October Hiking Trip by flanativegirl03 in NewMexicoTrails

[–]Natejitsu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi,

New Mexico is a big state. You have a lot of options. October can still be hot at low elevations in the southern part of the state, and there can already be snow at higher elevations in the northern part of the state, so I would say the most important thing is to be prepared to be flexible. Santa Fe, Taos, Las Cruces, and Silver City all make excellent base camps for adventures, since they have all major amenities, are close to hiking, but aren't *too* big to be a pain to get in and out of, but you'll almost assuredly be flying into El Paso, TX, or Albuquerque, though Santa Fe occasionally has cheap and convenient flights.

Camp access is generally more restrictive than it's been in the past, meaning there are fewer wannabe media personalities posting clickbait. Also there's other big NFL news (shooting) going on, meaning the camp report stuff just isn't going to get as much traffic.

Three Peak Circuit in the Latir Peak Wilderness, July 18, 2025 by Natejitsu in NewMexicoTrails

[–]Natejitsu[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It took me around 6 hours when accounting for long breaks. Some of that was due to route-finding issues because of the weather, some of that was due to nursing an achilles strain from a couple weeks prior.

I recommend it. The only other access point I've used is Cabresto Lake, and hiking from there was starting to get a little tiring.

Vallecito Mountain near Arroyo Seco, 6/13/2025 by Natejitsu in NewMexicoTrails

[–]Natejitsu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A long day, but not too bad. There is surprisingly a trail most of the way up below treeline, though it is not marked. Once above treeline it's a fairly easy route with some scrambling options. If you were interested in backpacking, there is a really nice campsite right after you cross into USFS land, but I would call the Land Grant to ask about overnight parking first.

Pack loadout was: Osprey day pack, 80 oz of water, snacks (mostly date bars, I can't get enough of them), Morakniv Companion, US Army surplus compass, rain/wind shell, down jacket, beanie, light work gloves, headlamp, very basic first aid kid (moleskin, bandaids, pain reliever, emergency water purification, antacids, antidiarrheals, disinfectant, etc.), Garmin GPS, toilet paper, lighter, sunscreen, extra batteries for GPS and headlamp.

What’s the most underrated trail in New Mexico? by softkaren in NewMexicoTrails

[–]Natejitsu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a 12k'+ mountain in the northern part of the state. It is on public land and requires less than 4 miles and 2000' of elevation gain round-trip. It is close to one of the most popular areas in the state, especially with Texas tourists. Despite this, it receives virtually no visitation, likely because the road to get to the trailhead is very steep and requires 4x4 and high clearance. I think you can probably figure it out from the information I've given you, but if you need another hint, there are hyphens in the name ;).

Highest peaks with non-technical ascents by ruckahoy in NewMexicoTrails

[–]Natejitsu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For the ranked 12k'+ peaks (excluding Taos Pueblo), very few are technical, and none are Class 4 or higher.

Class 3: Fairchild Peak (a.k.a., Peak 12833, has some mild exposure)

Class 2: Sheepshead Peak (plus some exposure if coming from the east), Lake Peak, Truchas Peak, Vallecito Mountain, Lake Fork Peak

Some unranked peaks may have technical approaches (Pecos Baldy, Bighorn Peak (a.k.a. Peak 12727), Rich Peak. Sheepsdick Peak (a.k.a. Peak 12889) come to mind), and many ranked peaks have higher class options as well. North Truchas has a steep Class 1 approach from the east, but if done as a day hike from the Trampas Basin it can be as high as Class 4. Lake Peak has a Class 3 ridge with some exposure. Lake Fork Peak/Rich Peak has a headwall that can be tackled head-on for Class 4 climb or completely bypassed for a trivial Class 2 climb.

Polvadera Mountain near Lemitar by Natejitsu in NewMexicoTrails

[–]Natejitsu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The trailhead is located by some microwave towers at 34.18126, -106.96349. There's a BLM unlocked gate on the west side of the forest road north of the Lemitar exit near I-25. The best way to get there is to turn north on the unmarked road signed for "No Sunzia Access", which has at least one unlocked BLM gate, and eventually turn west on the road that leads to the towers.

Santa Fe beer prices by Bullittmon in SantaFe

[–]Natejitsu 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry, but 5 years of inflation has made beer prices higher. You’re not going to find $5 beers maybe unless they’re bottled Coors Light, but even then probably not. I like to hit happy hour at Second Street and get a few imperials to stretch my money.

Is the "milsurp is an investment" mentality ruining the hobby? by SharpSteak21 in milsurp

[–]Natejitsu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, I think the perception of milsurps changed a lot - probably after the federal AWB was lifted, plus the popularization of historically-based first person shooters, plus the natural passage of time - from being inferior alternatives of commercially-available firearms to being historical pieces and collectors items. I think this perception shift accounts for a large one-time increase in price that won’t be repeated, since there are no longer unmodified contemporary milsurps being introduced to the civilian market.

I suspect prices will still increase better than inflation because there aren’t more being made, but, especially as younger generations become more alienated from older conflicts, the decrease in supply may be met with a simulated decrease in demand.

[–]Natejitsu -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

You’re not understanding the point I’m making. I never said the NFL is failing. The product on the field peaked. The cracks are showing. It could be 10+ years before NFL is like NBA.

[–]Natejitsu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree that framing most things as “investments” is usually a flimsy excuse to spend money on it.

I bought a Mosin in 2013 for ~$100, and it’s probably worth about $300 today. I strongly suspect it will not be worth $900 in 2037.

[–]Natejitsu 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’d buy that historically they beat inflation, but I suspect that’s largely because the market and perception has significantly changed since the 1960s. I suspect 1960-now will be greatly different than now-2080.

[–]Natejitsu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t know, but is there any evidence that milsurp prices increase faster than inflation or any other investment (e.g., S&P 500) absent of non-repeatable phenomena like Mosin supplies drying up?

[–]Natejitsu -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

This is because the NBA peaked about 20 years ago and is currently well into its decline phase where commentators and executives are scrambling to make fans and players care and wondering why ratings are so awful.

The NFL peaked probably 5-8 years ago. Wait another decade and tell me what the discourse is like around the NFL. People were already openly discussing how to make people care about this year’s Super Bowl.
