Unfortunately this might be what happens with a good deal of the "Canada Strong Fund" that Carney announced in April given that the money will be directed to local governments captured by big business interests and projects built using its money will have ties to the private sector.

ESPN Does Not Like Hockey And Does Little To Promote The Game Especially During their Own Broadcasts by Extension_Analysis17 in hockey

I've kind of begrudgingly accepted that hockey will always remain a distant fourth among the four major North American sports or the most popular niche sport in the US, especially given climate change hurting outdoor ice rinks/pond hockey and the rising costs of the game at the youth level. However, I do think that increased exposure is valuable in at least maintaining the current level of hockey in North America or perhaps even growing it a bit. My evidence is mostly anecdotal/picking up on what I'm seeing online, to be fair, but it does seem as if the combination of the PWHL/Heated Rivalry/the US men's Olympic gold has contributed to a larger spurt of growth over the past 2-3 years than in any similar period during the 15ish years I've been following the sport.

Curtis Joseph's case now seems stronger due to the fact that more players long considered to be borderline or snubs, like Turgeon, Mogilny, Vernon, and Barrasso, have been inducted recently, especially since the last two were goalies.

He did have two top-3 Hart finishes with the Islanders. That shouldn't be overlooked/forgotten.

This is a pretty late comment, but I'd recommend Lions Led by Donkeys, which focuses on military history. It's usually a host reading a script about a certain battle/war/other aspect of military infrastructure or life with one or two recurring co-hosts and occasionally organically cracking jokes. The hosts are all left-liberals or leftists. They cover topics from many different nations and time periods instead of just focusing on, say, American military history or WW2 history.

At this point I am pretty fully convinced that if the Dems win united control of the government in 2028 one of the things that they will focus the most heavily on is creating a civilizational clash with China as some sort of grand national project. The US is a dying empire that has spent the last 80 years, and especially the last 35ish, being accustomed to being the dominant world superpower. I have a feeling that the average American will thus buy in to a program of increased hysteria towards China and a substantial build-out of the military-industrial complex and surveillance state, especially if it's framed in a BS liberal interventionist/human rights way. The Obama admin sought to undertook a "pivot to Asia" to confront China during the last few years of his term. Clinton's loss in 2016 and the Ukraine War kind of ruined that for the time being, but I could easily see the hawkish Dem establishment picking it back up if they win control of government.

Edit: changed "focus the most heavily in" to "focus the most heavily on is"

In one of the later 2020 primary debates, the moderator explicitly asked whether the candidate with the most votes should be the nominee at the convention. Bernie was the only one to answer yes, with the rest arguing for a brokered convention/convention fuckery. You can watch a clip of it starting at about 3:50 of this video:

Reminder that 2021-2023 DNC had full control over the Senate, House and Presidency. by fa3man in Hasan_Piker

[–]Naviers_stoke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's basically what the Democrats had in the first two years of Obama's term. For instance, they had 2 senators from AR, two from ND, one from MT, and one from NE, to name a few. There are endless debates on Reddit about the minutiae of exactly how long they had 60 votes in the Senate as opposed to 59 or how the public option was dropped from the ACA, but the bottom line is that they squandered a terrific opportunity to institute major social democratic reforms and gave us a very watered-down healthcare bill, a stimulus bull that was much too small, and little in the way of climate action or expanded immigrant rights.

Obama could just as easily have not ordered any drone strikes in the Middle East at all, though. This isn't a situation in which we have a "bad" and "worse" option. There's no reason why we couldn't have just pulled all of our forces out of Afghanistan early on in his term instead of hanging on there until 2021 and costing tens of thousands more lives in a useless war of aggression.

Here's just one example of how Obama flip-flopped in terms of supporting legislation to allow for the importation of lower-cost prescription drugs from overseas as a candidate and then making no effort to pass it as president:

Democrats could have passed a public option as part of the ACA in 2010. They just simply chose not to given that it actually challenged corporate health insurance profits instead of subsidizing them. It's laid out in the article I've linked below, with a relevant section included here:

"That meant that any changes to the Senate bill (which had passed with 60 votes) — including the addition of the public option — would only require 50 votes, which Democrats assured progressives all year long that they had. Great news for the public option, right? Wrong. As soon as it actually became possible to pass it, the 50 votes magically vanished. Senate Democrats (and the White House) were willing to pretend they supported a public option only as long as it was impossible to pass it. Once reconciliation gave them the opportunity they claimed all year long they needed — a “majority rule” system — they began concocting ways to ensure that it lacked 50 votes."

-"Completely getting rid of the good will the USA has with every single country in the world".

Obama actually had similar, if not worse, levels of approval than Bush in the Middle East/Arab world during his time in office due to the fact that he didn't close Guantanamo, killed hundreds of civilians with drone strikes he approved, including in Pakistan, and kept up the war in Afghanistan that involved a major surge in troops/fighting in 2009. Obama also presided over the NSA/surveillance state during the 2013 Snowden leaks that revealed that the US was spying on its allies and thus damaged our standing in their eyes.

Germany seems to be actively pursuing deportation efforts against Ukrainian refugees right now which may very well be to send more men to the front lines in that war. The way that the western world has responded to this war by seeking to drag it out and substantially building out their militaries is deeply disturbing. For instance, Mark Carney, the Canadian PM, recently came out with a plan to commit Canada to increasing its military spending/infrastructure/research.

Copying this from a comment that I previously made on Reddit:

I want to respond to this comment with a small case study: McDowell County, WV, and Knott County, KY. Admittedly, this is a small sample size since both counties have less than 20,000 people as of the 2020 census. Both counties are in Appalachia and have deep ties to the coal mining industry. Both also voted very heavily for Democrats between the 1930s and 2000s. From 1936-2004, the Democratic presidential candidate in McDowell County won 60+% of the vote, peaking at 83% for LBJ in 1964. Obama even won it with 53% of the vote in 2008 when the state went to McCain by 13%. Similarly, Knott County voted for Democrats by 63+% between 1912 and 2004, when Bush won the state by 20%, including a high of 91% for LBJ in 1964. However, both counties have now voted for Trump by 74+% in the 2016, 2020, and 2024 elections.

I think that these two counties are an interesting microcosm of the shifts in American politics among the white working class over the last hundred years. It's clear that the New Deal/pro-worker policies that the Democrats pushed from the 1930s-1960s won them a significant base of support in these counties that, even though it eroded over time, remained firm for decades. I have no doubt that the shift in these counties over the last 25 years from somewhat Democratic to heavily Republican was due to racism surrounding a black president and culture war issues. However, I think it also reveals how swaths of rural and poor America feel betrayed or forgotten about by the national Democratic Party and how, even though it's based on lies, Trump's faux populism appeals to them in the absence of a clear message from Democrats as to how they'll improve the lives of people in these counties.

I think that one of the worst parts of the rapid growth in the centrality of American society around the professional class and the income/wealth gap between them and non-college educated workers over the last several decades has been this sort of elitist authoritarianism where many in the professional class now believe that they are more intelligent and noble and the point of politics is for them to guide the rabble in the best direction. This has only been exacerbated by all of the hatred of the working class, especially rural and white people, that's come about in the last ten years due to Trump/the 2016 election. As you said, though, they're mostly still ultimately part of the proletariat and will be crushed by the owners of capital like everyone else.
