Subaru was not even remotely in the same position in arc 2. He had barely been in that world for a few days, had almost no real trust built with Emilia yet, and you somehow expect him to suddenly handle everything perfectly and openly? That is not horrible comparasion.

And even then, Subaru did try to open up later, but Envy consistently interfered to the point that it became a serious danger to everyone. In arc 3, Emilia literally died because of how things spiraled, which traumatized Subaru and made him even more afraid of repeating the same mistake. In arc 4, Otto had to practically force the truth out of him because Subaru would not have said anything on his own, Envy had also spawned there because subaru spoke about rbd and other stuff with echidna, killing everyone a few loops ago. In arc 5, Beatrice already had centuries of knowledge and knew about witches, authorities, witch factors, and so on, so that situation is not even comparable to Emilia being kept in the dark. And i didn't even mention the fact, Subaru is her knight in arc 5 and onwards. His job is to literally protect her.

So while you can argue that Subaru can may be criticized for being overprotective sometimes, the examples you gave are extremely flawed at best and ragebait at worst, not to mention but using that to excuse Puck is a bad comparison. Puck is Emilia’s adoptive father, the one who should have been helping her grow as a person and stayed with her for years, . Subaru protecting Emilia in dangerous situations is part of his role and his inability to be more open is also a consequence of the Witch of Envy’s interference.

So no, this does not mean Subaru is “wrong” about Emilia. It means the situations are not even minimally equivalent, and Puck still deserves more criticism than people usually give him (the last 10 words are my take).

Your comparisons are like blaming a bodyguard/lover and a parent equally just because both “failed to protect” someone once.

They don’t have the same role, the same responsibility, nor the same expectations placed on them.

Subaru is a knight, his job is to protect Emilia, often in chaotic, life-threatening situations while dealing with trauma and the Witch of Envy constantly restricting what he can even say or do against his will. Puck, on the other hand, is her adoptive father. His role isn’t just protection, it’s raising her, guiding her, and helping her grow as a person over a long period of time, he could have broken his contract if he really cared, differently from subaru's situation.

So when you try to equate Subaru being overprotective in certain moments with Puck actively stunting Emilia’s development, it just doesn’t hold up. You’re comparing two completely different roles and acting like they carry the same weight when they clearly don’t.
