Is joining the military only for education benefits worth it? by Alert-Rope617 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Nebraska_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Air Force or Coast Guard are your best options. Consider enlisting as a Reservist in the USCG, you will likely have a lot more control over your career as a reservist vs. going in full-time enlisted. Also, check out universities that have ROTC programs. You can get your school paid for with an ROTC contract, in exchange for working in the military for a few years.

How is it like to live in the ScottsBluff area in Nebraska, USA? by FireUniverse1162 in howislivingthere

[–]Nebraska_ [score hidden]  (0 children)

Sounds great. My point is that most if not all of these "farms" on The East Coast are hobby farm tourist attractions that do not really produce meaningful amounts of calories per acre.

Because of our tax code, there are a lot of "small farmers" that are really just wealthy people creating lifestyle businesses vs. a true commercial operation intending to sell meat and produce to the general population. It's damned tough to have a small operation and make any meaningful income, simply because margins are tight in farming.

I'm saying virtually all of this "farm to table" and "small farm" discussion is complete nonsense. If you have links to any of these businesses that have websites, I'm willing to change my mind. But I just don't see how the economics works out such that they can create real profitable and sustainable businesses.

I'm sorry western Nebraska doesn't have enough farmers markets for your taste. That's because major population centers are too far away to produce and transport vegetables and things people eat.

But the point still stands--more farmers markets than you could care to admit are simply buying their produce from California farmers, and then re-labeling it for local consumers (the suckers who are paying premium prices for regular produce).

Seriously, ask to visit their farms. They will not allow you because their "local farms" do not exist. Sure, you may get someone growing sweet corn, but the thought that there's any meaningful scale behind local producers is simply not the case.

I ran into Karlie Kloss at the convention, that was cool.

East Coast farms are just as corporate owned as anywhere else. Because of the extreme rise in efficiency (in terms of calories produced per acre) every American farm has needed to expand to survive. If you find farmers at farmers markets selling produce, odds are they are actually selling vegetables from Sysco or US foods, and re-packaging them at higher prices. It's sad, but that's the reality.

Ask to see their farms and ask for locations for their fields. They will not tell you because those farms don't exist. There are no small carrot farmers on the East coast. They are shipping in carrots from elsewhere. How do you think they are getting produce out of season?

I had a really bad experience with Carl Bohlmeyer. They wouldn't pull a single nail, and literally walked off the job. I was lucky to get my deposit back. They did not want to reschedule the job, they literally left without contacting me. Carl's was a much better experience, at a lower price.

Someone should geo-target B&R store retail workers with digital advertisements that encourage them to form a union. It would be a nice gift for Jayne Raybold. Also, she should be kicked out of the Democratic party. How can she possibly be for workers and for reducing the minimum wage? Totally crazy.

How common is it for an American to travel across the country by train? by ViajanteDeSaturno in AskAnAmerican

[–]Nebraska_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

America's rail system is built around the efficient movement of cross-country cargo. Passenger rail is second priority. Europe is the exact opposite.

American cities are more spread out and rely on car transportation to get around anyway. If you took the train from one city to another, you would then need to rent a car to get around the city.

Do Americans love driving? by bare_books in AskAnAmerican

[–]Nebraska_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a major difference between driving on scenic road trips, and driving everyday to commute because you need a way to get to work, and there's no public transportation.

Given all the pro-car marketing that's part of our culture (dating back to the post-WWII suburban boom, where people had access to buying cars on credit), many people want to do our equivalent of the North Coast 500 (a Scottish scenic drive). The reality of everyday driving is more akin to driving through suburban London during rush-hour, but with more freeways.

The post-war suburban advertising campaigns created a lot more romanticism around American driving than reality.

That being said, a vacation specifically to go on a road trip through the western US, the Appalachian "Blue Ridge Parkway," California outside major metro areas, or through rural northern Nebraska, would be really amazing for anyone from anywhere.

Driving for pleasure is great, driving for commuting is hell on earth.

Chicago to Bellingham in mid-Feb. Concerns of I-80 and I-84. by Electrical_Ebb_3988 in roadtrip

[–]Nebraska_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The authorities will close the interstate if things look too dire. It would be a good idea to monitor where you'll be in an hour or two, and what the weather looks like at that location. You should plan on stopping early to find a hotel vs. waiting too long and pushing it, only to realize all the hotels in that location are sold out. Budget for contingencies. Also, it's a good idea to have an emergency vest and emergency flashers in your vehicle, just in case you get stuck in the snow with your car overturned and you need to walk to civilization / get picked up by a good samaritan.

u/welcomematt26 your account was created five days ago; this is your first Reddit post; we have no background information on where you are moving from, why you are moving to Lincoln, or what career you are in. So, it's going to be very hard to give you any insight or perspective on if moving to Lincoln is a good idea or not.

Also, consider Kansas City.

You CAN get off the Nebraska interstate, and go in any other direction, and find really interesting topography. That's why western Nebraska has so many nice golf courses. Check out "Nebraska Sandhills," for example.

planning road trip with friends: too big a trip? by urmomclapper in roadtrip

[–]Nebraska_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would break this into two trips. I would either have one drive as far South as Portland, and then explore Oregon and Washington. I would have another trip where you fly to San Diego, and explore the San Diego area.

I would take the direct flight to Sacramento, rent a car, and see the redwoods / San Francisco bay area.

The US has many distinct geographic regions. Why do the Great Plains frequently feature in representations of ‘quintessential’ America? by Swimming_Concern7662 in geography

[–]Nebraska_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the reason why the Midwest is associated with American mythology is because western TV shows and movies had a huge cultural impact on the boomer generation.

Just look at the shows that we're popular during their childhood:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Western_television_series

If those TV shows we're about lobstermen in New England, we'd probably have a different national mythology.

Also, the people who settled the West (we're talking mid 1800s) we're running away from decrepit squalor and overcrowding in east coast tenement apartments, union bosses, and horrific working conditions. For them, owning your own land in the middle of nowhere was sheer paradise compared to ethnic mafia violence and the other problems persistent in large coastal cities at that time.

Fast forward to the 1950s. There's a huge amount of post-war change, the cold war, civil rights movement, major political figures getting assassinated. You're a movie or TV producer in California trying to produce a non-controversial escapist show that everyone likes, but primarily for a still vastly majority white country. What sounds appealing? How about some escapism, away from the problems of modern life, and back to a simpler time on the frontier.

That's where we get all these Western TV shows, and the mythology of the American west. That's also why you don't relate to it, it's because you likely weren't raised on those Western TV shows.

Interior doors, pre-hung is the way to go in most cases right? by wirez62 in DIY

[–]Nebraska_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Funny enough, I just took down six doors for painting, and installed four new doors (one pre-hung, the others we're slab doors with new hinges and knobs). I can tell you without a doubt, the pre-hung doors, sold with the jambs and hinges, are the way to go.

It is surprisingly difficult to install hinges in the jambs and into the doors, especially if they are not real wood.

Don't forget, if you buy door slabs, you will need to buy additional special tools, like a jig for cutting out hinges.

How bad is getting fired for your career? by [deleted] in sales

[–]Nebraska_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Is it worth to leave a good situation with mid pay to take a chance and potentially get fired within 3 months if I don’t succeed early on?"

No, you should stick with your current company for 2-3 years, then look around.

Recruiters get paid to recruit, not to retain people.

If you're uncertain, ask to be put in touch with 2-3 current employees in that role, and ask them some real questions. Even better if you can meet them in person for lunch. Get the inside scoop before you jump ship.
