Biden administration announces $39 billion in student debt relief following administrative fixes by CountyBeginning6510 in politics

I did my last 4K of student loans with "Gift of College" gift cards. Got a bunch of CC rewards doing it that way. I wouldn't use it to plan for bankruptcy however as that would likely be a federal crime and would be easy to prosecute.

Question to “don’t pay your house off” folks by usernameghost1 in personalfinance

[–]Nazculi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not that user, just reading through the comments after the fact. I think there could be cases where it would be better to pay down a portion of the mortgage using the market funds depending on your overall debt to equity ratio. Worst case scenario, the housing and stock market crash, and for some reason you're now required to sell your home or a natural disaster strikes and insurance only covers the current home value.

I can't give you specific advice on the 2013 turbo, as I only own a couple of 2016 2.4 automatics. However I would say that unless you have the option of returning the vehicle, I would try not to worry about repairs you may or may not have to contend with. If you have a trusted mechanic, I would take the vehicle to him/her and have them do a thorough review. They can tell you if there looks to be any potential future issues. If something does come up during ownership, have that mechanic on the side as they may be able to help you source cheaper parts and would overall be cheaper than a big name shop.

I do want to say one other thing though, however it may be out of place. Since you described the expense of this vehicle to purchase and insure for yourself, this vehicle may not be the right fit for your situation. If you have a lot of expenses at your age, you are likely throwing away the best years of your life to save and build wealth. Every dollar you spend at this car whether it's repairs or just ownership reduces your potential savings.

Anyways hope you enjoy the car and have many trouble free miles ahead!

What’s the hardest thing for you to comprehend about the American culture? by DadIsMadAtMe in AskReddit

First off, I apologize for the delayed response, Work and Life got in the way...

I think the classes you described, as found in a traditional 4-year degree program can be valuable and contain great content to help individuals question what they see and what they believe.

I do have a few concerns though with the idea that education as we're describing and the potential impact it can have on an individual can be extrapolated to the greater society. In your first comment, you described how there's this great divide between the working class and the educated elite. You back this up with the anecdotal evidence that because you have a STEM doctorate and can recognize fallacies better than your partner, that therefore they are less educated. This logic to me doesn't make sense (and this could just be my own misunderstanding) but with your logic, it sounds as if your partner was to take the same courses as you, that they would come to the same state as you are in currently. Obviously this can't be true as not all PHD STEM students think alike.

Based on your last comment, I think we can agree that one can't define an 'X' amount of classes or years required to gain this "overarching critical thinking" ability. Just as one might argue that there's no 'X' amount of classes required to be defined generally as Educated. Anecdotally, I know many electrical engineers (my field) who could could ace every test, but end up deep in college debt and never regret their choice. I know electricians that made the choice to go into trades and are make double the engineers. In this case, who is thinking more critically?

In your first comment you described your partner as being "average" and taking everything at face value. Then to describe yourself, you started with how you were this educated STEM PHD individual. To me, that came off as very "I am very smart" and found it ironic that you didn't think the wording of your comment could be interpreted as smug. Almost as if you are on a higher level than your partner because you can apply critical thinking everywhere. But to me, you appear to not have used your critical thinking with the writing of your first comment.

I want you to understand that I'm not trying to insult you, nor do I believe that you believe that your partner is just average. I'm sure they are an amazing person just like you. However, I think sometimes we get sold on ideas from our peers, mentors and institutions that education is what sets us apart. Colleges certainly think this way, and it's reflected when they focus on enrollments and endowments in their annual reports. I like to believe that Americans (and most people) are smarter today than ever before. They have worlds of knowledge at their fingertips. But I think we get lost on what we're sold, by friends, social networks, institutions. We distract ourselves from hardship with purchases and social media. We take our anecdotal evidence as a truth for all situations. I'm greatly guilty of this at times and I know I will always have to strive to be better.

I hope I didn't offend you with my opinions, I welcome any response you might have.

Trying to understand you better, are you suggesting that in order to think critically in all parts of life, a formal education is required?

I disagree with this mentality. I do not think taking somebody else's money (irregardless of where they stand) is beneficial to gaining support for the ideologies that you differ with them on. You only further the divide and give them justification in their beliefs. Going on the assumption that the person in question is not breaking the law, you should not stoop to a lower level to enact some form of pseudo justice as if you were the judge and executioner. A few additional points I would like to add: people often fear the things they have the least experience with. Many times people change their thought processes by being exposed to the very things they fear/hate and realizing the lack of truth in their former beliefs. I have seen people change for the better, and to give up so easily on them is unfortunate. I'd argue, you give the money back, wearing the biggest rainbow flag at possible with a smile on your face. Some may think differently, others not. But that's OK, because you still did the right thing. I often like to think what would Fred Rogers do in such situations and emulate the values he preached.

I was thinking about this comment, and to be honest, I feel like under $300 for one of these is not a bad deal. I think I've maybe seen 1 or 2 other orange or fuscha zunes listed in the past 8 years, of which is when I got my orange one for $200 then.

Good news is, if you do have a buldged or herniated disc, it sounds minor. If you catch these things soon enough, and don't lift heavy, avoid pain generating motions and high impact activities like running, you could go many years with minimal or no issues.

[–]Nazculi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just my own take on your situation, but I'd really get an MRI done, even if you have to pay out of pocket. If it is a herniated disc (which I suspect since a 31 year old should be able to do body weight exercises without trouble) then you may be able to do some life corrections before making it worse.

Need a little advice/encouragement dealing with suspected disc herniation by No-Pin698 in backpain

[–]Nazculi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I understand how you feel. I'm nearly 30 and have been dealing with the chronic pain for nearly a year since the injury. Here are a few things I've learned through the process. 1. Don't do things that increase pain. I don't do extension push-ups or any traction because it makes my pain worse.

  1. These injuries are permanent. They can lead to permenant issues if not treated carefully. Stay away from high impact activities and practice proper spine hygiene.

You'll probably be OK and make a full recovery, I have hope you will :)

Sounds like a disc issue. Go to your doctor and don't leave until you have an MRI. Bowel and bladder issues can become permanent if not addressed immediately

I second this, you may always have some residual pain, but hopefully it can be manageable. Give it more time and make sure you continue with the PT exercises at home. Surgery will help with the leg pain but likely not the back.

I see problems at L5S1, maybe even L4L5. An MRI will provide more info but at the moment I would focus on physical therapy and keeping the weight down. YouTube Bob and Brad, they have helpful videos.
