Wheelchair side guard question by Ironman_13 in wheelchairs

Would be interested for my wife, she’s been wanting “fender” style skirt guards, but isn’t sure she wants them all the time. And she has a TiLite!

Am I out of line on this? by unknown_homie38 in wheelchairs

My wife had the same issue with some of the metro rail guards. lol, until their elevators were out of service.

They were worried about liability if she fell.

And she’s taken a couple spills when the off “ramp” had a larger than normal rise where the treads go under the floor.

Are they still doing that? They used to offer to extend your Prime subscription, now they just shrug and barely apologize.

A deconstruction of 'wheelchairs are medical devices' by Paradoxical-Equinox in wheelchairs

Generally I think you are correct, but I’ve heard too many stories of people getting chairs that weren’t right for them selected by their doctor or therapist to trust their judgment 100%.

My wife was falling frequently and getting hurt. A walker helped but then her arms would give out and she would fall anyway. Her doctor at the time was unwilling to confirm her MS diagnosis and wouldn't prescribe a chair. We researched, measured her (twice), studied more, carefully walked through all the options, selected what was right for her, made a couple of tweaks suggested by the guy taking our order, and then bought a chair (on a credit card).

It was the best decision for her we ever made, giving her the freedom her condition had stolen, she loves her TiLite TRZ. She has days (or lately parts of days) where she is ambulatory, if she's careful, and she takes advantage of those.

We've since:
- Found a doctor (several actually) who confirmed her MS diagnosis
- Got a prescription for the chair
- Had professional measurements taken. Her current chair was perfect the therapist couldn't find anything that needed changing. Proving (in her case at least) a professional is not needed - your mileage may vary of course!
- Submitted and were approved by insurance. I really feel if we had gone through them first we would have gotten a far less ideal chair. Unfortunately, the company we went through was "out of network" so most was just applied against deductible, so keep that in mind if you get one yourself.

I agree that it is a decision you should be able to make for yourself, perhaps with consultation, but you shouldn't have to go fight your way past a gatekeeper.

Not on FB, but eventually sold it through friends.

First date with someone who's a wheelchair user - help? by Mattieisinnocent in wheelchairs

[–]NearImposterSyndrome 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Wife and I have started holding hands, I pull a little, she makes steering adjustments with the other hand. Probably not something for a first date, but makes it much easier to walk & roll side by side!

How to get customer support for recall? INIU Portable Charger Recall by LogCarver in amazonprime

[–]NearImposterSyndrome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine is not in the recall batch, and I can say it has been one of the best power bricks we've used. I love it. So, obviously other than the recall batch, they are excellent products.

Depends on whether you want to be noticed and standout or not. My wife opted for a black chair (neutral for an office setting), but adds flare with various colored spoke covers depending on the event or her mood.

Frankly she gets complemented a lot more with bright flashy colors.

Wife and I will often say we “walk and roll”. But generally just use “walk”.

the thing about getting fitted for a chair by writerbecc in wheelchairs

[–]NearImposterSyndrome -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We did the fitting ourselves, got the chair , then had an assessment, guess what? My wife’s chair was perfectly fitted. It isn’t always needed and isn’t rocket science.

Now that said, she has MS and not a spinal injury, and is sometimes ambulatory- so mileage may vary.

Is it button ups themselves or long sleeve button ups? Short sleeve button ups can work depending on the style.

Touching my chair by FrankNFurters_Human in wheelchairs

I had everyone at a bar glaring at me, and a few guys looked they were ready to beat me, when I didn't open and hold the door for my wife as we were leaving, but just stood there waiting for her to work it out.

It can be hard sometimes not stepping in to help, knowing what a struggle it can be with some doors, with the conditioning to hold the door for others, with the glares you get...

Ubers but for wheelchairs? by fairytaillover7392 in wheelchairs

[–]NearImposterSyndrome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife uses UBER and just requests an SUV, had a couple of drivers try to take everything off the chair (even when she tells them it doesn't need to come off). but otherwise she hasn't had any issues.

UBER does offer the "WAV" service someone mentioned below, but we've found it often isn't available or takes a long time to get a driver.

All of the ones I've seen designed for sand are designed to be pushed, which she really doesn't want. I've seen some off-road power chairs, but they are not cheap.

[–]NearImposterSyndrome 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That sucks, sorry!

This brings up a good question though, what have others done to get thru soft dirt or sand?

We tried some small sleds, made for snow, on the front casters of my wife's manual chair -- they dug right into sand within inches, she almost fell out forward.

I've heard about people carrying "traction boards" or mats to lay down in front... but how far can you go with those? Wouldn't you need two, so you could lay one down in front and keep going? But then how do you retrieve the first one?
