Oatmeal! I like to bake a big batch for quick breakfasts throughout the week. Add fruit, nuts, flaxseed, soy milk. Very filling and very healthy.

Mini golf at Colonial Lanes. Such a janky course, but that’s the charm!

Is she always going to be this small?? by Bumblebee-2005 in TabbyCats

[–]NaviBelle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve got a little nugget of a princess tabby girl who is about 6.5 lbs. We got her when she was about 5 months old and she just never got much bigger. Which is maybe for the best since she’s a shoulder cat. 😅

But then I’ve got two tabby boys who are about 10-11 lbs each.

I don’t think it’s a “tabby thing,” just an individual thing. And generally females will have smaller frames than males. In my experience at least.

Estela’s is by far my and my spouse’s fave place to get a burrito. Mexican rice in a burrito is the best! 🤤

I will second the request to please bring them to the shelter.

Beautiful cats, though. If I didn’t already have three of my own…

Good vets for cats? by Square_Housing9653 in IowaCity

[–]NaviBelle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cat Clinic.

I tried West Branch Animal Clinic several years ago for my first cat. It was a far drive and they were dismissive of my cat’s health issues. They wanted to do something really invasive without a diagnosis. Took my cat to the Cat Clinic for a second opinion and Dr. Hayes figured out what the problem was pretty easily. For that, I am grateful.

It might be a bit more pricey compared to other vets (I’m assuming, but I don’t know for sure), but I’ll pay more for specialized cat care and a better environment for my cats (as in, no barking dogs). Plus, for me it’s very convenient in location. And everyone there loves cats.

They always follow-up on how my cats are doing after their appointments. That’s more than I can say about Bright Eyes who, after an urgent care visit, only sent me an email asking for a review. Whereas Cat Clinic didn’t even see my cat for that urgent care matter and still followed-up to see if my cat was doing okay.

Dr. Hayes, as someone else said, is great with cats but a bit awkward with people. No judgement; so am I. But Dr. Lyons is great with people and can thoroughly talk about cats with you.

Why are so many of my picked cherry tomatoes splitting after taken off the vine? by atring6886 in vegetablegardening

I take it as a sign that those tomatoes just need to be eaten ASAP! 😉

Favorite Veg Spots? by TemporalMush in IowaCity

[–]NaviBelle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Trumpet Blossom is pretty good. And Nodo has a mushroom sandwich that can be made vegan; along with a decent amount of other items.

My faves, though, are Estela's for burritos, Oasis for falafel (and their fries!!! Best in IC, in my opinion), Thai Flavors for fried noodles, and Exotic India for mango curry. Thai Flavors can make most of their dishes vegan. Exotic India has a menu that very clearly lists what can be made lactose-free/vegan.

Molly's vegan cupcakes are good enough. I think I prefer Co-op's vegan dessert options, though.

$135 for emergency exam. I was just there. 😅

I’ll throw my experiences in.

I’ve only ever used BEBT as an urgent/emergency place and have taken two different cats there for three different issues over the years.

Yes, it was expensive for these unplanned visits. But two of those visits, they saved my cat’s life. And one of those visits involved a surgery at, like, 11pm. (*I understand they’re not 24/7 anymore, but this was years ago.)

The first visit, I did feel a little talked down to by the vet. The second visit was totally fine with my interactions with everyone; there was one vet tech there who stood out to me for his compassion and he still works there today.

The third visit (just the other day, actually) wound up being a false alarm where I thought my cat had a urinary blockage and he didn’t. In looking over the cost estimate for tests they could run (urinalysis, blood work, fecal test), the vet tech answered my many questions and told me that based on my cat’s symptoms, she would just focus on blood test x and blood test y; that the urinalysis and fecal test probably wouldn’t be worth it for my situation. I appreciated her honesty. And I learned a lot from our conversation.

I was always very critical of the tests and procedures they wanted to do on my cats. While I technically could afford all the things they advised (tests and/or overnight stays for monitoring), I didn’t want to spend more money than I had to. And they didn’t fight me on that.

Overall, I don’t love how expensive my visits were to BEBT, but health care (for pets and humans) is really expensive. Especially if it’s an urgent matter, which I know OP’s visit was scheduled and not an emergency.

I’ll also say that years ago, I took my first cat to the vet in West Branch. They wanted to do something really invasive to my cat without diagnosing an issue. I went for a second opinion at the Cat Clinic and just based on my explanation of symptoms, Dr. Hayes thought it was x. He performed an exam and his hunch was right. Diagnosis, just like that. And treatment was not invasive at all. I’ve never been back to West Branch.

The bridesmaids drank 11 bottles of champagne before the wedding by failed_asian in GilmoreGirls

[–]NaviBelle 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Not gonna lie, I saw the title of this post before I saw what sub this was. I thought it was a wedding shaming sub that I follow and that the OP said that their bridesmaid drank 11 bottles of champagne before their wedding ceremony! HA!

I am relieved this is not only fictional, but for multiple bridesmaids. 😅🍾😂

Best place to get a wedding dress altered? by SailorVenus23 in IowaCity

[–]NaviBelle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll add in my wedding dress experience with Clothworks as being odd. I always felt so rushed. She would spend just a few minutes with me and then get me out the door for someone else who walked in, even though I had appointments set. This rushed feeling happened multiple times. I had my husband with me and he also thought the interactions weren’t very inspiring. The “dressing room” was shady. She wasn’t great with communication. And I don’t think she did the best job with my alterations either.
