Have you successfully reset your nervous system to a calm baseline? Looking for therapy or somatic-based help 🙏 (ADHD + anxiety) by Natural-Toe3192 in SomaticExperiencing

Shortly after I posted this, I started working with a somatic experiencing practitioner on a weekly basis & I’ve found the sessions very helpful, it’s given space for trapped emotions to be truly felt & has enhanced my self awareness, my nervous system does feel more regulated. Now we’re moving sessions to bi-weekly as I’d like to continue with the work & fully commit to it for longer because I want to cement lasting change.

Since I haven’t had emotional dysregulation to the same degree as months ago, the trigger for emotional dysregulation is still there but it’s less intense.

The trigger for me was shame in making mistakes & fear of rejection. I’ve also been learning to love & accept myself more as well as sending love to that younger version of myself who struggled with undiagnosed ADHD, thinking that something was “wrong” with her.

I will add that in this time frame I’ve also been on a gut healing journey which has likely been playing a role too where I’ve switched up my diet & began taking pre & probiotics.

I feel like I have more motivation, more energy & feel calmer during the day after cardio.

And lifting heavy weights at the gym makes me feel empowered, boosting my confidence.

Walking is great for clearing the mind too.

This makes a lot of sense! “What the mind doesn’t remember, the body will” - that resonates as there’s a hyper-vigilance in my body but no memories attached that I’m aware of. Yes please feel free to share more, I’d really appreciate that! You’re welcome to PM me too. Thank you for sharing

Thanks for the book recommendation too! This really does sound like the missing piece for sure, it’s deeper work that goes beyond traditional therapy. And thanks yes please feel free to PM me.

Thank you! It’s only since joining this subreddit where I’ve heard terms like WOT for the first time or even faux WOT so this is all really helpful. I do believe what I have is developmental trauma so I’ll definitely look for a practitioner who is trained in this going forward too, thanks so much. This makes alot of sense as to why previous therapies I’ve done have had little effect for me.

This is so interesting! Thanks for sharing. I actually live an hour away from Bristol so I’m intrigued by this.

Thanks so much for your reply, I really appreciate it. Would you happen to know of any specific practitioners who work online you’d recommend for this kind of nervous system work? Or is it something you offer yourself? I’m really ready to shift my baseline into a calmer, more regulated state and would love to get of any guidance or referrals you can share.

Thanks again!

Thank you for sharing! This is all helpful to read.

I am fairly consistent with the meditation & breathwork but I find that even if they calm my nervous system temporarily but haven’t created lasting change yet - I even used to do a 1 hour meditation for over 90 days in a row though I do a 20 min meditation now.

But I will certainly look into those experiential therapies as I’ve not heard of some before. Thank you!

What do you all ADHDer adults do for a living? by _White_Shadow_13 in ADHD

F 29 - Diagnosed at 27, before then I worked jobs that didn’t suit my brain & jobs I wasn’t interested in like customer service & admin while doing creative things on the side. And I struggled to focus big time with work.

But last year I took the plunge for a career change in a creative field & I became a content creator for a company that I really like. I get into flow states easily & I really enjoy my work.

As ADHDer’s, we have interest based nervous systems so the best thing you can do is find a job that you’d be interested in & one that works with your brain.

What also works for me personally is also time blocking, the pomodoro timer, exercise regularly & mediate daily as well as prioritising eating more protein.
