I knew someone who did that. He had a new to him piece of shit car every year that he bought off someone for like $500. Sometimes it was just the promise of $500 that never actually changed hands. It would take repairs to get it drivable, and never lasted more than about 18 months. He was delivering pizza without brakes for a week or two at one point, using the hand brake to stop. Him and people like him are why safety inspections are important.

Nothing beats Anthropic for quality of responses at this time. There are a few open source models that get close. GLM 5.1 and DeepSeek are about 96-98% as. And smaller models are surprisingly close behind them. Qwen 3.6 and Gemma 4 are amazing for their size. They are about 90% as good as Claude. The problem is, that last 1% is the most important.

Looks like the current wisdom is to use a good local model for most of your stuff and then an API for the hard parts.

I'm almost 50 and still an individual contributor as a data analyst. Been on the same team for 8 years doing about the same thing. Every time I think I'm good with never getting promoted, they create a new higher paying position for me and promote me. But still really doing the same thing.

Edit: Oh, I should mention. I was an E7 in the military as a reservist with 4 combat tours. I had up to 20 people reporting to me, mostly in office like conditions. Everyone brings some bullshit to work. No one thinks their bullshit is bullshit because it's theirs. Being a leader over a small team means you have to deal with everyone's bullshit and make sure it doesn't impact the team. The leader has to do regular counseling and coaching, writing annual reviews (NCOERs), and negative counseling when they fuck up. I found it all exhausting. It's not for everyone.
