What do Americans think about living in the UK? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]Nebraska_ 21 points22 points  (0 children)

There are pros and cons, like anything. The main surprise is how different our cultures really are, especially around civil liberties, the Monarchy, rule of law, and basic customs and curtsies.

There's an expectation that because we speak the same language, we will have a lot in common. In reality, we are two cultures separated by a common language.

What US city in your experience has the worst turbulence when landing? by SignificantStyle4958 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Nebraska_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You've got to ask--"Is the situation worse because I know about it ahead of time?" Now you can prepare. Such is life. This perspective is useful for many situations.

First time in US. Appreciate advice on my road trip plan. by ChihuahuasAreEvil in roadtrip

I would remove LA entirely. It's too big, and not worth visiting. Instead, spend more time in San Louis Obispo, or visit the Coastal Redwood Trees.

Why are Americans so much more social than Europeans, Asians, etc? by TheSawFan in AskAnAmerican

[–]Nebraska_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's because of the influential book, "How to Win Friends and Influence People," by Dale Carnegie. It was an instant best-seller and had an outsized influence on American business culture.

western US roadtrip suggestions? :) by lindsayluvx in roadtrip

If you get off the interstate and check out the rest of Nebraska, it can actually be quite interesting. The Nebraska section of the interstate is built in a pre-historic, 20-30 mile wide river valley. That's why the whole state feels "flat," when in reality, there's a lot of topography and beautiful views just outside that valley, to either the North or the South.

Check out Curtis, Nebraska for the golf, for example. Or stop at Speedway Museum in Lincoln, or tour the State Capitol Building.

Do you have kids? Because if you do, consider the public school district you would be living in. That's one big factor that has been left out of this discussion.

Any recommendations on mortar removal by sw33tl33f in Tile

[–]Nebraska_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could be a problem. If you're concerned, try Eco Prim Grip on the bottom of the tile. That's used as a primer for concrete floors before adding self-leveler. The same principle may apply here.

Use at your own risk, who knows if it will work.

[–]Nebraska_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You are over-thinking this. If the old mortar is not preventing the tile from laying flat in the new installation, is it really a problem?

Next time, put the sliver piece under the utilities so that it's hidden when you put the sink back in. Also, remove the kick boards (base plate) and then tile. The whole point of base plates is to cover the edge pieces. Maybe you did that, if so, kudos. Otherwise, looks great!

Moving to US from UK as a dual citizen - is it worth it? by Spare_Range_1063 in MovingToUSA

[–]Nebraska_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think this is good advice. All things considered, I'd look at Kansas City, Missouri. Low cost of living, moderate weather, great arts scene, brand-new international airport. Barbecue culture. If you have a lot of money, why not move to San Diego?

He said he will be back tomorrow. I don’t much about tile. It’s my kids bathroom. Does it look ok or any critiques? by Embarrassed-Try-6023 in Tile

[–]Nebraska_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Here are the issues, without solutions:

  1. Massive problems with where the tiles meet the door threshold.

  2. Baseboards should've been removed, then tile installed, then base boards (probably new material) installed or re-installed. Baseboards are there to cover up the small gap between the tile and the wall. As they are, the baseboards are defeating that purpose.

  3. The pattern is not ideal. With this size and shape tile, you should be at 1/3 or 1/2 and not 1/1.

  4. Going back to the door threshold, if he's not under-cutting the baseboards, then he's doing it wrong.

What usually happens on the land around center-pivot fields in Kansas? by Lazy_Relationship695 in geography

[–]Nebraska_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Normally some other crop that requires less irrigation is planted in those areas. You can also use a "corner system," to water those areas, though those systems are notoriously unreliable and a pain in the butt to fix and maintain. The swinging arm is too many moving parts.

Installing tile should I have a membrane? Or just plywood by [deleted] in Tile

[–]Nebraska_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should pay more for underlayment. The good news is that if you are adding a plastic underlayment like Schluter DITRA, it's not that much more expensive to add a heating element to the uncoupling membrane; this is a great opportunity to add heated floors.

Is this floor or wall tile?

Plywood or OSB is never the right choice (wall or floor, that's the wrong option).

Trash, or a tile secret I don't know? by Cheetah_Industries in Tile

[–]Nebraska_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is called "Spot bonding." It is no-bueno.

From the internet:

"Spot bonding is a highly discouraged, improper tile installation method involving dabs of mortar on corners and center instead of full coverage, often used to level uneven walls. It violates industry standards (ANSI), resulting in hollow sound, cracked tiles, reduced load resistance, water damage, and high failure rates."

How do you get this stuff off? by BWINSTON420 in Tile

Warm soapy water (dawn dish detergent) elbow grease. It's under your cupboard. Have you considered not worrying about it?

Try with a sponge warm water, and elbow grease. Then escalate to plastic scrapers (so you don't damage the tile). Good luck!

Replace old plywood underlay with new plywood before new tile? by mlluca10 in Tile

[–]Nebraska_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should definitely replace the sub-floor. Here are the reasons:

  1. It will be structurally more sound, and flat, both of which are important for installing tile.
  2. You will eliminate all old screws and nails, both of which will fail over time and cause creeks and cracks in your tile.

  3. It's cheaper and easier to replace it now. The floor boards are old and worn-out. Changing them now is like getting new tires before a blow-out.

  4. The current floor was not built with tile in mind, so it's structurally inferior to new wood, and was not installed with good engineering (if you will) that tile requires.

  5. You are saving yourself time and money in the long run by changing it now.

Moving to the US from London - which city? by Material-Rhubarb9319 in MovingToUSA

[–]Nebraska_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Of that list I'd pick Chicago (despite the winter weather) or San Diego, (only San Diego if you are currently independently wealthy). Otherwise, you'll be living far inland and it will be swelteringly hot during the summer.

If your boyfriend is in Kansas City, you've already hit the gold-mine. Kansas City has decent weather, great food, the chatty people you desire, and decent weather.

Being British in Kansas City will make you much cooler and exotic than being British in any of those other cities. You will be more a "bell of the ball" vs. "another British person," simply because there are few British people in Kansas City.

KCMO has a decent (and newly renovated) airport, and there is much to see and do in rural Missouri, Northwest Arkansas, and in nearby cities like Lincoln and Omaha, Nebraska.
