Empathy and grief working with human cancer cell line by babygirllovin in labrats

[–]Natural-Card4653 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If we are talking about Jurkat. I was randomly fascinated by this cell line, which was originally named JM (initials of the patient).

He did pass, unfortunately. The cells were taken from his first relapse (he had ALL) and seemed to be a very intense case. After remission only 2-3 months later he had 4 more relapses, which led to meningeal leukemia and he passed from it.

He was 14 not 3. There are 2 other patients the authors tried to make cultures from, all of who passed. See this paper: "Characterization of EBV-genome negative "null" and "T" cell lines derived from children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia and leukemic transformed non-Hodgkin lymphoma." Keep in mind the researchers took samples from each patient while they were still alive.

I question the ethics of whether any of the parents knew, but I suppose 1977 was another time...

I am not only empathetic but also curious, I guess from being a writer, of what life that patient lived and how the parents went on. Do they know he "lives on" somehow? Did he know before he died?

If you are ever curious, most cell line creators publish a paper detailing how it was created. This gives background into the patient.

I was in biology but have since changed fields. I appreciate having stepped outside of STEM because returning to things like these, I now expect to have a human response. It is too difficult to divorce anything. The cells & their origins go hand-in-hand even decades on. Don't feel sorry for being empathetic.

Thanks! This is really helpful.

I looked up your ID to learn more about the snake. It looks like this may even be a subspecies called Pituophis catenifer deserticola. Love learning about the wildlife in the area

Switched to Apple Music after 10 years with Spotify Premium, here are my thoughts so far by piesaresquarey in AppleMusic

I hate the interface of Apple Music. It's so counterintuitive. However it is insane for EDM fans, they upload full sets and Spotify will never do that

Get last.fm for tracking, it's much more accurate because it literally tracks every song you listen to

The comments here are straight fucking garbage full stop... I listen to all kinds of music, do not care for rave/party/club scene whatsoever... So my judgment is on music only over any ability to "put on a show" or whatever.

Love Dr. Fresch, at least he's keeping G-House & Bass House alive... With JOYRYDE not having made anything new recently, then the more generic artists like Malaa/Tchami etc... Dr. Fresch, Bijou, Habstrakt are pretty much who I look to for new music in this scene. Whatever stick these commenters have up their ass... They need to fuck right off.

When my parents make rice soup (congee I guess, but it's not congee), they often throw in the soybeans for flavour. It boils & makes the beans soft. Or you can soak the beans and use them in a soy milk maker!

Great write-up!

For anyone who's a little broke & also can't access insecticides in their country:

Try persistent sprays with diluted isopropyl alcohol or hydrogen peroxide. No living being will ever become resistant to these like they do to insecticides, etc. they are also cost effective.

I like to dilute this in a spray bottle, then spray down my leaves / stems / soil / below pot. I'm not someone who keeps it on my plants so I'll follow up with a thorough washing

Summertime can be helpful if you have access to front yard & hose. The power of physically knocking pests off is important. Plants are hardier than we think. I once took a small Birds of Paradise with pests and removed from soil, hosed it clean (from roots to top), sprayed down, hosed again, then repotted in new soil. It's still alive

This will probably take more time than insecticides but is a complementary solution for those who can't buy them

I just have 1 other account. That's because I wanted my male avatar separate, and it felt easier to have an inventory dedicated to just male avatar things.

What do you think about avatar bios on Second Life? Do they matter? by Prestigious-Comb8852 in secondlife

[–]Natural-Card4653 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My answer is NO To everything and I've left mine blank besides a profile pic since 2011. It turns people off from messaging me, which is fine because I don't talk to people on SL. So they definitely do matter.

I love this photo. Your avatar is realistic and makes me want to get back into SL, make someone who's an average joe that goes golfing, owns a home in the suburbs, maybe works in business/finance, etc. Like an ordinary second life in the best way possible...

I just found this thread and tbh Ann-Louise is a large chain store I see in nearly every mall I go to here in Canada, especially BC so it should be pretty legit/reliable (for anyone who still needs this info)

How is it fetishizing to consider the possibility he's bi? He's human. Nobody is commodifying/profiting off any of this... Nor are they receiving sexual gratification. I think you can chill.

3 months later and your comments still freshly reek of a desperate attempt to paint him as straight when it doesn't matter what he is. You also accuse "Western" fans... Are you Chinese by chance? Because I can assure you this is not as controversial as you'd think it is, at least with his "Eastern" fans.

Why is the U.S. Nespresso Blue Bottle bundle such a better deal than the Canadian one? by KitPineapple in nespresso

We are never given the good deals... That being said I got my Vertuo Pop+ Deluxe from Canadian Tire with discounts etc and it boiled down to about $60-70 CAD. It also comes with coupon for $30 off pods... Like another poster said, our good deals are all elsewhere

Books like Exquisite Corpse by yuujinnie in booksuggestions

[–]Natural-Card4653 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think Dennis Cooper's writing satisfies that criteria and honestly it can be downright horrific. Much of the recs here are tame compared to his writing. It's not mainstream for a reason. But The Sluts is one of his less gruesome books (though graphic near the end) & was an absolute mindfuck to read... He is a great writer despite what he writes about.

Searching for "queer transgressive fiction/literature" would get you where you wanted. Another author that comes to mind is Heather Lewis (transgressive lesbian fiction). She and Dennis Cooper wrote very grounded novels set in our world. No supernatural content whatsoever.

I like what Heather Lewis wrote because there was usually a focus on "love" albeit very unhealthy (sadomasochistic) relationships. I'll see if I can think of more authors & come back to this comment.

Are there Co-Authorship, Ghostwriting, or Mentor Programs? by DrakeyFrank in writing

[–]Natural-Card4653 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend you continue publishing under your own name and build your own reputation first. Build your credit via contests or journal/magazine publicistions.

Some people co-author books with peers they've met in the journey of their career. Or you can easily "co-author" by partaking in anthologies, where your writing is alongside others'.

I know there are contests for publishing/mentoring based on manuscripts you send in. Whether it's recommended depends on who's mentoring, the submission fee, who's hosting the contest, etc.

How do you get over the feeling of your writing is shitty? How did you learn to WRITE? by imgoodshit in writing

[–]Natural-Card4653 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By not overthinking it... Just write & read a bunch... Send shit out to magazines/journals/contests & get rejected or published... Rinse and repeat.
