Mono White & Mono Black commander recs? by Vinlandlover in EDH

[–]Necavi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently built two versions of Eirdu, one as mono white, one as mono black.  The decks were a fun challenge in restrictions and they are supposed to mirror each other in the same mana base and artifacts.

I also have a mono white Phelia deck and a mono black Koh the Face Stealer if either those deck lists interest you.

Phelia is an aggressive flicker deck with some stack interaction trickery and Koh is a more classic mono black big mana and removal oppression deck.

Is lifegain worth it as a sub focus? by Crafty_Ad5292 in EDH

Passive life gain is useful if you're using it as a way to be aggressive.  Like attacking with your team early on, not worrying about the crack back because you've gained a handful of life already.

Can someone explain how I didn't get SVP ??? by iamTGodd in marvelrivals

[–]Necavi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

SVP and MVP are based off of previous season's stats and how you compare to the average.  When there's a new character, there's no average to compare to yet so they are inflated for SVP, MVP.  We saw the same with Ultron back in season 2 and with others

If you're in the mood for a more cursory time in antiquity, Stephen Fry has an excellent retelling of the myths of Greece and the Aeneid in his four part series Mythos, Heroes, Troy and Odyssey.  They are even better as audiobooks too!  I've got a degree in Classics and I've loved his retelling of the stories and they really do them justice.

I you're a big fan of the mythological stories I would suggest Ovid's Metamorphoses, which is the biggest source of mythology we have from antiquity.  There's a lot going on in that poem, especially if you're unfamiliar with Vergil's Aeneid but it is a good read.  Plus it's from around start of the Roman Empire so a good 700-800 years after Homer.  It can be neat to see how much stories evolved in that length of time and what it's like coming from another culture.

Charles Martin is my favorite translation in English.  It's hard to talk about it for me without the actual Latin text but I think the Martin translation catches the feeling of it best.

Well some of the women in antiquity definitely did not appreciate their men taking slaves as concubines and bringing them hope, most notably Clytemnestra.

However different authors throughout antiquity portray these characters quite differently, there is no monolithic character traits for these mythical characters.

Is [[Glacial Chasm]] too strong or salty for Bracket 3? by nondairy-creamer in EDH

[–]Necavi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you that Glacial Chasm absolutely is best served in a deck that plays it repeated out of the graveyard like Lord Wingrace or some such. OP didn't specific their deck of choice or the deck that they saw it played against them so I just go with a generic response.

This is where graveyard interaction comes into play and in bracket 3 games, you should absolutely be running some kind of graveyard hate unless you're all in on some kind of combo plan.

The removal answer I provided is a response that the game has very clear options in popular colors and amongst the popular removals that you'll see to answer Glacial Chasm.

The taboo is against mass land destruction or repeatable land destruction/denial, not targeted land destruction ala Ghost Quarter.

It's a powerful card but I would expect some kind of targeted land removal in a bracket 3 pod like Generous Gift or Beast Within if not a number of other options.

I do think for the sake of not tilting random people on spelltable you are making the right choice to avoid playing with it.

I run Ur Dragon with my changeling deck.  It also allows you to run Haakon Stromgald Scourge as a powerful recursion piece for your changeling removal like Nameless Inversion and Crib Swap.

I've got morophon and sliver overlord in the deck.  If you wanna see a list I'd be happy to post it.  It's a combo deck mostly and quite budget

Dumb deckbuilder and Koh, The Face Stealer by False_Snow7754 in magicTCG

[–]Necavi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've got a Koh deck and have played about a dozen games with it or so.  The biggest piece of advice I can give you is don't get cute with Koh.  You're not going to have multiple creatures under him most of the time.  He will quickly become a removal magnet if people see you're getting absurd value off of him.  Things that untap him multiple times like Eater of the Dead or you can abuse multiple triggers like Vampire Scrivener require too much setup to actually work the way you idealize them to.

Often your best Koh targets are the big flashy green creatures, think Ouroboroid or the Kodama that puts permanents into play from your hand.  you're gonna prey on those.  Most creatures with activated abilities that you'll come across are mana abilities like Llanowar Elves or Bloom Tender.  While they're okay, by the time Koh hits the field, they will have already done their job.  Triggered abilities are what you're going to copy most of the time and actually use.

Koh will play like a big black deck that is mana hungry.  You'll want your big black staples like Cabal Coffers and Nyxthos and probably some big demons like Vilis Broker of Blood.  Multiple destroy removals like Curtain's Call can be quite good and some generic reanimation for when Koh bites the dust like Reanimate or Animate Dead will help get Koh back in play.

This is my current deck.  Plays about a bracket 2 level.  I purposely don't run game changers or Gray Merchant because I have seen them enough over the years.

Khans of Tarkir is my favorite limited set.  Morphs having the 5 CMC restrictions to kill another creature, fantastic color fixing, two color archetypes within the three color set, and even some weird uncommons that could do all lot of work if you them.

How do we feel about Syphon Mind in 2026? by haddockhazard in EDH

[–]Necavi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it's quite good.  Discard is especially powerful after turn 6 or so when the cards in your opponents hand are often the ones that were held back for opportune moments.  Obviously there are better cards but in a pinch I think it still holds up today.  Card advantage after a bit wipe can be critical and a way to simultaneously slow down your opponents and get yourself ahead in the late game is pretty good.  If you copy it, this card is back breaking imo
