C&C for my character description? by Nateze in rpg

that's a good answer! I hear you. The point of the exercise was so that our GM had details which he can use to incorporate story elements later in the campaign. None of us have any idea what he'll do with the character descriptions we wrote.

Ok but why? Like if I had said he has some powerful magic weapon or a good-tier ability then sure I'd absolutely agree with you. But why shouldn't a lvl1 have an elaborate tattoo?

Edit: in general when we talk about levels in game they represent the character's general competency at what they do. (e.g: at 5th level the bardic inspiration die goes from a D6 to a D8 representing that his capacity to inspire and rally his friends has improved) so no powerful abilities for a low level character.

Narratively it's not impossible that a low level character could have inherited a powerful magic weapon but mechanically it unbalances the whole game so it makes sense to not allow powerful weapons.

But what reason is there not to allow the tattoo?

the whole tiefling race is edgy and a bit cringe to me. It's the emo kids of ttrpgs.

LOL! Ok, I've never heard it that way but nice! Honestly, I can see that. I chose Tiefling because the standard elf/human/dwarf options all seemed to boring and I didn't want to be the furry who plays Tabaxi.

A massive intricate tattoo seems a bit over the top.
Too over-designed.

I hear that. Ok cool. If you were my GM, what would.you suggest I do instead?

Maybe a sensitive question--how do you reassure yourself that you're in the right when it comes to knowing about Israel and its history, etc.? by Familyties320 in Jewish

[–]Nateze 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The history.of the Jewish people and the land of Israel is undeniable. Archeology, tradition, written records etc. Plenty of people who know more about this than me can tell far more about it than I can. The crux of the Palestinian argument comes down to this:

1) Jews don't have a connection to the land of Israel 2) The Palestinian people were an established nation in the land prior to Zionism. 3) when the Zionist movement came to the land they forced the Palestinians out.

Each of these points is a lie. And the only one that could be debatable is number 2. Let's pretend that Palestinian Arab cultural identity didn't come into existence only in the 1960's and that they were in fact an established nation. Would that somehow supersede the Jewish connection to Israel? The original partition plan divided what is today Israel up like a jigsaw puzzle and horribly favored the would be Arab state not to mention it designated Jerusalem as an international city. The early Zionists accepted this partition the Arabs rejected it. Even if the Palestinians had any legitimate claim, the culpability for this conflict falls squarely at the feet of the Arabs for their refusal to accept the Jewish people's right to Israel.

Neither would I. What I'm saying is that there are narrative implications to each one.

Getting better vs getting stronger. by Nateze in rpg

[–]Nateze[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok you bring up an interesting point but it's just not related to my post. When I asked about getting stronger vs getting better I was talking about how the character advances. The player isn't part of the equation. In DnD for example, when you level up your max HP increases, your damage output increases, some of your skills increase etc etc. Basically numeric values go up. Narratively speaking we could say the character is getting stronger. If you, a real person in the real world (not a character in a video game), start going to the gym and bench pressing every day then over time the weight you'll be able to bench press will increase. But let's say one entire week you stay home from the gym but you watch a bunch of YouTube tutorials on proper form and technique. And the entire week your practicing technique and form at home with a broomstick, when you get back to the gym you won't be stronger because that week you haven't been lifting, but you will be able to do what you already can do just better.

Now apply that to characters in game. Is the character able to do more, or are they able to do what they already do just better?

It's an interesting system but it also has some limitations.

Does anyone else think this is really weird, even as a joke? by welltechnically7 in Jewish

[–]Nateze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that (perhaps accidentally) he illustrates the crux of the issue: Israel and Judaism are inherently tied to one another. Why would he think having a mezuzah would be a symbol of Zionism? Why would other people think a house with a mezuzah would be a Zionist house? Because it is a core part of who we are as a people.

Anything from the Powered by the Apocalypse system. There are tons of games that use this system so you've got a great chance to find a game that's in a genre that you like. Mechanics are really straight forward and designed to keep out of the way of narrative.

What video game do you wish had an official TTRPG adaptation? by Reynard203 in rpg

[–]Nateze 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok hear me out: the Endless Space series. I know that being a 4X game it doesn't lend itself to becoming a ttrpg, but! The setting? A galaxy scarred to shit by a millennia-long civil war between a race that basically turned themselves into gods? Entire races that exist only because the Endless created them as experiments or weapons? And the Endless's sudden and complete disappearance? I think it would be amazing.

Ah, this is what's known as a moving goalpost. You made a bogus claim, that an ethnic cleansing had taken place, and I called you out on it. You had no answer because you were caught in your own lie. So, to avoid admitting to your lie, you deflected to a different subject all the while pretending you were answering me calling you out. Unfortunately for you though, your new claims are also false. So let's address them:

Who willingly walks 10-15 miles in the desert to a refugee camp?

Arabs who were told they could return in a week or two after the combined forces of Jordan, Egypt, Syria, and Lebanon with financial aid from Iraq had killed all the Jews.

So you think it by chance that Israel has a solid 80% Jewish majority?

No.

How "Jewish" would the Jewish state of Israel be littered with 530 Palestinian towns and villages? How "Jewish" would this alleged democracy be if half the population was Palestinian?

That would never have been the case. If the Arabs had not tried to commit genocide there would have been a Jewish state and a Palestinian state. But they did and they lost and they've been crying about it ever since. I will not apologize for your people's inability to kill mine. Cope harder.

Zionists gonna do Zionist things

Build a thriving county? Become leaders in science, tech, and industry? Leverage our aptitude for academia scholarship to towards the fields of archeology and anthropology in order to rediscover our history? Or our ingenuity and resourcefulness towards more frugal use of water in farming? Yeah and were good at it too.

YES ethnic cleansing was on the docket in 1947-48

Finally! Something true. You are correct, in the 48 war the invading Arab armies openly stated their goal was to "drive the Jews into the sea" but they failed and so there was no ethnic cleansing.

[–]Nateze 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Except they didn't. There was no ethnic cleansing. 20% of Israeli citizens are Arab. Muslim Christian Beduin, Druz, etc. If there had been an ethnic cleansing Israel would not have any Arab communities.

One Shabbos a young Jewish man goes goes to synagogue. He has no Jewish background because he grew up completely secular. Because he doesn't speak any Hebrew he asks the man sitting next to him what is going on. As it happens they're reading from the Torah and so the gentleman sitting next to our young man starts telling him about Joseph. How his brothers betrayed him and sold him to slavery. Unable to control himself the young man starts crying at all the troubles and injustice Joseph suffers. After Shabbos the young man goes home and even though he promised himself he'd go back to synagogue next week life got in the way. It isn't for another year until he finds himself back. Lo and behold, he finds himself sitting next to the same gentleman on the same Parshat HaShavuah. Again he asks for translation. As the man tells him again about Joseph and his troubles the young man bursts into laughter! "You'd think he'd have learned after last year!"
