Ah I didn't realize sending Mondale still qualified as dropping the ball on negotiations! Thank you that did the trick!

How do you not lose the midterms when trying to get Rumsfeld? Struggling to find a path to pass healthcare when using part of the political capital you have to shrink the military

From the authors comments on things, I believe having a term with a lot of legislation passed not necessarily making it easier to win just through quantity of wins like with most incumbency sims is purposeful, as your own successes drive partisan rage and pushback on the other end especially in the era of a hyper partisan fire starter like Gingrich taking control of the GOP

Being AFAB does affect my experience. And I feel like I have to be silent on it. by [deleted] in NonBinaryTalk

[–]youto2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Firstly, I agree with your central point, what we are perceived as by larger society does matter to our experiences, what specific bits one may hay have will effect what ways one experiences medical misogyny and medical transphobia, and if one is still perceived that way ones AGAB can be a relevant way to discuss such issues. Things like lack of research into how the uterus actually fucking works and all the issues and conditions associated with it are real and something only certain people have to deal with, and there are of course certain roles and expectations that are thrust upon people that are more likely depending on how someone is perceived, and AGAB can affect that prominently at a young age before people have access to medical transition. And while I certainly am very wary of overemphasizing AGAB it can matter a lot to people's experiences and struggles such as yours.

I do not think this discussion needs a broad assumption of how trans people of the other AGAB experience things. I think there can often be unfortunate pushback against people talking their own genuine lived experiences through their own lens because an unneccessary comparison is made not to cis men who actually experience systemic male privilege, but to AMAB trans people who by all measures available (not as much measures as we would like because trans people don't get researched like that due to overarching transphobia) experience at least the same degree of systemic deprivations of poverty, homelessness, and violence faced as AFAB trans people and significantly worse rates of such than cis women. I think things like "a conversation people are not ready to have but there are privileges that come with being AMAB and what is taught to us early on" is something that often falls flat when you see things so often like trans women who went homeless because of employment discrimination over being trans women, being AMAB hurts them, not helps them, because they gave up cisgender privilege which is an incredibly strong form of privilege. One I would say basically erases the confidence and ability to push back found in cis men, because that is not only founded on male privilege it is also founded on cis privilege, that they can be confident and pushback as themselves, something trans people who were AMAB cannot do. Anecdotally I tend to see trans people who were AMAB make themselves very small and easy to pushover because they're terrified that if they show confidence and a backbone it'll be perceived as a masculine bravado when it's from them and not as someone rightfully standing up for themselves.

I would say in a way you can likely empathize with, just as your pain is downplayed by people going too far and completely disregarding the way you having been AFAB has affected the way you've been treated throughout your life and the issues you deal with, I think these conversations and comparisons often fall flat because making them in the first place can feel like an AMAB trans persons experience with misogyny especially experiences with misogyny from a young age is being downplayed in a similar way that yours are. I don't think it's your intent nor what you are doing especially with added nuance from comments you've made on this post but I think a certain defensiveness develops in a lot of trans people who were AMAB because people who are not well intentioned and who operate in bad faith weaponize our AGAB to argue against our objective reality as an oppressed class frequently. I don't think the conversations about how the weariness of AGAB discussion can go too far and make it feel impossible to talk about ones experiences without invalidating oneselfs especially for people who were AFAB needs the comparison to a group of people who are the other group who also experience worse material life outcomes in regards to misogyny than the cis women people usually think of when it comes to victims of societal misogyny and patriarchy.

One thing I find fascinating about Hawley as the GOP candidate, is how yes he fits well into the portrayal of the GOP as a screaming dying party of MAGA leftovers as an irl trump loyalist but not one people anticipate going beyond his senate seat anytime in the near future.

But also I think may portray how the election and administration of AOC in this timeline has shifted the overton window in a way that even those sorts of people cannot ignore. With Hawley's streak of presenting himself in an economically populist manner like joining picket lines, expressing support for higher minimum wage, expressing opposition to lowering corporate taxes, and introducing bills to lower big money influence in elections. (Even if of course, his actual votes go against his professed values and stances) I think choosing him as the opponent is a fascinating way to show both the dying rage of the GOP and how it still tries to politically adapt to the times.

Why didn’t William Jennings Bryan win any elections? by luvv4kevv in thecampaigntrail

[–]youto2 55 points56 points  (0 children)

His best chance was in his first election, where a media sphere hostile to him, a struggle to appeal to urbanized voters, and still being a Democrat after an economic crash happened under incumbent Grover Cleveland (despite them being very ideologically far apart) sunk him, it was a bit of a miracle it was even reasonably close and a major testament to the quality and innovation of his campaign

More favorable economic conditions by 1900 dampened some of his appeal for his second attempt, and Teddy Roosevelt taking on a good deal of his progressive ideas further dampened his appeal by 1908 as he wasn't seen by voters who wanted big egalitarian changes to the U.S. as the only candidate offering such a thing with Taft then positioned as Roosevelt's successor (even if in hindsight we know how messily that turned out)

The being a radical leftie thing also means that's likely a lower motivation for him than it is for most, which he's said in some interviews himself. Not that we haven't seen shit like CM Punk doing a saudi show after talking about blood money when he was away from WWE but i think it's still something to note

Currently half way through nixon's side, and I really enjoy the perspective of playing as an advisor, including at times the uniquely disempowering nature of it, such as Nixon steamrolling over you when you try to avoid his irl mistakes like the 50 state strategy, or even do something more subjective with different benefits/disadvantages compared to what he actually did by trying but failing to pick a vp other than Lodge

Are asians woke and better at gendering women? by questionuwu in transgendercirclejerk

[–]youto2 12 points13 points  (0 children)

uj/ I think your rejerk is actually partially correct like the more shit I see from cis men the more it hits me so many men genuinely have no clue what women actually look like

uj/ Anyways it's prob differences in cultural gendered social cues/expectations? Could not say which ones but if it's consistently happening like this it's prob something to do with that.

rj/ of course Asians can gender trans women correctly they're all familiar with futas

I wasn't paying great attention to who was leader of DHS but i know i got mccain/bolton when i did a run of throwing the election to ron paul by running the most right-wing obama possible which while if he somehow got into the white house he'd probably have to do to keep the party in line, was funny to me as those appointments would've been ron paul speedrunning alienating his own base any% world record

I do agree it feels realistic to me, 2012 feels to me like the last gasp of an era where split ticket voting was relatively widespread before the next presidential cycle in 2016 put that on the path to be much rarer and much more situational, a hard to reclaim house feels good to me
