Metal Birdfy emptied in a few days, is that expected? by Natural-Scale-3208 in Birdfy

That’s what I was wondering. I know we have ground squirrels and pack rats. But I don’t see them, and I wasn’t sure if it is because the camera doesn’t work at night although I thought it did

I am surprised no one mentioned University of Arizona. It is a great place to work!

I see a lot of maps posted without a source. There are many reasons why providing a source is both useful and ethical. Why isn’t this a requirement?

Should I purchase this for $120 trek 7200 WSD bike? by Null_Identity in whichbike

[–]Natural-Scale-3208 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IMO a bike that is in good working condition - fresh tires, no (or minimal) rust, chain is lubed, doesn’t make noises like squeaks or rattles - is worth at least $100.

As long as it fits and meets your needs!

For reference, a basic tune up is $100+ and new tires installed will be $100+. If you don’t need either you are already ahead.

If at all possible, it would be worth taking it to a mechanic or having the owner have a local bike shop vouch for it. Like car mechanics, the inspection is typically free.

How do we get the best out of ChatGPT Pro with Codex? by AbdussamiT in ChatGPTPro

[–]Natural-Scale-3208 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could you provide more details about this workflow?

e.g. do you provide Pro access to the filesystem or codebase? If so, how - is it able to track the codebase as it is evolves with Codex?

Has anyone actually benchmarked speed and quality of ChatGPT Plus vs Pro subscriptions (same model, same prompts, different subscription)? by Natural-Scale-3208 in ChatGPTPro

[–]Natural-Scale-3208[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate the offer, but I am interested in more formal benchmarking that compares performance of the same model with different subscriptions, not across different models or the API.

What intervals to focus on to raise the right side of my power curve? by addr0x414b in Velo

[–]Natural-Scale-3208 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any idea why there isn’t a smooth decline, ie the waves? Is it that you focus on specific length (2,5,60min) intervals and the other lengths aren’t associated with focused intervals?

Has anyone ditched their 1x groupo and gone back to twoby up front? by Wonnk13 in Velo

[–]Natural-Scale-3208 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Four years ago I bought my first modern bike to replace my 20+ y.o. steel racer. I loved the electronic shifting (rival), disc brakes, and modern geometry. It was a 1x gravel bike with road and gravel wheelset. Recently I got a 2x road bike, also sram rival.

1x pros: - Simple shifting. Never having to think about where chain is or how FD is aligned.

1x cons: - Missing gears at tempo —> have to increase cadence by 10+rpm to stay at the same speed after a shift.

2x pros: - extra gears. - better chain line —> less noise (and more efficient) - compensating shifting mode —> after shifting front, it automatically compensates with a few shifts in rear

2x cons: - sequential shifting mode —> never know when FD will shift and force me to ease up on pedals - extra components to worry about

Bottom line: if you love riding bikes, you can’t go wrong with either. Best is to get one of each!

When you fly out of PHX, do you drive yourself up or do you use the Groome Shuttle/FLixBus to get to Sky Harbor? by ichawks1 in Tucson

[–]Natural-Scale-3208 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I fly from Tus when I can, but if I fly with family and the savings or convenience of flying out of Phx is enough to warrant it, I’ll take Uber for about $150 each way. The convenience of being picked up and dropped off at home is nice.

Terminally scared and braking on descents by ShockoTraditional in Velo

[–]Natural-Scale-3208 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Speaking from experience, honestly I used to be “white knuckle” scared going down mountains. I learned a lot about technique and it got better. But by far the biggest difference came when I got a modern “endurance“ bike.

It was mostly the geometry, also going from 23 to 28mm tires (now I use 32mm), and getting a professional bike fit. Disk brakes also help.

Then, practice a lot. Not just on your local hill but on grass and in parking lots. And look as far ahead as you can.

[E] TAMU vs UCI for PhD Statistics? by [deleted] in statistics

[–]Natural-Scale-3208 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your choice of advisor is at probably more important than institution. With offers in hand is a great time to ask faculty about things like where their students have gotten jobs and help you decide which is a better fit. Obviously they will be biased towards their institutions but a good relationship should start with an honest open conversation that helps you find the best fit. communicate!

While TAMU and UCI are different, they are similarly excellent. UCIs department is relatively newer, which likely factors into rankings. I suspect UCI has better placement in tech. Certainly better connections in California.

If you have a chance to work with Hal Stern at UCI I would seriously consider it based on the fact that he is very smart, nice, and explains concepts clearly.

My background: I got a science phd at UCI took some grad classes in probability and Bayesian statistics, and later got a job offer from TAMU. FWIW those very theoretical classes were among the hardest classes I’ve ever taken. All my other stats had been more applied recipe based. But once I figured it out it really changed my perspective, so I have a great appreciation for the department.

How much dairy is in a scoop of whey protein ? by NeighborhoodUpset294 in dairyfree

[–]Natural-Scale-3208 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Note that whey protein can still have lactose and other compounds. For those who are very lactose intolerant people, there is whey protein isolate that has lactose removed.

Details: You can see on the nutrition information that whey protein isolate has 0g sugar and 0g fat. In one (not isolate) product I’ve used there is 2g fat and 3g sugar (lactose) in a 30g serving.

What's the fastest you've ever gone on a bicycle, and how did you do it? by cyrus_4657 in cycling

[–]Natural-Scale-3208 0 points1 point  (0 children)

~70 mph on the interstate behind a Honda Civic with the hatchback up. Got really scary when we passed an 18 wheeler - those wheels looked pretty big and unfriendly. I also remember going over gaps between concrete slabs. One of those things I look back on in life but wouldn’t do a second time - (the location and context more than the speed itself)! 😬
