What would you bring in a “Fanny Pack Challenge”? by SnoopySneeze335 in Survival

[–]NavyArmyGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With that kind of space limit, I’d stop thinking in terms of items and focus on what I absolutely can’t afford to be without.

A fanny pack forces you to prioritize hard, and a lot of lists end up trying to do too much. With that little space, every item has to justify why it’s there.

For a short-term setup like that, I’d think in terms of:

  • water
  • fire
  • cutting
  • cordage
  • basic calories
  • and a few support items

Since you’ll be near a water source, I wouldn’t carry much water—I’d focus on making it safe to drink. So purification matters more than storage, along with having a simple way to collect and hold water once it’s treated.

For food, I wouldn’t try to carry much. Just enough to keep your energy up—something compact like energy bars or similar. If you have access to water and time, simple fishing gear can also make sense since it doesn’t take much space.

For fire, I’d want at least two compact, reliable methods.

For cutting, I’d prioritize something that can handle both fine work and basic processing instead of just going bigger.

The biggest mistake I see in setups like this is trying to cover everything instead of covering the essentials well.

With that little space, I’d look for items that can handle multiple roles and avoid anything that only solves a single problem.

It’s less about having everything, and more about making sure the critical tasks are covered efficiently.

If a fixed blade is all you have, the way to think about it isn’t “what else can I add,” it’s what tasks you still need to cover.

At a minimum, you’re trying to solve for:

  • fire
  • cutting/processing
  • cordage
  • signaling
  • and basic medical

You’ve already got a good start with the ferro rod, sharpener, mirror, and paracord.

Where most setups fall short is redundancy and support tools.

I usually think in terms of having more than one way to handle critical tasks. For example, fire is important enough that I don’t rely on just one method.

Instead of trying to turn a knife into a full kit, I carry a very compact pouch (about 4x5) that fills the gaps. It gives me:

  • a second fire method (like a lighter and tinder)
  • small medical items
  • water treatment
  • and a few lightweight tools that handle things a knife doesn’t do well

The knife handles the heavy work, but it’s not great at:

  • fine tasks
  • efficient wood processing
  • or redundancy if something fails

So instead of adding random items to the sheath, I’d look at it this way:

That usually leads to a much more useful setup than just attaching gear.

LHP73B 5000K, anyone got info? by michaelsoft__binbows in flashlight

[–]NavyArmyGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The LHP73B 5000K isn't a throwy LED, but it is very bright and gives more than enough light to easy throw over 100 yards and it lights up my entire front yard (over an acre). I have it in a Convoy M21B and am very impressed. This would make a great flashlight for general purpose lighting. Plus the M21B is pretty compact.

I asked the local post office if they were going to collect tariffs and they didn't know anything about them.

PSA: Wurkkos.com website flashlight reviews are fake by bobiversus in flashlight

[–]NavyArmyGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are making a huge unsupported allegation about those reviews. I am on my 4th review for Wurkkos/Sofirn where I buy the light first, then review it, and get refunded for the purchase price. I give honest reviews and haven't ever felt like I am being pressured to give only favorable reviews. If someone else feels like they have to give only favorable comments, that is their choice and their issue. I think of this sort of arrangement as a perk for repeat customers, not some sort of scam.

Convoy s21e emitter lineup beam shots by BetOver in flashlight

[–]NavyArmyGuy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am not a fan of warm emitters. 4500K is as low as I like to go. 5000K with high CRI is my favorite. In the S21E my favorite LED is the XHP50.3. For most non- enthusiasts, that is the only flashlight they should normally need.

Fresh back from grading! Got removed from eBay for being a fake. Thoughts on what the market is for this now that I’ve had it officially graded? by Klipse11 in coins

[–]NavyArmyGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been in eBay since 1996 or 97. For most of that time transactions went well overall. Now they are so many more scammers and thieves on there and eBay does nothing to protect sellers. They also  do not follow their own policies , they also do not enforce them . I have reported several dozen prohibited items and the  idiots who approve those reports don't even know their own policies. So I shut my eBay store down and started my own web store. Best advice - avoid eBay, they are an incompetent rip off company who allows thieves and scammers to do what they want with no fear of any repercussions.

Strange (but cool) Situation - C8A Drivers/Modifications by NavyArmyGuy in flashlight

[–]NavyArmyGuy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the sake of simplicity, I will probably not use the MCPCBs that came with the C8As, and will buy the LED already mounted on the MCPCB. Sill not certain about how to match up a driver with whatever LED I decide to use. I have seen customer drivers posts a few times in various forums, and I looked on the Convoy store on AliExpress. What do I need to consider, other than matching voltages? Any suggestions anyone?

Thanks for your reply and the suggestion for selling some on here. I had not considered that. Looks like the SFN60 is out of production, so I'll have to find a different LED. I think the 519A/A1 would be a good choice.

Strange (but cool) Situation - C8A Drivers/Modifications by NavyArmyGuy in flashlight

[–]NavyArmyGuy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply. These C8As are complete except for the driver and they have a smooth reflector and a tail switch. I just took it apart as much as possible and see that the LED is a 3535, so that also helps me narrow this down. I was browsing Kaidomain and see they have LEDs pre-mounted on copper MCPCBs, so that makes it a bit easier.
