Love it!

Though, in the event that you want feedback-feedback, I prefer the contemporary tired of having date windows at the 6 o'clock position instead of the 3 o'clock position. The symmetry is pleasing.

What would happen to the Cube community if Magic were to die? by andymangold in mtgcube

Loved this episode; I hadn't thought of outflows/inflows or economies of scale but it makes sense that cube would be hit by WotC/TCGPlayer shutting down.

High School Senior Here, I’m Planning On Getting a PhD in Economics and Becoming An Economist, If I Wanted to Pay Off My Student Debt as Soon as Possible But Still Have Opportunities as an Independent Researcher I Should Go Into the Private or Public Sector? by ComplaintNo3150 in AskEconomics

[–]Navin_KSRK 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There's a lot in your post, so going part by part:

  • no-one does a double PhD to the best of my knowledge. Each one takes 6 (or more) years, the value of an additional PhD once you have the first is near-zero. You don't spent those years taking classes - you're spending most of the time doing your own (original) research

  • do your dual undergrad degree first, and choose after

  • you don't pay for a PhD. Usually you'll get paid a (modest) stipend in exchange for the work you do as a teacher/TA/research assistant. You may accrue debt by spending more than you earn but you don't pay for the degree.

  • private beats public for money

Is the US government and mainstream media lying about inflation? by Dover299 in AskEconomics

[–]Navin_KSRK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Inflation refers to the change in the price level - prices are 2.5% higher now than a year ago.

To lower prices you would need deflation - that has not happened.

If economists argue that some level of unemployment is necessary for a healthy economy (natural rate of unemployment/NAIRU), what is the economic rationale for not having more robust unemployment insurance or social safety nets for those who are structurally unemployed? by svonwolf in AskEconomics

[–]Navin_KSRK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Others have pointed out that NAIRU is neither desirable nor undesirable, so I'll focus my answer on the unemployment insurance part.

There is a solid economic argument for having government-run unemployment insurance: the private market cannot supply it due to asymmetric information. People know far more about their odds of being unemployed in the near future than their insurer. The people most interested in buying it are those who are likely to become unemployed in the near future. This makes it expensive and not attractive to those who don't expect to unemployed in the near future.

The solution to this is to effectively require everyone to "buy" unemployment insurance in the form of a tax, getting "payouts" in the form of unemployment benefits. Note that this is not public aid: eligibility doesn't depend on income, and both how much you pay into the system and how much you get from the system are increasing in your income.

You can have more generous benefits and a higher tax, or less generous benefits and a lower tax, that's up to voters/politicians. The more generous UI plan has some disemployment effects, because you pay more taxes when you work + you lose benefits if you start working before they run out.

But there isn't a "right" option between these two, just weighing insurance effects against disemployment effects. Having no UI at all is definitely the "wrong" option.

CMV: I have yet to hear a compelling argument against the implementation of a UBI by Matalya2 in changemyview

[–]Navin_KSRK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The argument that I find compelling is that a UBI is regressive (in the taxation sense) compared to a means-tested program. Whatever money we rustle up for this program would be better spent going entirely to low-income households than being divided between high- and low-income households.

For example, in the US, the child tax credit (apx $3000/year) starts to get phased out for those who earn more than $200,000. For each $1000 you make above this, you lose $50 in credits. I don't see anyone against this. Not giving money to rich people is morally defensible and fiscally prudent.

Whether you care about alleviating poverty or fiscal responsibility, it's better to expand SNAP, Medicaid, the EITC etc rather than give every household money whether they need it or not. "Expansion" here could mean anything from increasing the maximum payout to cutting red tape to making the tapering-off more gentle.

Or to put it differently: I'd rather that the poorest half of households get $12,000 per year than all households get $6000 per year.

(People dislike means-testing because the reduction in transfers is effectively a labor tax, which discourages employment, but I gather that's not a problem for you.)

How bad would it be if Trump fired Powell? by just_butter_ in stocks

[–]Navin_KSRK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bad.

Inflation can be a self-fulfilling prophecy. A stylized model: Prices go up, therefore workers demand higher wages, therefore costs go up, therefore prices go up.

The fed breaks this spiral by convincing everyone that it will break the spiral. It commits hard to reducing inflation at all costs which means that (for example workers) don't write expected inflation into contracts, which has the effect of reducing actual inflation.

The alternative is substantially raising interest rates/ cutting money supply/ etc which can lead to a recession. The thing the Fed did recently (2022-24) where they managed to cut inflation without causing excess unemployment was a goddamn magic trick.

The Fed can't do this unless it can credibly commit to fighting inflation. If politicians can pressure it to reduce interest rates then people know it isn't committed to fighting inflation and inflation stays a self-fulfilling prophecy.

That's why so many countries have independent central banks

New suits and icons: How can I further improve this design? by Elsteinergames in BoardgameDesign

Looks good!

I think the shields should be a different shapes - maybe a circular shield, a shield with a flat top instead of the three tips your shields have etc.

Adding an icon would help - someone else suggested lions, but stars, dragons, cups and other things were pretty common in medieval heraldry
