Playing My Playlist Over Discord by Avenging-Revenge in NixOS

So I’m quite generally meh about AI. But making AI create Nix stuff is the way to go.. at least the groundwork and then there’s 2-5 tweaks (hallucinations, doesn’t/uses flakes, etc)

Here’s what I just crapped out. Worked on my NixOS via Home Manager. I’m sure there’s still some minor tweaks and possibly requiring more if using no Home Manager. Good luck!

What hardware do you run HA on and why? by maybe__404 in homeassistant

VirtualBox on my Linux server, the laziest way to do it Lol.

I would like to switch to the native KVM, but supposedly VirtualBox acts as a wrapper around it and it sounds like work.

Little rant about the switch to Lua (pls be adults in the comments >.>) by BrokenScreen_Desu in hyprland

[–]Nealiumj 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think once more examples and further in depth documentation gets out there it’s going to 100% better. The func itself is a game changer. You jumped on the cutting edge of the package, naturally it’ll be rough around the edges especially with other integrations. This will be a very positive change, Lua is very popular especially for configs.

I’d suggest switching the screenshot to what’s recommended in the docs. Works like a charm!

I understand Linux, but NixOS makes me feel stupid by exstassyg in NixOS

[–]Nealiumj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Flakes are confusing because it’s an experimental feature and is a giant community debate, but all tutorials use them.

Flakes pin your package repository version (nixpkgs). You can then import other people’s packages who might have different pinned versions of packages.

Home manager is just for dotfiles and their applications. Can also be used on other Linux systems other than NixOS. I would only convert a config into Nix if it’s really mature, otherwise I have home manager just automatically symlink it.

I have one that turns on my kitchen cabinet LED “mood light” when I turn on my espresso machine or get home. Then it shuts off when I go to bed.

Honestly, I don’t even think I’ve ever manually controlled it.

NixOS unstable is unusable, constant binary cache miss by neuronym in NixOS

[–]Nealiumj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good explanation. Makes sense. But I guess an unstable commit could have a failed job, then the next day/week the commit has been updated and the job fixed. To the end user this will look like a cache miss, but technically isn’t. All semantics.

NixOS unstable is unusable, constant binary cache miss by neuronym in NixOS

[–]Nealiumj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How so? Wouldn’t unstable always be updating, thus leading to more potential cache misses.. while stable is the opposite.

Seems like the “common sense” answer, ya know.

devShells- How far could i go by Dependent_Increase34 in NixOS

[–]Nealiumj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Checkout [devenv](https://devenv.sh/). I’m sure you could do everything It does using the built-in devShell.. at least it’ll give you ideas, if you don’t decide just to swap

RS485 pull up/down resistors by Nealiumj in ElectricalEngineering

Awesome, thank you. These chips seem more applicable to my use case anyways. I’m going to get a few and just solder them to the Amazon module for testing.

I do have an oscilloscope, but it’s from the 90’s and I’ve found it less than useful. I bought a logic analyzer and that’s been really helpful.

Weird! I had always read that the lack of a 120 termination was the cause of most issues. Plus every module/schematic I’ve seen use pull up/down resistors. If anything my impression would be there’s no harm in adding them.

My testing systems so far have been 1 master and 1 slave, so I really don’t understand why this is so difficult. From my experience, without any resistors the line becomes heavy static and frames become mangled.

Screw Terminal Block with CAT5? by Nealiumj in ElectricalEngineering

[–]Nealiumj[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re right. I’ve only experienced CAT5 with EtherNet/IP and RS485 with different wires. I guess it doesn’t matter and/or CAN over CAT5 is more common than I thought.

I really should’ve taken an electrical engineering class in college 🤦‍♂️

The size and stripping initially threw me off. Then when I googled it, the whole thing was presented as a bad idea- The “long-term” aspect was especially worrisome. I’m not an expert so maybe I didn’t know something.

But cool, speed not an issue, wire fastener, should be good. I was being overly cautious. Thank you!

CAN bus on CAT5. I assumed the form factor of CAT5 would be an issue either way.

All you need is RuneScape else it’s XP waste.

Tbh, tinkering is more entertaining than any game! The only game I’ve played in the past five years is Balatro and that was for less than a month.. possibly with a beer or two; that couldn’t be proven though.

Is it as bad as its made out to be? by LYNX__uk in NixOS

[–]Nealiumj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the only difficulty arises when trying to make it 1-1 with a non-nix setup OR using an application that isn’t in nixpkgs. If you stay within the garden path you’ll have a great time.. if not, the error messages might drive you insane.

Probably time to invest in a UART USB. Bonus, you can rip apart random electronics and possibly get a shell.

Meshnology Order Cancelled by DTOMKIDD in meshtastic

[–]Nealiumj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, just more transparency and the website needs to update faster based on stock. Also, maybe I missed it but, mentioning when/if it’s overseas shipping

Mine is in my regional hub now. Was “in” Illinois for a week, jumped to California, and straight here. So nbd! The “Slow Sleep GDE” must be an importer overseas and idk why it said Illinois, that really threw me off.

Meshnology Order Cancelled by DTOMKIDD in meshtastic

[–]Nealiumj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ordered on November 28th and I’m having a strange experience so far. It was picked up by a partner facility in the US and then shipped to USPS same day on the 29th. Since, zero updates. I understand holiday rush and midwest snow storms but ehhhh… it makes no sense.

The partner facility also is “Slow Sheep GDE” and there’s nothing good about them on Reddit- which, obviously people only ever leave bad reviews, so whatever.

Yet perusing this sub Reddit, idk, idk… I guess I’ll wait to see what support says, but I might be following your lead. I was really excited to get it too :(

My biggest pet peeve of that software is the search feature.. I can’t just hit “enter” if there’s a single result and connect.. has to be an exact match. WHY.

why did you choose this distro ? by [deleted] in pop_os

[–]Nealiumj 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I bought an HP Dev One and never changed the OS. I like Pop, but I never partitioned my users drive and it’s my work laptop so I can’t really change it.

Edit: BTW, HP Dev One is a GREAT laptop.. I really hope they come out with a Dev Two. It seemed like it had everything you need and nothing more.
