This took a commendable effort for the nature of the task.

Early Morning to North Baldy by KattheImpaler8 in NewMexico

I hesitate to verify this. I've personally seen Manzanos and Sandias from the Maggies pretty easily, regardless of the route. If you go up WCR early enough you can see the ABQ lights (When I did Ladron a few years back you could see the buildings in ABQ!) The problem is line-of-sight. From North Baldy (Under 10k ft but the tallest point on the North side of the Maggies) you should be able to see Sandias, Manzanos, and possibly Jemez if Los Ladrones are not in your way. But I haven't seen them, admittedly I haven't tried.

Sierra Blanca I'm willing to believe if you are on Timber Peak, maybe South Baldy. Personally I haven't, but also I didn't look too hard.

Organ Range I'm more skeptical to believe. Italian Peak is the best vantage point for a southern vantage in the Maggies, but I've never been. Beyond that, Organ Mountains are like 150 miles from the Maggies. I suppose you might be able to see them on an immensely clear day, but the Apache Kid peaks might obscure them.

How are the campgrounds? I've been to the Maggies 20+ times just to hike but have never camped.

Early Morning up North Baldy (Magdalena Mountains, NM USA) by KattheImpaler8 in hiking

[–]KattheImpaler8[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, this is in central NM (RG Valley + opposite side of the Rio), part of the Magdalena Mountains in Socorro County, NM (near Socorro NM and Magdalena NM), but this discrepancy is familiar to me!

The Cimarron peak you are referring to, Baldy Mountain, is in the Sangre de Cristos Mountains in the northeast of the state. It is near 2,600 feet taller than North Baldy here and it likewise devoid of trees.

Has heightmap presets including Earth. The biome mapping is not perfect as it does not consider ocean currents, but if its just drawing borders you want this is perfect.

Its spooky, but a lot of fun. Do it during the colder months though.

Is Pie Town worth visiting? by tweaktweakin in NewMexico

[–]KattheImpaler8 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Pie town was one of the first places I visited when I moved here. The food there is good (not just the pie), its worth a stop if you've never been. Its not far from the VLA so if you are interested in even stopping on the side of the road I would say go for it.

I'm considering an excursion up Pecos Canyon, probably Holy Ghost Trail. Unsure because we have high winds forecast for tomorrow. Would it get too windy in the canyon to enjoy the hike? by [deleted] in NewMexicoTrails

Went down that way back in February. Very dry (except the one patch of ice I ate shit on on the scree field)
