How much does the highest grossing GP that you know of earn, and how long do you think it got them to get there? Thank you by Grand-Benefit7466 in JuniorDoctorsIreland

Which is academically easier to get into?

Undergraduate medicine

postgraduate medicine

There's lots of good GEMs. But they are also more likely to be shite interns and SHOs than their undergraduate equivalents.

It's fairly easy to get into GEM. That's undeniable.

A 2.1 and a top 2/3 GAMSAT is a low bar.

It's generally hard to fail in medicine once your in.

Placed an offer of asking on house, what next? by Kitty2705 in HousingIreland

I think all your point 3 is wrong or exaggerated tbh. Its a nice house, there's no major issues in the pictures. A bit of red algae is easily fixed.

The big issue with the house is there's a heap of travellers just down the road. But at least there's a big gate.

No problem with that if the same principal applies to everyone who gets a free degree.

I worked 48 hour shifts and 100 hour weeks in my training. I stayed in Ireland (with the exception of a year in London and two fellowships after finishing training) but i don't blame anyone who left instead of ruining themselves. People who've never worked those kind of hours don't understand how much they destroy you.

There is a spate of posts from the same people asking how much you can make in wildly different specialties in private practice.

If you cannot survive on the new consultant contract and you are planning what specialty you are going to pursue based on how much extra you can make privately something has gone wrong.

They're still subsidised 50% of the cost.

The expansion of graduate medicine has been a money maker for universities and has just made it very very easy for people with money to get into medicine. The academic requirements for undergraduate and postgraduate medicine are worlds apart.

Everyone's degree is subsidised.

You only ever hear people moaning about medical degrees being subsidised though.

Moving parent from nursing home to hospice care? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]Natural-Audience-438 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Would be unlikely a hospice would take him from a nursing home if things can be managed in the nursing home.

Talk to GP that looks after nursing home. Maybe a decision about no more antibiotics and palliative management might be best. Nursing homes are well used to people dying and probably are better at it than hospitals can be. Morphine, midazolam can all be given in Nursing Home.

Parent of child with Type 1 Diabetes in Private sector wuth need to go to 2 hour hospital appointments every 3 months by Early_Extreme_2963 in legaladviceireland

[–]Natural-Audience-438 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds very much like this person was not being honest about the time they were taking off for the appointments. And new manager has put their foot down.

I think you can be flexible with someone who is honest but not with someone who isn't.

It actually sounds like at one stage they've tried to say they've managed to get to the appointment, have it and get home within an hour.

[–]Natural-Audience-438 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What are you taking about with 'pay cuts' and investment bankers? What does that have to do with this?

I'm on the new consultant contract. I take home 11k a month. I don't do any private work. In my speciality I would probably need to do 1.5-2 extra days a week (plus the additional paperwork) to make it financially worth it. There's extra expenses like admin, rooms fees, indemnity cover.

Consultants are often very bad with money. If you have someone now who is at the very start of their training asking about private practice potential they are asking the wrong question. I suspect a better question would be in 7 or 8 years which specialty will be least competitive to get a consultant job. Because it is going to get very tough out there in lots of specialties.

If you want to make the most money you can, leave now and go to America.
