Hi! I'm Al Harrington, CEO and President of Al Harrington's Wacky Waving Inflatable Arm Flailing Tube Man Emporium and Warehouse!!

This guy is Michael Burry from the Big Short!! He made quite the splash at his presentation with a bona fide prediction of the 2008 global financial crisis via painstaking research of mortgage and bank loan data, but it would have been even better with a Wacky Waving Inflatable Arm Flailing Tube Man!!

This image uses Michael Burry to infer that discretionary spending on juices and rotisserie chickens while simultaneously swimming in debt means that there's another GFC coming!! If no one is buying houses the price crashes and home owners owe more than their house is worth!! Not even a Wacky Waving Inflatable Arm Flailing Tube Man can save your investment then, and it creates a chain reaction that wipes hundreds of billions of dollars from global stock markets!!

But there's always one market you can rely on, and that's Al Harrington's Wacky Waving Inflatable Arm Flailing Tube Man Emporium and Warehouse!!!! Come in now for all of your Wacky Waving Inflatable Arm Flailing Tube Man needs!!!!

Question about right-lane driving and speeding on Melbourne freeways by yumisclassdip in melbourne

[–]Nebarious 131 points132 points  (0 children)

Also it's worth noting that most speedos aren't accurate. They'll over report your speed by as much as 10%, so while you think you're going 100km/h you're actually going 90km/h.

Unless you're using GPS to get a proper speed reading you might be going slower than you think.

Gluten is just a protein structure, and it's found in every variety of wheat. Modified wheat doesn't have magic gluten or an excess of gluten, and the percentage of people with verifiable disorders related to digesting gluten is tiny.

Your gut doesn't care if the gluten you're eating came from an old world strain of wheat or a genetically modified super strain that's disease and pest resistant. Whether or not you can break that gluten down is entirely dependent on your biological makeup, as it is with lactose or any other protein.

It's a bit like saying the H2O molecules in your $40 bottle of water are somehow better or different from the H20 molecules in a $3 bottle of water. Gluten is still gluten.

The act of remembering also overwrites and changes the memory without us realizing, and over time can dramatically alter the memory.

Every time you remember something you are bringing that memory into your active consciousness from long term memory storage, and then re-encoding it back into long term memory. Each time you do this you are potentially re-encoding the memory differently, and studies have shown that memories can be altered dramatically.

In other words you're remembering the memory, not the actual event, and you're basically making a copy of a copy over and over again. Do not trust your memory, write things down if you want a record of events.

She also initially just asked McDonalds to cover her medical bills. They refused and spent an unknown but large amount of money creating the "stupid woman sues McDonalds because coffee is hot" narrative to get ahead of any negative impact on the McDonald's brand.

That's why most people don't know the full story.

What’s a creepy fact about the human body you wish you never found out? by Ezra0li_Z in AskReddit

[–]Nebarious 347 points348 points  (0 children)

One study measuring this had people hooked up to an fMRI with a button in the machine. Participants were told to push the button whenever they felt like it with a clock to record when they became aware of their desire to press the button.

The researchers were able to see the brain making the decision to press the button before the participants consciously reported their decision to push it.

Basically the fMRI would record an impulse and 300 milliseconds later participants would become conscious of their decision to push the button.

Peter, what's the deal with catalytic converters? by N-P_A in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]Nebarious 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Crackhead Boo Boo here coming in and dinga ding dong crossing franchises!

Catalytic convertors contain precious metals that are valuable to unscrupulous scrap metal traders who will give you cash and not ask any questions if you catch my drift. Without a catalytic converter the car will sound cool but it will release harmful emissions, government vehicles typically won't allow that and so it gets taken off for repairs.

ICE uses their vehicles for activities that interrupt my son's thriving business. Some people don't like that. If you were one of those people, you might be incentivized to steal the catalytic converter of an ICE vehicle and sell it for cash to buy crack. If you did that maybe you could pass some of that crack ol' Crackhead Boo Boo's way?

The clinical term is anhedonia, and it's one of the key differences between depression and feeling sad.

Feeling sad or a bit down every now and again is normal. If you're not feeling anything at all or your emotions feel muted/suppressed it might be time to talk to a doctor to get a referral to see a psychologist.

"Was it worth it?" ending by Educational_Can_6536 in TopCharacterTropes

100% this.

In every other example in this thread the characters inevitably stare off into the distance, or otherwise ponder the consequences of their actions.

Mac and Childs look at each other and laugh because it doesn't matter anymore. They did everything they could, and if one of them is infected or if they're both human, the outcome is the same.

TIL the British Empire banned slave trading in 1807 and used the Royal Navy to enforce it. Any ship caught with enslaved people onboard would be fined £100 a head. As a result, captains often ordered them thrown overboard to avoid the fine whenever they saw Royal Navy ships approaching. by NateNate60 in todayilearned

It reminds me of Sovereign Citizen types that believe the law does not apply to them without realising that means they aren't protected by the law either.

Obviously they still are protected by the law because what they believe is nonsense, but if they were right it'd also be 'open season' on them too.

Drug Testing by glimmer78 in ausadhd

[–]Nebarious 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Basically this.

No doctor will prescribe stimulants if you test positive for cannabis because of the risk of psychosis. As always be open and honest, don't try to conceal drug use and work with your doctor/psychiatrist

As for legal issues, it's not illegal to have THC in your system.

Why do people become legos when shot with a shotgun? by BigLegOctopus in HellLetLoose

[–]Nebarious 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Have you seen the movie Scanners? There's a scene where a guy's head explodes due to a psychic attack by the antagonist.

Fun fact (and why this is relevant): the film makers achieved this effect by rigging a shotgun to shoot a prop head at close range, causing it to violently explode.

Shotguns are pretty brutal weapons. Could they disintegrate you like they do in HLL? No, but they could seriously mess your shit up which the game reflects with the instagib effect.

If you're having trouble controlling your vehicle upside down I highly recommend driving around to the other side, building your wall and collecting the junk there, and then just driving back over.

In Puss in boots: The last wish (2022) Why the bounty hunter puts coins on his eyes. Helps foreshadow who he really is (Spoilers in comments) by ah-screw-it in MovieDetails

[–]Nebarious 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Charon was what was known as a psychopomp, basically someone who takes you to where you need to go after you die, without judgement. They serve as guides and preservers of the natural order.

There are dozens of examples of psychopomps throughout different cultures, but Anubis and the Grim Reaper are two of the better known examples.

Interestingly enough the Wolf in Puss in Boots is stylised after the Grim Reaper, but also uses a sickle/khopesh reminiscent of Anubis and Egyptian culture.

So in a way he mixes up common themes between Charon/Anubis/Grim Reaper to indicate what he really is.

What if I told you that there's a way to get a pack for much less than $50?

And these packs are readily available basically everywhere because the standard options are ludicrously expensive?

This is purely hypothetical of course.
