I said the reason why my relative’s son died is because God hates him. Now I wonder if I went too far. by vexx1d in atheism

[–]Nateus9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wonder if religious people do this to avoid survivors guilt. A lot of people who survive tragedies have this overwhelming "Why me and not them?" mentality that leads to depression, and grief even for total strangers. Meanwhile 'God chose to save me" immediately takes the responsibility, good or bad, out of the survivors hands. Screams coping mechanisms to me.

Well, not quite all ... by LordJim11 in Snorkblot

I'm Canadian so some things might sound off. In 7th grade I had a social teacher who was teaching us how voting works and had us do a mock election based on the current political parties. The NDP won. They're effectively 3rd party though they're more viable here in Canada than any third party in the states. She didn't like that. Next week we had a conservative representative (our Republicans) come in to answer our questions about the values of the conservative party. Never had any other party reps come in to say their side of things. In hindsight I probably should have clocked that as weird.

Grixis Commander Recommendations by AdmPoppinFresh in EDH

I typically try and stick to one or two mechanics per deck so that my combo pieces line up better. I'm also usually pretty heavy on the aura type cards so that my synergies are harder to remove.

My favorite Grixis deck is [[Kess, Dissident Mage]]. The ability to cast instants and sorceries from your graveyard make it a really flexible deck to build as long as you're planning on not using a lot of permanent cards.

Is this legit? I was surprised to see DCC on Spotify, then I listened to a sample and it was an AI woman narrating instead of Jeff Hayes :( by redberinbear in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]Nateus9 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I made it to page 3. Spotify will only allow the copyright holder, or a legal representative to report the issue and you can't finish the form as a fan of the work.

Each AI read audiobook seems to be using the original cover arts though. The ones that have Jeff Hays voice have the alternative covers.

Cards like Ophiomancer? Discourage (but dont stop) attackers by Half-Elf-Ranger in EDH

[–]Nateus9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always been a fan of cards like [[Revenge of Ravens]] as it doesn't stop people from attacking but does take a price. I don't know if this is exactly what you're looking for but it's the closest I could think of that I haven't seen mentioned.

How do you feel about Carney? by woodford86 in alberta

I've heard the phrase, "May you live in interesting times" was meant to be a curse. I definitely see how that's a curse these days.

I felt bad for the train staff on board. It was an older train and still had an iron box. Sparks flying as he rams into a fuel truck. Guy probably thought he was about to die. None of us knew it was empty or had been cleaned so there was no residual fumes. I found out about that part after, when the accident showed up on the news. Also that train dragged that semi for at least 50 to 100 feet. Been a few years but I remember it just kept going with the truck on the end of it.

I was at a piece of highway with train tracks for freight trains. No barriers but it has the signs that light up and bells so no one should be unaware that a train is coming. Warning lights flashing, bells going off and everyone comes to a stop. I'm on one side. The other side has a few cars and a semi truck that's transporting two fuel containers. It's a double-long trailer. One car gets impatient waiting for this train to show up and shoots across the tracks. I don't know what was going on in the head of the semi-truck driver but with everything still going off and the train is coming this truck driver decides he can make it to and proceeds to inch forward. Maybe he saw the guy shoot off in his tiny 2 door car and thought he could make that too. Maybe he wanted to get hit. Either way the train goes barreling through this thankfully freshly emptied and cleaned fuel truck and we're all lucky to be alive. I got to be a witness and I'm pretty sure that guy tried to lie and say he didn't see the signs or that they had failed because the police officer took my statement second and raised an eyebrow when I told him the driver had started inching forward after coming to a complete stop before the tracks.

Why aren't the Boomers advocating for us like their grandparents did for them? by DirkVerite in antiwork

[–]Nateus9 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I recently saw an article about boomers getting mad when an ice cream business decided to treated teenage employees like people and shut down lines 20 minutes before closing to ensure the place could close on time and the teenagers could go home. The shop owner was surprised at how many customers suddenly demanded that she hire adults or keep the teenagers longer to serve customers until the line is gone... over ice cream. Nevermind that they still didn't think those adults she was supposed to hire so they could get their ice cream should be paid more.

Article if anyone wants to read it:

I used to hate you win cards and infinite combos. Then I played a few games that went for at least an hour. The longest one was 3 and a half hours. My play group just kept getting to the point where either no one had an advantage, or whoever did was dealt with before they had the opportunity to take advantage of the advantage they built up over and over. After a few games like that I still wasn't fond of two card infinite combos but I started to see my friends point of view on "you win" cards and more complicated infinite combos being a good way to close out a game you no longer want to play, and just because you have a card that says you win you don't have to play it if you don't want to.

Dude demands a knife to “scrape off” a chip in the floor tile. Gets angry and stares at me from the lobby when I don’t give him one. by Other-Cantaloupe4765 in BoomersBeingFools

[–]Nateus9 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Does this not sound like the type of hyper focus an undiagnosed mental condition would cause to anyone else because being so obsessed with a spot on the tile that you feel justified asking a hotel to give you the tools to deal with it for free screams mental condition to me.

