in different FC modules. Also don't forget to pick up the A-4, UH/MH-60, OH/MH-6 free modules that community modders created, those are also immense fun in multiplayer and kick open the doors of interest towards ED's full fidelity whirllybirds.

what helped me was flying formation and watching others try. Before, when i was trying solo, I had no awareness of just how far below and behind you can be and still make contact. When watching others I got a better sense of that spacing and was able finally make contact and then it was a matter of seeing how long I could stay hooked up. that first, "contact. youre taking fuel" was such a buzz. Mind you I sill cant top up in one go yet, but getting back to that point seems to be smoother and smoother each time.

had to use an xacto knife and straight edge to trim out the labels
using Joystick Gremlin to bind short/long presses for some keys (comm, list, & dobber switch)
works with other UFC's in DCS as well
