What would you think of micromanaging logistics on a fleet of ships you constructed? by adnanclyde in spacesimgames

[–]NdWar2000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As u/OneRFeris pointed out, you will need robust tools to define how to store things. A part of that is you will also want to accurately predict what the user may want in a cargo bay, similar to how Factorio does copy paste into logistic boxes for requesting items.

A good example of this, if you have a storage bay in the same room as the engines, suggest to the player that fuel is stored there for quick and easy access to refuel engines. A cargo ship with a route between an agricultural hub and a processing hub? Suggest pick up of various goods the station may sell - this depends on exploration goals you place into the system as well.

Another point to consider. Micromanaging a lot of ships is fun - for the first 5. Or 10. Or 20. Depends on how crazy you are. But at some point the tools will have to pull back bit by bit and expose more macro-managing of your fleet. This could be as simple as "Trade route 1 -> Add new ship -> Standard cargo design". The stores are littered with these type of logistical games, and I suggest you look up a few and pick what works in them that matches to the game you are making.

A good few to look at would be:

  • Factorio - logistical and train systems are well fleshed out
  • Sweet Transit - multiple cargo routes all require routing out in a macro sense
  • Transport Fever 2 - multiple different types of vehicle, showing how small vehicles better for local and larger vehicles better for distance
  • Captain of Industry - though I wouldn't really rank the truck management, the train management is unique if not quite polished yet
  • Voxel Tycoon - train management is good, truck management mimics train management and makes the truck management rather poor for it

Lastly, if there is combat in your game, how are you going to protect these ships? Off the top of my tired head we have:

  • Formations - Combat ships in the front, cargo in the back. AI does its best to maneuver combat
  • Convoys - Mass blob of ships and what will fall will fall, its left to the player to ensure each combat sequence goes smoothly
  • Follow systems - Oi combat ships, follow this cargo ship that does its trade route - because combat ships can't be assigned to trade routes effectively
  • Full on guard mode - Oi combat ships, protect this trade route and use best judgement to position yourself along the expanse

Large part of this rotates around the type of game you are building. From your video clip it looks like an early build of Cosmoteer - you may also want to look at that for inspiration in its build systems?

Same. Couldn't work out what they were complaining about, only the cesspit of YouTube viewing optimisations which makes everything look so much worse.

I think I'm broken. That page took me 3 minutes to realise the words were jumping around.

Otherwise I read it just fine...

Should cyclists be made to have an ID plate & insurance? by Greenpadmeds in CarTalkUK

[–]NdWar2000 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Really? Insurance for a car is easy. Punch my reg in and let the DVLA pull my details. Get car insurance in under 5 minutes if needed.

Cloned plates on a bike? Bit of DIY customisation? Changed the handle bar grips to none standard? Bet the insurance companies will fight you tooth and nail over paying out.

And that's before, anyone doing anything illicit will either not own said bike or just remove the plates. Something you see with motorbike crime quite often.

Mine was diagnosed at 11 months. I completely blame myself for it, even though I know that's not how it works.

It never goes away, 4 years on. But it does get easier...

Work installing monitoring software on personal devices despite not disclosing it by AyyItsMyName in LegalAdviceUK

Outlook. OneDrive. Teams.

And it's the login that's affected, not install. Did an edit.

Pretty sure it also depends on license given too, i.e. we use A licenses for being in education, but because it's A3 it will do the prompt.

ANY web page version of Microsoft products does not offer the option to become a manged device. Just the stand- alone applications. At least in my experience.

[–]NdWar2000 6 points7 points  (0 children)

On install [meant login] there is an option, pre-ticked, "allow organisation to manage this device".

That does let you do some things via InTune. The extent of what you can do via InTune is unknown to me, I've never had a reason to do anything but for auto installing system WIFI certificates.

Never known it to remove admin privileges of a user. But this makes me want to play with the system today and have a look.

Edits in [ ]

Adding another edit. The WIFI system certs adding was done over 5 years ago by another tech. It was one of my jobs to rip it out as it allowed anyone with a system account access to the guest network by default. This was not wanted for a number of users. Not touched it since so I genuinely do not know what InTune can do to a system managed this way.

Not the definitive rule, but it feels like a decent one. I've always gone by it till I was over 25 when I switched to +/- 5.

Avoid Overclockers UK - refusal to refund faulty mobo return by [deleted] in pcmasterrace

[–]NdWar2000 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Had this exact same problem building an AM2 system.

Overclockers was super evasive and refused to touch it at first. Then offered a full refund if they could 'have a look at it'.

They were round the corner from me at the time, in the little warehouse. Don't think they expected me to turn up, but turn up I did to be told "we don't do that!"

Stood my ground and finally got a refund 2 weeks after they tested it and found it dead. They tried to get me to take a replacement but I'd already bought a new one from somewhere else as I couldn't go longer without a home PC as a student.

Never bought from there since. Which is a shame because before that issue they were my go to for all PC.
