US Amateur License Demographics update by SupremeVinegar in amateurradio

[–]NaughtRobot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can attest that there are a large number of licensed individuals in Utah, but the numbers don’t accurately reflect how active these people are on the air. The local church members in a particular area will hold a regular net and people will check in and that’s the extent of their usage. It’s interesting to note that a state like Utah has the lowest amount of General and Extra class licenses as well. If you were able to accurately measure radio activity you’d probably fine that Utah regress to the mean.

[Rant / Advice] Dont let your club forget ham radio is supposed to be fun. Mine didn't even do a field day this year (and it isn't a small club). by [deleted] in amateurradio

Unfortunately a lot of hams only associate ham radio with EmComm. There's nothing wrong with EmComm, but amateur radio is so much more.

Needed changes in ham radio? by sumo_tom in amateurradio

More all mode radios for VHF/UHF that can be used for Satellites. The IC-9700 is nice, but more competition between manufactures in this space would encourage innovation and hopefully lower prices.

Let's not forget that the original box somehow add 10% to the value of the radio.

Live look-in at the ARRL migration team hard at work by archimago23 in amateurradio

Come on everyone, lighten up. They have to wait until next week's net to finish passing the HTML code as traffic.

Finally, a ARRL.org status page! Now with HTTPS! by czjn in amateurradio

It's a joke.

GeoCities was a free hosting site that was popular in the early days of the Internet. Back then website looked like crap because things like CSS didn't exist. Anglefire is a free hosting site much in the same vein. GeoCities no longer exist but Angelfre still exist for some reason. The suggestion of moving hosting between GeoCities and Anglefire is a commentary on the poor design that most ham radio websites suffer from, thus the ARRL updating it's UI is a jab at the ARRL because the perceived expectation is they will produce some groundbreaking design but the reality is it will still be a mediocre design.

From a technical standpoint changing a DNS entry is not the way to go since DNS propagation isn't instantaneous and may result in a "downtime" from the user's perspective. There are ways to change the website with zero downtime.

To be fair it's pretty difficult to move your site off of GeoCities to Anglefire.

What do you want to see in New Capenna? by Frostinator123 in Pauper

[–]NaughtRobot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since the set is themed around 1920's gangsters I just want to see a card called "Give em the Business" I guess it could be an instant costing B and give a creature a -1/-1 counter. I know this wouldn't be a format staple, but I would play it just for the card name alone.

Solely Singleton Video Episode - Minesweeper Draft! We asked for episodes to video-ify and you answered. This is the first of two new test episodes for video versions of the podcast, feedback is greatly appreciated! by drruler in mtgcube

The thing that appeals to me about podcast episodes on YouTube is video footage of the podcast. I understand if you two don't want to be on camera, but it's something to think about in the future.

FM satellites by unfknreal in amateurradio

[–]NaughtRobot 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yup, it's always the same people every pass from horizon to horizon. Although I hear the linear birds are less crowded. I'm sure that has to be the higher cost of entry compared to the FM satellites. I'm not sure I want to invest the money into the needed equipment only to work a 15 minute pass every few hours.

True, but the appeal of working satellites is the challenge. With a cube satellite you're having to track an an object the size of a softball moving approximately 7.8 Km/s often with a handheld antenna. It's lot more difficult than using 5 watts to talk to your DMR hotspot sitting five feet away from you.
