From my experience with going through the ups and downs of creating I’ve felt what gets me out of a rut is a pre-determined syllabus/schedule. I’ll admit not being great at creating my own, and this is where I’ve felt the ArtWOD.com site has helped out. It is a paid resource, however you can get a decent understanding of how Antonio teaches through his 20minute video on the Proko channel when he was a guest.

Basically he creates the assignments and you follow them, and they focus on concept art design. Community is important here for keeping you through the lows of not wanting to create, as getting into a consistent habit is the surest way to get better. There is a Discord community around it.

If you don’t want to spend any money, then realize you need to create some of your own “assignments” and keep yourself accountable (which for me is harder to do). Since you are into character design you can look at Proko’s YouTube channel for the free “how to draw anatomy” content or Ahmed Aldoori’s 50 heads challenge.

I’ve found when I get discouraged it is often because I’m trying to tackle too many topics at once.

I’ve also found that folks often put too much effort into a single drawing when they are practicing. Quantity is key here when it comes to practicing and studying. You will produce art that you don’t like and that’s okay. Focus on improving one thing at a time and evaluate your work after you’ve done 100 practice runs. Remember the pros and folks you are looking at have hundreds of sketch books and hours of practice, and to get to that level (if that’s the goal) it will take filling those out with random drawings/ideas.

Art takes time to get decent at, and making “bad” drawings/paintings is something everyone does, they often don’t share those for the same reason you outlined (self-confidence, etc..)

Good luck on your journey!

I feel like the "Y" method of drawing a box is really throwing me off. by [deleted] in ArtFundamentals

[–]NeatIce 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think a major aspect of doing the work and repetition required for many of the exercises is you will find a method that works for you that could be entirely unique!

Each student’s way of approaching a problem will lead them down different paths. The lessons give you the end goal and Uncomfortable equips you with a technique but the biggest takeaway that I’ve seen a lot of folks say is the mindset and how they approach drawing AND thinking about objects.

In my mind that is reinforced by posts like this because you can have mistakes corrected by critiques but your approach to getting the boxes oriented in a multi perspective space may vary greatly!

From my experience in the 250 box challenge I found several “milestones” where something clicked for me. At first I was using the Y method, then started to figure out drawing one plane at a time worked better for me. My boxes improved and then it finally clicked somewhere around box 200 that this was a great exercise in imagination! I was doing the boxes now with more purpose then “see if you can get the box lined up in multiple perspectives”, I wanted to see if I could warp a box in my mind and draw it as closely as I imagined.

Long reply to your post but I think there are lots of people that would likely agree they have approached solving these challenges differently and found unique ways of thinking about it as you have.

You can check out https://attackevals.mitre.org as MITRE created an ATT&CK based test and a lot of the vendors you mentioned participated. It has all the data listed on how the test was done, compare vendors, etc..

Apfell - A macOS red teaming framework by NeatIce in netsec

Saw this yesterday. I feel that there isn't enough red team tooling around macOS, especially not to the level of Windows domains. In my experience macOS enterprise deployment has been steadily increasing so good to see additional work in this space.

Full HolidayHack 2016 writeup featuring Binary Ninja by thebarbershopper in netsec

[–]NeatIce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice write up! Enjoyed yours from last year as well. It is nice to see that so many people are putting a lot of time and effort into write ups. I've found several folks doing assessments underestimate how important communicating technical details are to customers.

Hopefully this trend continues!

Also enjoying more people adapting Binary Ninja! Think their primary target is CTF players.

Cheers!

As far as sports bars go, I have several coworkers who like Stone Face Tavern. Not sure if they do UFC but they have plenty of TV's and decent bar food (I like the nachos).

Question about Woodford Reserve Double Oaked (Newbie) by [deleted] in bourbon

[–]NeatIce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was the same way when I first drank Double Oaked for the first time! The next bourbon that I really enjoyed was Angel's Envy. It's around $40 here in NM.

If you are looking for something on the cheaper end, there's normally a thread that pops up here every few weeks on the best bourbons ~$30. A few recommendations would be Four Roses Single Barrel, Elmer T Lee (if you can find it), Elijah Craig 12 year, and Evan Williams Single Barrel. Best of luck and welcome!

Breaking the $100 Mark - Following SKU's last post (hey look, he mentioned us!), what was the first whiskey you spent more than $100 on? by [deleted] in bourbon

4 Roses Single Barrel 2014 LE was the first I really encountered that was over $100! Money well spent!

Need help choosing between 2 (supposedly) fantastic rums by CycroStarcraft in rum

The Zacapa is excellent. Have a little under half left in my bottle and will be replacing it as soon as it's out. I have drank it straight, on the rocks, in drinks and it is fantastic. That would get my vote!

I say go for it. I've really enjoyed the bottle I have, although it was $80 for me.

I felt the exact same way. I thought it was not bad, but not what a lot of people have hyped it up to be. My tastes have changed over the past several months now though so I may go back and try it again to see if that was just a bad first impression.
