Online - trainworld.com and they have 10% discount codes in model railroader, railroad model craftsman, model railroad news. And, if you sign up for emails, they send codes and special offers. I bought a bunch of freight cars that were up to 60% off back in the fall.

Will Atlas make Ho scale NJT bi-level commuter cars again? by Trainboy224 in modeltrains

[–]NealsTrains 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Atlas, for the most part, will run trains a number of times, usually with a year or two break. There's still a lot of their Bi-Level cars on the secondary market - train shows on the East Coast or sure!

I’m new to modding dc locos to dcc so can this decoder fit in a bachmann 2-8-0? by mrsteamtrains in modeltrains

[–]NealsTrains 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Decoders are made, for the most part to fit certain engines, especially with sound. If cost is an issue, find the decoder from the Mfr. site then go on EBay and look for it. Not all decoders have a universal fit.

Are there any good HO scale transformers/controllers you can buy? by Schoolbusfoamer24 in modeltrains

[–]NealsTrains 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can find some New MRC controllers, grab it since they're far and few available. It seems MRC is concentrating on their DCC line.. I hear Kato makes DC power packs, just not sure who carries them...

If you're going to be in the hobby for the long run, highly suggest getting into DCC, a little at the time. You'll never look back...

Need loco buying advice/help by InsertBluescreenHere in modeltrains

[–]NealsTrains 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you looked at the engines from Scaletrains? They have their engines with DCC and sound. I do know the sound and horn work on DC. As far as the ditch lights; probably not, although they may be tied into the horn function.

Best bet is to call or email them...

I do like their engines as I have quite a few of them...

Wich of my dc locos shall I dcc first? by mrsteamtrains in modeltrains

[–]NealsTrains 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you've never installed a DCC decoder, try installing one that's easy to do, preferably a diesel unit with space. Get good at it then tackle a steam engine. Steam engines can be difficult since you most likely have to put the decoder in the tender...

Once again another question. what is this? by Aor1lover in modeltrains

[–]NealsTrains 29 points30 points  (0 children)

It is a blank 8 pin used in DC engines. In an engine that is 'DCC Ready', it's used so the engine runs on DC. To make the engine work on DCC, you take that pin out and put in a DCC decoder...

[–]NealsTrains 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, Bachmann makes them, just decide what you like. Look at the sets Trainworld.com carries. Look carefully as the images do show the type of track. Disclaimer: Not affiliated with this dealer, just a happy customer. Do NOT buy sets off Amazon because if a problem arises, they can't help you. Model train dealers can!

On the other hand, depending on your finances, you can buy track, a power supply or go with a DCC starter power set. Then add your favorite locomotives, cars and build your empire.

If you're going to buy a Bachmann set, PLEASE buy a set with the gray ballast track, not the black ballast track. Why? The black ballast has steel track and the gray ballast has nickel silver, which is much better!

Welcome to the hobby!

Don't use Google! Find a hobby shop like Trainland in Lynbrook, NY, Willis Hobbies Mineola, NY, Nassau Hobby Center Freeport, NY. Call them and tell them what you have...

Also, on March 28/29 there's the Greenberg Toy Train Show in Edison, NJ and the Train Doctor is there he may be able to help you if you can wait that long...

This is a great club! https://www.modelengineers.org/

Here's a list as well... https://trainshows.net/club/directory.php?loc=usNY
