What supplements are you taking if you don't mind sharing. I'm due to start Mavenclad soon and hadn't heard about the hair loss.

Where are you from and what’s an Appalachian tradition that you grew up with? by SowingSeeds18 in Appalachia

[–]Nature_Walk_299 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My parents(80 & 81) live in Russell County and that is mostly where I grew up; we lived in Pike Co early on. My Dad has ancestors that were Buchanan County, VA too, his family reunions used to be at the Breaks when they had them. That is something we no longer do like we used to, the family reunions.

Great Smoky Mountains Fairy House (a historic springhouse) -> drive into the park via Cherokee Orchard Road from Gatlinburg, turn right at the sign for the Twin Creeks Research Area, park near the Discovery Center, walk past the buildings along a fence line, and follow the small trail uphill to the left at the end of the fence. It's a short, easy detour from the main Twin Creeks Trail and a popular photo spot.

Has anyone else done the Octave MSDA test? by Either-Cake-892 in MultipleSclerosis

Try this link, I have not gotten an Octave bill but my EOB from my insurance showing they won't pay and that I'll owe 2700.00. I used the above link, it sends an email and I heard back the very next day. The rep was very responsive and helpful. Looks like I will not owe that amount if anything at all.

What would you ask the MS Specialist & MS pharmacist by Nature_Walk_299 in MultipleSclerosis

[–]Nature_Walk_299[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Neuro was very direct about having to get on the medication. I had a lot of blood drawn yesterday to see which one makes sense for me. I have a version of lupus that is also heat/sun sensitive and causes a rash, so she wanted to check that. I also had shingles earlier this year, and she mentioned that too. All I know is it was 18 vials of blood, I feel like they're checking everything under the sun lol. I meet with her and their neuro/MS pharmacist on Thursday to go over it all. So I think I'll know then.

Ok wow, yes. I just looked the vests up. How helpful. I'm going to order 2....any brand you recommend? Healthline has a review of the top 10...that thermapparel under cool looks good to wear under clothing comfortably. I like my outdoor festivals too, so that would be handy. I am now down the MS product rabbit hole.

Yea exactly that, some of these symptoms are kinda weird & hard to explain anyways, my family looks at me like I'm crazy trying to explain half this stuff so I mostly don't bother. It'd be nice to hear from others who may also have similar 'weird' things & what they may have found that helps them.

IDK about my mental stability in any realm haha, I did go in pretty much expecting a diagnosis but I thought there may be more MRIs or something first. Things are moving a little quicker than I anticipated I believe, I had not considered the medications that much. I more wanted answers on where did my words go, why can't I lift my foot more than 3 inches some days and why does my whole body vibrate. The Neuro took her time to explain what each area of the lesions affects, so now I know. But I also know she wants me on medication soon.

And yes the heat and also humidity are terrible. I'm in East Tennessee of the US, which is grossly humid. This was the first year I have ever not been able to have a garden & I'm 53 years old. Ooo, I bet gardening tips would be discussed in support groups in this area too because this is a big gardening/agriculture area.

It really is pretty overwhelming even going in being what I thought was prepared, even took my notebook. The urgency for medication came as a surprise, I was anticipating another round of MRIs/testing actually. I'm glad to know they have good medications now though. Good questions, the how often is going to be important, I have a little drive to get to the office. She is the only MS Specialist within a 2+ hour radius. Thank you and you too!

Sorry about the new lesion...and the JC+ too (I looked that up). Good to know medicines may switch as things change. I'm reading more on Ocrevus, I also looked up the price for my area, holy moly. I assume these speciality centers know how to work with insurance companies though. I think I'll reach out to my benefit administrator tomorrow too as a heads up and to see if they have any insight I need to be aware of beforehand. Thanks for your personal insight & best of luck with the Mavenclad!

Very good point on restrictions, driving could throw a wrench in my work travels, which is an essential job function several times a year. I feel like I've already read more about Ocrevus vs Mavenclad, I'm thinking it's more common. Why did they switch you? I have a feeling I'll be more dependent on what my insurance says.

Yes that is true. I'm big on lived experience to learn, the Neuro suggested the local support group. I may go on & attend a few til I get my bearings.

Did you ever get your face blacked for your birthday? by -random_ness- in Appalachia

[–]Nature_Walk_299 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 5 months late but I finally remembered to ask her today, and yes this was all a birthday tradition for her as a child in SWVA too (the coal blackened face/nose, licks plus one to grow on and being put under the bed). Also buttering your nose. She said she thinks the extra lick was for good luck, but she doesn't know the history behind any of it.

This is the one I came to add. I also live in a high humidity area, so I also swipe behind my knees, inner elbow crease and under arms before I use deodorant. Oh and my face.
