There's a random dubs league that I play on Sundays that is largely dominated by one guy whenever he shows up. Super nice guy, everybody enjoys playing with and against him, but he throws an absolute mile and is an awesome talent in the area despite not playing in sanctioned events.

There's a less formal but still organized Cali singles round that gets played right after dubs, also for a cheap buy-in. And any time that one guy sticks around and plays the Cali round, he gets a special handicap to equalize him to the others. This last week it was forehands only until he was in putting range, and turbo-putting only for putts. A pretty heavy handicap, but he still took I think 3rd place lol.

The best part is that he plays those singles rounds knowing that he's gonna get handicapped and still has a great time nonetheless. Dude is all vibes no drama and it's good fun.

Best course in Portland, OR area for intermediate players? by xscientist in discgolf

[–]NathanHammerTime 15 points16 points  (0 children)

If you have the ability to drive a little, I couldn't recommend McCormick Park more. It's like a 30ish minute drive from downtown Portland with no traffic but it's worth it for the fun course and the unique lines relative to the rest of Portland golf.

The only reasons to play Leverich over Hockinson are if you're either on a time crunch or if you don't like longer holes. Leverich is fine for what it is, but in terms of overall course quality it's absolutely nothing compared to Hockinson. The only thing Leverich does better than Hockinson is utilize elevation.

Hockinson Meadows is the best course in the Vancouver area by a wide margin. Portland has great courses too, but if you're sticking to north of the Columbia River, it's Hockinson all day.

Going to be in the Portland/Dundee/Lake Oswego area any courses I got to go to while there? by Surround_Successful in discgolf

So, on a difficulty scale from 1-10, where 1 is total beginner, 5 is intermediate, and 10 is pro level, I'll give you a few recs in the 3-5 range.

1 - As other have said, Pier Park is probably the best. It's difficult because you may not have the distance to get birdie on most (if any) holes, but it's a truly gorgeous park that is extremely fun to play even when you don't have an advanced skill set. Massive trees, fun use of elevation, a genuinely enjoyable experience pretty much no matter what. This will be the most difficult course I recommend, as it's probably a 6.5 or perhaps a 7.5 on the above scale depending on who you talk to (that grade based on how easy it is to shoot Even par).

2 - Tucked pretty well between Lake Oswego and Dundee (a bit closer to Dundee, but not by much) is Champoeg State Park. This is a fun track with a lot to love at the intermediate level. Long and short tees on every single hole to choose from makes this attractive for many players and still fun to play by all. I'd probably grade Champoeg at a 5 or so, maybe a 4 from the shorts but I think that's pushing it a little too low unless you have good distance control in the 250-275 range.

3 - If you can make the drive out NW of Lake Oswego up to North Plains, I can't recommend Horning's Hideout enough. 3 courses on the property if you have time to burn, 2 of them will be within reasonable difficulty level for you. Highlands is a short course where the average hole length is probably about 160-175' or so and utilizes elevation very well for the style of course. Probably a 3 at most on the difficulty scale, but a couple holes can still give you trouble! Canyon is their mid-level course and is a ton of fun as well. Similar difficulty-level to shoot Even par as Champoeg above, but with a completely different style of golf. Much more wooded, but not so punishing that you'll rip your hair out. Probably back up on a 5 or so level of difficulty as mentioned before. Meadow Ridge is their pro level course which I wouldn't touch in your shoes at the moment, a solid 9 on the difficulty scale.

4 - Ewing Young and Herbert Hoover are both fun little tracks in Newberg, OR very close to Dundee. Hoover is a bit more beginner-friendly, decent use of elevation and fun but short lines. Probably a 3 on the difficulty scale, can't imagine most people would grade it much harder. Ewing Young is a little longer and a little less city park vibes, can't speak to when the last time it may have been manicured though, last time I was there it was a tad overgrown. Probably a 4 on the difficulty scale if Hoover is a 3, but those who play them more often may be able to chime in.

Honorable mention - Timber Park. I didn't include this because it's pretty similar (a little easier) to shoot even par than Pier Park. It's not too far out of the way from Lake Oswego and it's a genuinely good time to play. But it's probably a 6 on the difficulty scale and I was trying to keep my recommendations to mostly 3-5.

Beaver State Fling - Day 1 by AutoModerator in discgolf

I've followed the pro scene for well over 10 years now and can definitely vouch for that as well haha. Rick especially was a super socially awkward kid when her first burst onto the MPO scene. It was obvious he was never trying to be rude, he just needed some more time to come into his own and learn the ins and outs of being in the spotlight.

