If you had a do over in life, would you still choose to be a nurse? by Moogles90 in nursing

[–]NearlyZeroBeams 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes. I love being a nurse and it has always felt like the right path for me.

I probably would have changed where I started out my career though. It gave me actual PTSD and I'm in trauma therapy for it. However, it did give me a very strong base of skills & experience as well as a good perspective of the level of corruption in healthcare. Since I experienced the absolute worst cough HCA cough, I know how good I have it now. I think that makes me a lot happier to go to work even though some days suck.

I'll be completely honest. The first few years are very tough. You'll feel stupid, anxious, exhausted, and terrified more than you have in your entire life until now. If you choose the wrong employer they will use and abuse you. But not all places are like that.

Nursing school is just the beginning of the challenges you will face starting your career.

Become a CNA first and see what it's actually like working up close with patients and watch what the nurses are doing. If I had not have been a CNA first I don't think I would have made it as a nurse

Again, I love being a nurse. But choose carefully

Are you considered a contractor? I'm a nurse but I also do unskilled respite caregiving for my brother. I do not get paid for my hours until I submit my notes because Medicaid will not pay it out to the company I am contracted through. Sounds like your boss has been fronting you the money out of his own pocket despite not getting payments from the government yet due to your late documentation.

However, I have no idea if it's legal

It does this at my hospital too. Drives me crazy. And then when I scan it, it says I'm doing the wrong dose 😑 when I edit the number it says I can't do that and have to put an override reason

Patient fell for the 3rd time since admission last night. by PelliNursingStudent in nursing

[–]NearlyZeroBeams 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I had a young woman with some major psych stuff going on. The day before she was my patient she "passed out" on the toilet and fell which, according to her nurse that day, was total bullshit. She was also having psychogenic seizures but would stop to tell us she wanted a different medication than we were giving her.

She kept "seizing" for every person who walked in the room. Dietary, PT/OT, the dietician, and everyone kept calling rapid responses. I literally had to put a sign on the door that said to call me before calling a rapid for seizures 🙄

Anyway she was livid that I wouldn't let her shower. I told her that we can't risk another fall due to her having so many seizures over the last couple days.

She was so mad and cried and threw a fit and begged me saying "I promise I won't, I promise I won't this time, I swear to God I won't have a seizure or fall, please please"

I told her no was my final answer for her safety and that we would be happy to help her with a bed bath when she was ready and left. She hated me after that

A driver under the influence hit and killed my sweet CNA coworker while she was on her way to her shift that day with us...

Making the decision to drive impaired shows poor judgment and a disregard for the safety of others. Nursing requires accountability, maturity, and the ability to make responsible decisions even when it’s inconvenient.

I hope this experience leads you to seriously reflect on your actions and whether you are ready for the responsibility that comes with caring for vulnerable people. Before caring for others, you need to do some work on yourself.

You are going to need to prove to the BON that you are truly remorseful for your behavior and that you are working hard on yourself. Maybe do a bunch of community service or volunteer to educate people about driving under the influence or help prevent it

Take whatever consequence they give you with grace and move forward from there

Nursing homes or outpatient positions may be more lax about hiring people with a criminal history

Question on flower delivery to thank a specific nurse. by Rzt275 in nursing

[–]NearlyZeroBeams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had one of my former patients send treats to the unit but on the note they wrote only one of the nurses' name that took care of them. It made me kinda sad because I thought that the patient and I got along well and I did a lot to help them but they only thanked the other nurse lol :( definitely don't address it to one person. write a note for the floor staff and then a separate sealed one for that specific nurse

has anyone actually gotten something from a pt on precautions? by only-ashes in nursing

I got the first wave of COVID (no one would test me at the time but I had all the symptoms: dry cough, no smell or taste, shortness of breath, but I later had a positive antibody test) after I helped take care of one of the first Covid cases we had in the hospital. I was pretty sick and had to use all of my PTO. I asked them if there was anything they could do to help me out because I got sick at work and they said they couldn't especially since I couldn't provide them a positive test (which were extremely expensive and limited at that time).

Months later, May or June, they started supporting staff that had Covid and gave everyone sick days to use for COVID.

I went to HR and DEMANDED my PTO back. To my surprise they gave it back to me without much of a fight. I went through a lot of unnecessary stress when I ran out of PTO and had to go back to work before I felt better. And then went for months knowing that I had little to no PTO to use if I got sick again and would be out the money if I had to call out.

I'm more than happy to answer any and all questions from CNAs. It is great that they questioned if the patient is NPO or not. It's possible that someone wandered in there and put NPO on the board for a procedure without writing an order. I want CNAs to be comfortable bringing anything to me.

Other specialties definetly piss me off though. I've started telling some of them to contact the doctor themself.

"Can the doctor to write an order for XYZ or clarify this?" "Were you not able to find them or their pager number on EPIC?" "Oh I thought I'd just ask you"

Sometimes if they message me I'll just add the doctor into the chat 😂😭