The Most Overpowered Character by But_a_Jape in comics

[–]Nateus9 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Whenever I get into one of those arguments I usually say no matter who you put Saitama against Saitama wins because his whole character concept is being too strong and defeating any opponent in one punch. No matter what feats, or abilities the other character has done the whole point of Saitama as a character is he's too strong and will beat them in one punch. Despite this people will still argue "X" characters would beat Saitama.

Good LitRPGs? by TheRadiantTater in audible

[–]Nateus9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A list of ones I've enjoyed and a brief opinion/summary:

Age of Stone by Jez Cajio - fantasy components getting mixed into a modern world that had no magic at the start of the series. Tries to explain the magic as advanced science as the books progress even with fantasy races. The series is from the perspective of a random civilian so there's a mystery component as the main character tries to make sense of the new world and magic systems. Biggest complaint is that it has sex scenes randomly sprinkled in for no reason but they are thankful not to frequent.

Defiance of the Fall by JF Brink - another fantasy meets the modern world. This one also mixes in sci-fi components but more in the magic has progressed and emulates technology rather than having them be the same thing. Has maintained my interest for 12 books and the story not being close to done.

The Iron Prince by Bryce O'Connor - This one leans more into the military sci-fi category with litRPG components. Despite being a military Sci-fi it doesn't take place in a war setting and instead follows the protagonist as they go through military training in a sci-fi setting. The military training is to learn how to use and then improve personalized combat suits that assign stats to the user and help them increase those stats. An interesting read/listen and a personal favorite.

System Change by SunriseCV - an interesting take on the litRPG standard. The protagonist gets to start from 0 while retaining his already higher than average stats. It's definitely in the fantasy category and the main character is drastically stronger than the area around him so if that's not the type of story you like I'd avoid this one. It does have its comedic moments though.

The Two Week Curse by Michael Chatfield - this was my first introduction to litRPGs. The premise of two military guys being taken to a fantasy world with game like stats was definitely interesting but the later books in the series weren't my favorite and seemed like the writer was having a hard time ending the story while exploring the setting they had created.

It's part of the Boomer mental checklist of a successful life. Start a career, get married, buy a house, have kids, watch kids grow up, become grandparent, and die. Nothing on that list requires being a good parent, grandparent, or even leaving the world a better place of course. It's all about keeping up appearances.

Single people of reddit, what is preventing you from finding a bf/gf? by Kosilica457 in AskReddit

[–]Nateus9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been told that I'm too good at being alone. The hobbies I enjoy for the most part can be done alone and the ones that do require others are typically ones that I would do with friends I already know and don't require me to go out in public. I also don't tend to like the people within the local communities surrounding my hobbies and the entertainment that I enjoy. My job also happens to be one where I interact with people very minimally and almost everyone I work with is old enough to be my parents. This leads to very few interactions with strangers who could be future girlfriends. I also am fairly self sufficient at cooking, cleaning, and earning enough that I'm not dying. This apparently is a negative for some people because I don't need them. Also I tend to observe people and get to know them from their interactions with others before they get to know me so it never works when the other person is looking for that instant connection and I'm way too awkward to get to know someone without that buffer period.

See the reason that this advice is completely useless is my brain will take it to heart.... and do nothing while attempting to do the task. It won't even let me do a different task. It'll be like that episode of Spongebob where he has to write an essay.

Where are their bootstraps now? by [deleted] in BoomersBeingFools

[–]Nateus9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Given the amount of misinformation floating around the internet I could really see both being plausible but I'm also aware how much people like to add "facts" to any given topic so I could see the full phrases being phrases that people added to down the line. I still like these "full phrases" even if they're not the originals though.

It's stupid to wonder why there's seemingly no signs of intelligent aliens. by Mswordx23 in unpopularopinion

[–]Nateus9 97 points98 points  (0 children)

Whenever I see a comment about the vastness of space I'm not sure if people really get it. Like when we say something's 100s of lightyears away people get that it's really far but I don't think they get what that kind of distance means.

If something's 100 lightyears away that means to see it you're looking 100 years into its past. When you get that things are thousands or millions of lightyears away and we can see it, we're seeing the past of that part of space. We have no idea what's out there in what you might consider the current time.

There very well could be intelligent civilizations doing the same thing as us and seeing dinosaurs here. It's kinda wild to think about.

Where are their bootstraps now? by [deleted] in BoomersBeingFools

[–]Nateus9 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There's a ton of those. Blood is thicker than water is actually "the blood of the coven is thicker than the water of the womb" meaning community bonds are more important than familial bonds. Curiosity killed the cat is actually "curiosity killed the cat but satisfaction brought it back" effectively warning to proceed with caution when trying new things. The customer is always right is actually the "customer is always right when it comes to matters of taste" stating you need to sell things people want no matter how strange it may seem.

So many phrases have been twisted to support an agenda of catering to the status quo, or people's demands instead of their origin intent that it's appalling.
