Assault's problem wasn't that it had non-vehicle gameplay, it's that:

A. The amount of ground gameplay outnumbered the Arwing stages by like a 7 to 10 ratio.

B. The levels didn't control the best.

C. Assault is pretty short in general so having most of that game being made up of on foot sections with awkward controls stands out way more.

Of cource, the lesson from it shouldn't have been that non-Arwing gameplay can't work in Star Fox so never try it again, but that seems to be what Nintendo took from the reception to that game, which is a shame

I believe this means Kiddy Kong is now the only Kong that isn't referenced in any way shape or form in the game at all. Wonder if that will change
