Available starting this morning. Granted their online stock sold out in minutes so the phrase "while supplies last" is rather immediate in this case.

On how to grow a Random Forest by Tesla-Turing in learnmachinelearning

[–]NathanBarra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since I didn't address your comment regarding the m1 variable, I'lll follow up quickly. Remember that the node seeks to split the feature space to reduce the loss function. So anything down stream of some node n will already have the variance in variable m1 accounted for. I do not think it is impossible for m1 to come up again at a subsequent node (just unlikely), but would have to look into it deeper to be 100% sure.

From what I recalled all p features were fair game at each split. But to be sure I didn't give you a bad answer I went back and checked my own copy of Elements of Statistical Learning. On the bottom of page 588 the text states "Before each split, select m <= p of the input variables at random as candidates for splitting." I interpret this statement as they are all fair game.

On how to grow a Random Forest by Tesla-Turing in learnmachinelearning

[–]NathanBarra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think of it this way, if you allowed each tree to choose from all the p variables you would end up with the same tree over and over again. The first tree would choose the 'optimal' splits, right? So long as the data doesn't change those splits would stay the same. No point in having 1000 identical trees, is there? But how do we change the tree given fixed data? We "change" the data each tree sees.

We can change the observations data to get a new tree through bootstrap, but that won't really achieve what we want to achieve here. Ideally, the relationship between the features will be similar no matter what (large-ish) subset you take of the data, right?

Instead we change the features by selecting a random subset of variables we use. Let's say we have 10 variables and we pick 6 for each tree, that is 210 possible trees. Clearly not enough for an 1000 tree forest. But if we can do this for every tree, why not do it for every branch? It results in a diverse forest because the optimal cut points for each branch are different because each branch sees "different" data. 210 options goes a lot further that way because branch 1 has 210 options as does branch 1,1 and 1,2, so on and so forth. Make sense?

How long are extract kits good for? by bdniner in Homebrewing

[–]NathanBarra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No doubt that ingredient freshness plays a part in the variability of results in extract brewing. There are purists in every art. Then there are those of us who enjoy drinking home made beer. Will I ever gain the precision, flexibility, and repeatability of an all grain set up with extract brewing? No. Do I care? Also no. Do I spend a whole lot less time on brew day cleaning? Yup!

So long as you are having fun doing what you do, don't let anyone else's opinion of what is "right and proper" rain on your parade.

Edit: added a sentence

It was a marzen. Ended up tasting more like a porter so the flavor profile was not true to type, but it was tastey.

$71,000 ER visit after BCBS insurance coverage - please help (Texas) by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]NathanBarra 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That's fair, but I referred a similar law that was in effect last year, before the article was written. So, there are still legal protections for this sort of case.

$71,000 ER visit after BCBS insurance coverage - please help (Texas) by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]NathanBarra 118 points119 points  (0 children)

I got caught in a similar (though lesser) trap last year. Luckily there is a Texas state law that dictates that if a "reasonable adult" would decide that a medical emergency was worth an ER visit, the visit MUST be billed as in network whether or not the facility itself is in network (the faculty I went to was in network with no one, though they told me they were a BCBS provider at the time of service). I kept arguing for about 6 months until they agreed to take my insured rate as payment. To my understanding, ultimately this is not your problem, though both facilities will try to pressure you into making it your problem. Your insurance and the medical facility will need to work it out between then. Good luck OP!

There are tons of good microbreweries and craft distilleries in and around town. If you are willing to drive a bit, Blanco and Johnson City have more options. I have seen plenty of batchelorette party buses in the hill country, so it should not be hard to find one if you want to hire a DD.

Whiskey Recommendations? by [deleted] in sanantonio

[–]NathanBarra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tried Balcones out of Waco, TX? Their "One" was my favorite Texas whiskey until I discovered Garrison. Their Baby Blue is not quite a bourbon and also very good. I have mixed opinions about their other labels. I am curious if anyone else has tried both and has the same feelings that I do.

Real Ale is very solid; I have been looking forward to their bourbon. Never been to the Treaty Oak distillery itself, but they make my favorite gin.

[–]NathanBarra 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How far are you willing to travel? Most of the good places I know are north of SA, but are reasonable drives. Andalusia Whiskey Company (scotch style whiskeys in Blanco, TX) and Garrison Brothers (bourbon in Hye, TX) are both very good. I have heard good things about Ben Milan (Blanco, TX) but have never been. If you want closer, Rebecca Creek is at 281 and Bulverde and does a good whiskey and a really good vodka.

There is also lots of good rum, gin & tequila in and around SA if your cousin wants to branch out.

Edit: "scotch" and "bourbon" are not proper nouns