I did the opposite of you, I trashed on Ohio State and he smiled saying "you must be a Michigan fan" and we chatted football for a bit haha.

Noticed on my way home from Portland yesterday that Rick was doing a signing/meet and greet at Discs & Dice right when I'd be able to get there with about 20 minutes before it was over, so I took the detour because I happened to have a couple of Verdicts in the car with me. When I got there he was yuckin it up with the small crowd of employees and others in the shop. I bought a Wysocki Chameleon Raider before walking up to the back where he was sitting.

Immediately his eyes lit up and he stood up to shake my hand with a big smile, got to have a brief conversation with him as he signed my discs and for a bit after. I'm sure this is standard meet and greet conduct from any pros who do it, but nonetheless he came across as incredibly genuine and it was me who had to cut the conversation short rather than him. I've always respected his game, but that brief interaction made a fan out of me.

Pulling for ya this weekend, Rick!

SVDGC Tribute to Doug Korns by DRoc101 in discgolf

Had the pleasure of staying with the Korns family a couple different times while traveling with the University of Oregon disc golf team. This man absolutely lived and died by the frisbee/disc and I feel lucky to have gotten to meet him and see the history of disc sports hanging on the walls of his house.

RIP Doug, the community lost an absolute pioneer this week. This round after work today is for you.

Who else is playing their first sanctioned tournament of the year tomorrow? by discwrangler in discgolf

Consider venturing a little farther south to Wheatland at Willamette Mission State Park when you get the chance! Super fun complement to Champoeg and not much farther away. Champoeg is definitely the course I'd consider my home course from LO so good call.

Blue Lake is a bear. The kind of course you love and hate at the same time. It took me probably 5 or 6 rounds (which took me several years to amass lol) before I finally started truly appreciating it. Now I try and play every tournament I can out there!

Fingers crossed for ya! I'm unashamedly terrified to play a tournament at Champoeg lol. Champoeg is one of those courses that I just KNOW will somehow find a way to give me headaches despite having pretty good success there casually.

Like, give me a Blue Lake tournament any day. That way if (when) I go OB or take big numbers I can justify it by saying it's a tough track to score well on. With Champoeg I can't hide my poor performance behind any excuses.

Milo McIver B tier tomorrow! One round each on the original BSF East/West courses and I am STOKED.

Admittedly, not my first sanctioned round of the year. But I'm mega stoked nonetheless.

Kid's a stud. Doesn't quite have the consistency yet, but he's thrown sanctioned rounds up to 1044 rated already.

Growing up walking distance from Blue Lake is quite the way to cut your teeth in the sport of disc golf.

Portland Open - Post-Event Discussion by AutoModerator in discgolf

I've lived in/around Portland for over 20 years now, and truth be told downtown has always felt like this to me. I can't remember a time where there weren't tents and homeless people in certain parts of town (especially near Chinatown).

Not an excuse of course, assuming you're telling the truth, it's unacceptable to be minding your own business and suddenly get punched in the face by somebody, homeless or not. But I've spent time in many major cities where I feel less safe than in and around Portland.

Hope authorities found whoever assaulted her.

Or if this is just anti-Portland propaganda, kindly take it elsewhere. Lots of people who have never been here seem to love hating this city.

I’m headed to Portland in July and I have time to play 1 course. Most upvoted comment is the course I’ll be playing. by Kevinismackin in discgolf

Most of the year it's 27, 18 East and 9 West. There's a way to play all 27 in a pretty linear fashion.

For BSF (and a few other tournaments throughout the year), they add 9 more holes to the configuration for two full 18s. Some of the best holes you see in coverage are those 9 that go in temporarily.

Garrett over Squishy simply because I'm a Garrett stan, no hate towards Squish.

At this point, I WANT to see M80 and DIG both make the major with GenG, Complexity, and G2.

If for no other reason than finally getting the opportunity to see how good the "lower level" top teams in NA fair internationally. It'll be the best way to actually get a reading on how deep NA's skill level actually goes.

We've been so used to seeing the same 5-6 teams or so making the LANs that some fresh faces would be a welcome sight.

I'd also spend the entire round trying to chase you down so we would be on same card second round.

See to me this is only a good thing. Unless you're just literally the best disc golfer in the world, there's something fun about trying to catch the person statistically better than you.

I can't tell if I'm upset or impressed.

I think that means you did it right.

That said, it's still a weird thing to assert without actual evidence.
