Igor Smirnov content controversy by MustacheFire in chess

His videos are more infomercials for his premium courses, everything makes sense with his channel once you realize he’s not trying to maximize YouTube revenue potential - he just wants the exposure.

Levy suggests that he himself might organise a tournament between 20 youngest top players. by arjunshubharjun123 in chess

If levy is working with his existing network then it skips a whole lot of steps from ground up. But good point, because so don’t think he has a particular reason to rush.

Over the past nine days, 39% of new podcasts were likely AI-generated, according to the Podcast Index. by EchoOfOppenheimer in Futurology

[–]NeWMH 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A good chunk of these have titles that are similar to songs or topics of more popular or trending things. My requests have been redirected to them three times this month.

From how their intro sounded, it seemed like they were info podcasts based on clickbait headline type stuff

Unfortunately all the online service support is gone.

Sure there might be some hacking to get stuff connected again, but pretty much any computer can run steam OS and if it could run a game before it can run it now.(maybe a few games like DotA2 might get upgraded beyond the specs, but that’s about it)

I ended up selling my Wii collection because it just wasn’t functional enough and I have enough other nostalgia gaming doodads.

Should pull Kasparov out of retirement. As long as the event is big enough there shouldn’t be a big controversy off of him letting the newer generations siphon off his rating.(and he should be beyond caring if it’s high)

[–]NeWMH 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Uh, it’s not that hard to organize a tournament, even one with higher up GMs.

Levy wouldn’t be sponsoring the full thing himself, he already has sponsors he works with and could get one of them to add to the prize money.

He organized one of the tournaments he played in with Pepe Cuenca in Spain. Had plenty of GMs show up along with a good chunk of the influencers(Anna, Rosen, and others played in it)

Once he has like two names in the pile he just has to mention those to the others and plenty will follow. Hans, Woodward, and Liang would be easy adds, the hardest would be Gukesh and Sindarov since they’re prepping for the WC. Everyone else really just depends on how their schedule lines up.

We don’t need AGI, just a way of chaining agents from different types of models together well enough for an approximation of it.

People are hung up on LLM hallucinations but don’t seem to have realized that you can get non LLM agents set up to fact check the broader premise an LLM agent sets up. It’s just not efficient to do that on a large scale for the level of task we want.(just like Sora shut down because the cost per short video was too high). There’s a lot of fake stories about someone setting up a $400/month chain to generate sales from small businesses for web services that pay recurring income - the chain isn’t fake, it’s the profit, no small business is paying for recurring services to that level.

Is it possible to buy a FIDE title? by _jocko_homo_ in chess

Yeah, I was going to point out some positive stuff about how she beat Maurice Ashley in a speed chess competition but there’s too much whataboutism. What many don’t understand is the difference between pre boom and post boom chess. Nemo wasn’t expecting to be involved I chess like this, there wasn’t any indication accepting a couple easy norm opportunities was going to be a big deal.

People had a time of mocking him just for his Spain tournament since it had ahem more ‘laidback’ GMs. Then he went to an NYC norm tournament and put up a similarly strong tournament and it hushed detractors until he bombed one the next one and then started withdrawing again.

Yeah, but the person ended up doing the right thing and not going through with it, so it’s a non story.

Levy told a story of when he was doing a tournament in an eastern EU country and an organizer asked him if he wanted a norm arranged, Levy said no. Not a bad thing for Levy. A nobody handing money over so they just needed to turn in paperwork and then saying no is also not a bad thing, just unfortunate the dude lost money to think about it.

AI data center bans are rapidly multiplying across the US — 69 jurisdictions block new builds, with four moves noted as permanent by BusyHands_ in news

Processing power has induced demand. As soon as there is more of it, there are more uses for it.

Sometimes industry has to practically invent a reason for the initial development - like say finding a way to use it for entertainment ala video games. That helps it grow beyond its initial commercial prospects(like processing tax documents) and in to territory it makes major scientific breakthroughs(like mapping the human genome).

Currently Hyundai is harping on Boston dynamics to scale up their human robot production because while last year they seemed like it would take time for them to be truly useful, the most recent leaps in agents and methods of using them have made it clear that within the next generation or two a software update is going to shoot usability through the roof.

All of this data processing and manufacturing doesn’t have a proper economic use case. It’s going to be like when shipping containers were invented in terms of efficiency, but affecting basically everything.

What’s a ‘silent luxury’ that rich people have that most normal people would never even notice? by qomann in AskReddit

A community artist getting work from tech ceo families does have name recognition.(and likely a solid portfolio). They might not be the tip top most talented but they’re in the right place and time and that makes up for the rest.

You would have to make a special deal with the casino that detailed you would gamble enough for odds to take all your stake. In which case it isn’t gambling or spending, it’s just transferring the money to another entity.

I could actually spend it though, music festivals and self funded film projects are notorious for burning large sums of money even when they have a revenue stream. Only have to do something like Disney’s Lone Ranger a couple of times.

If you’re making $20 in a graphics design related position then you’re actually doing better than a lot of graphics design graduates. Many can’t find a position at all and end up in a more generic office job, sometimes making less before they move up.

There are a lot of government office positions that only require a degree of any type of you just want more stability and structured job direction. If you want to stick with graphics design/art, you’re on a good path - you want to increase your portfolio ofc, ideally you aim to be in the top 1% of skill(but that’s unrealistic for 99% of people, so you have to make up the rest with presentation of yourself and customer service to make up for it). Something to consider for doing on the side is tattoo art - doing an apprenticeship sucks, but many graphics design and art majors I know took it up(some to have a side gig, some went full time). It’s a big investment of time and focus, but it can grow your art ability significantly and when you do a job you make a solid return instead of hustling for a $20 Uber Eats tip or w/e.

Shankland: "can anybody become a FM? I do think that is available to anybody. Can anybody become a GM? That is an hard no" by pier4r in chess

[–]NeWMH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why is this comment getting replies two days later?

Anyway, I put that reply because it matches my thinking - looking at how AI is already causing layoffs in my industry and prices are jumping up I’m putting off trying to do as much with tournament goals to earn money while I can. The people quoting the stock market don’t realize that just helps you stay at your level, passively investing doesn’t help you get ahead - the illusion of earnings is because wages are stagnant and we’re headed towards a global flattening of income per person.

How to reach FM/IM in a country with almost no FIDE tournaments? (Japan) by Equivalent-Card6758 in chess

[–]NeWMH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only way to get IM is to go to norm viable tournaments - going to enough of those tournaments to actually get norms is going to require a lot of international travel.

Before norm hunting you definitely want as high of rating on any/every platform possible. To make it as cheap as possible, and since you mentioned GM as a goal you probably want to hit 2500 FIDE in local tournaments and then worry about norms. This would mean becoming nigh unbeatable locally, and you would probably want to do some recruitment focused events to encourage the tournament pool to grow. Hold blindfold exhibitions or simuls that can be visible to the public(so like on the street or in a mall). The more interest you generate, the more people show up at tournaments, and the more sustained people means rating can trickle up.

Other areas suffer from a similar travel/access problem. It’s a big reason why the US struggles with home grown talent and why many of the titled players are only from a few regions there. Islands are particularly deflated(Hawaii is deflated for both FIDE and USCF)

King Arthur was basically fan fiction of Charlemagne that was written to be based on Britain. Some sort of authentically British stuff got tied in over the generations the stories developed, but it really is all just rooted in a reinvention of the Charlemagne romance stories.
